Herman the Sturgeon and the Salmon Fish Ladders - Cascade Locks, Oregon
The Bonneville Fish Hatchery and Bonneville Lock and Dam are both hidden gems 40 miles east of Portland, Oregon. We were impressed with the facilities at both locations, which are off the same exit from I-85. The Bonneville Hatchery housed Herman the Sturgeon fish, an impressively large and famous Oregon fish, trout that we could feed, and salmon splashing in the river in their attempt to swim upstream. A short drive past the dam locks and up to the power plant led us to a wonderful visitors center with an underground view of the salmon in the fish ladders. The kids earned their ranger badges and we all learned a lot about salmon!

Creswell to Cascade Locks, 9/25/2015
This was the first time I'd taken the 172 into a smaller strip. Cascade Locks is 1800' long by 30' wide. I got a bit shy of the water on short final so touched down a little further down the runway than I'd like. Ah well.
Large sturgeons at Bonneville Dam fish hatchery
I took my four year old grandson to the fish hatchery at Bonneville Dam on the Columbia River today; he was not quite sure about this big guy and backed away from the window when the fish got too close. Sturgeons are the largest fresh water fish in North America. The different species of sturgeons in this part of the world can weigh up to 1000 pounds and reach a length of 20 feet. They can live 60-70 years or more. While they are not particularly pretty or attractive, they are fascinating and beautiful in their own way. :-)
A story on Oregon Live dated May 16, 2008, tells of tens of thousands of sturgeons bunched up in a big ball below the Bonneville Dam - some of them were up to 14 feet long; scientists had never before seen such a ball of sturgeons before. Look it up by searching for the article named: Big ball of Columbia River sturgeon baffles experts.

Columbia River Fish Hatchery (1989)
While touring in Oregon in 1989, I had the opportunity to visit the hatchery on the river. They had big and healthy fish in holding ponds, you had the chance to give them food and the sturgeon in the ponds were a sight to see.
Super brief overview of Oregon fish hatcheries
I had a couple questions about what fish hatcheries do and so I gave a brief, very brief, example of a few keystone species we are trying to recuAlso a few boring bits about what I'm testing atm.
