Exploring Bonnechere Caves in Eganville, Ontario
We were guests of Chris Hinsberger at Bonnechere Caves in Eganville Ontario. We had an incredible time exploring the 500,000,000-year-old fossils and the incredible rooms of this very cool cave in Ontario.
Our guide regaled us with stories about how the cave was discovered in 1955 and the misadventures of its founder, Tom Woodward.

We went 60 feet below the surface, where the temperature stays around 10 to 12 degrees celcius. One narrow path leads to several open chambers in this series of caves and fossils that dates back to the Ordovician Period.
Bonnechere Caves are also real-life bat-cave. No Joke - It's home to several bats in the winter months! How cool is that?!?!
This was definitely the highlight of our time in the Ottawa Valley and Ontario's Highlands!

Exploring Bonnechere Caves near Eganville Ontario
This is a tourist cave with guided tours. Not what we would usually do, but we have wanted to check these out for some time. This was mostly worth the $17 to get in. From what we could see, there is plenty more cave to be explored that is not open to the public. Be sure to check out the side passage that the guide does not go down.

Ever seen a 500 million year old Caves? Bonnechere caves | Canada
A natural underground wonder that has fascinated visitors the world-over for over 55 years, the Bonnechere Caves are located 40 minutes from the Deakins B & B near the town of Eganville. The caves feature fossilized remains of prehistoric invertebrates preserved in the massive limestone formations that run underground along the Bonnechere River. Enthusiastic guides tour amateur and professional geologists through the marvels of the stalactite-studded beauty of the Caves.
About 130km west of Ottawa en route to Algonquin Provincial Park, these caves are some of the world's finest examples of solutional caves (dissolved out of solid rock by acidic waters). Formed 500 million years ago from the floor of a tropical sea, the dank passages feature a haunting collection of fossils, including a prehistoric octopus.

Bonnechere Caves
September 28, 2009. Roger, Bryan and I made a day trip to the Bonnechere Caves in Eganville to shoot some photo. We arrived early, and spent some time shooting the rapids of the Bonnechere River, before taking the tour of the caves. A couple of Rubenesque American women joined us, but kept to themselves.
Our tour guide was Josh, who turned out to be well spoken and knowledgeable. Due to the small size of our group, he let us wander off and take photos and shoot video at will. We encountered hibernating bats in the caves, which was an unexpected surprise. At the end of the tour, instead of exiting at the back door, we walked up through the caves again, revisiting the bats, and squeezing through a side tunnel that Roger had gone through earlier.
Afterward we visited the sinkhole, which was the original exploration point of the caves. It was raining lightly at this point, and we took advantage of overhanging rocks to shield our camera equipment. Fossils are everywhere, most of them from the Ordovician Period, which means cephalopods (squids), crinoids (starfish-like critters), brachiopods (clams) and gastropods (snails). Before returning to the car, we returned to the rapids for a few final photos.
We stopped by the ghost town of Balaclava on the way home, to see the abandoned wood mill and houses there. The rain was quite intense by this point, keeping us from doing any casual trespassing, and getting some decent photos of the crumbling structures.
