Bonneville Salt Flats - Photo Shoot - UT USA
Preparation of a photo shoot with Green Ardelle and Marlene Barriere in this incredible place that are the Bonneville Salt Flats, not far away from Salt Lake City, Utah, United States.
The Bonneville Salt Flats is one of the most unique natural features in Utah, stretching over 30,000 acres. It is located along I-80 near the Utah-Nevada border.
The Salt Flats were formed when ancient lake Lake Bonneville dried up. The lake was huge, filling much of the Great Basin. It eventually shrank below its outlet and so its water became salty. As water continued to evaporate, salt deposits were left in many areas. The Great Salt Lake is a remnant of Lake Bonneville.

In this video, my friends and I camp out on the Bonneville Salt Flats. The Salt Flats are around 110 miles west of Salt Lake City. Here are some fun Wikipedia facts about the Bonneville Salt Flats: The area is a remnant of the ancient Lake Bonneville and is the largest of many salt flats located west of the Great Salt Lake. The property is public land and is known for land speed records at the Bonneville Speedway.
This was my first time visiting this destination. It is out in the middle of nowhere and isn’t near any other destinations. Some people drive out to Wendover, Nevada to gamble which is right next to it. Those people aren’t in my generation though, if you know what I mean…
I finally had the opportunity to visit the Salt Flats when I was invited to attend a fire/music social out there on a weekend. This was a social with a lot of Mormons, so it didn’t get very crazy. We all talked and roasted food around different fire pits. Someone brought a generator and giant speakers, so we could dance to music. We set off fireworks. Side note, there isn’t a safer place in the state other than over water to light off fireworks. There is no plant life for miles. Nothing can get set on fire. There is only salt. It’s white color, also reflected the glow of the fireworks. That made the display even more captivating.
A small portion of the group ended up camping that night instead of driving back to Salt Lake in the dark. The next morning is when I made my video. I was amazed by how thick the salt was. I just learned from the internet that “The salt flats are about 12 miles long and 5 miles wide. Near the center of the salt, the crust is almost 5 feet thick in places.”
I chiseled into the salt with my knife before giving up after an inch or two. Not only was the salt thick, it was also harder than a clay soil.
I was also amazed by how wet the salt on the flats was. The mineral is notorious for drying things out. That is because it absorbs water. So, just because it makes something dry, it doesn’t mean it can’t be wet. Wet salt tends to stick to everything. My truck’s underside was caked by the end of the adventure. I had to wash it all off quickly after returning home. If I didn’t the metal contacting the salt would have experienced an accelerated corrosion.
I tried to do a little drifting on the Flats, but it didn’t work out too well. My tires have too much tread on them.
We did discover large metal flats that are used to make tracks for racing. They are drug along the ground to make an extremely smooth surface. Take a close look at the flats in the video. The Salt Flats taught me that you can have fun anywhere. You just have to take advantage of the situation and setting you are in, no matter what hand you are given.

Bonneville Salt Flats, along Interstate I-80 near Wendover, Utah, January 1, 2020
Visiting the Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah, located along Interstate Highway I-80, near Wendover, Utah, and West Wendover, Nevada, just over the Nevada-Utah state lines.
During winter time, because of cold temperatures, water from rain and snow does not evaporate easily, and so the normally dry salt flats turn into a lake of sorts. Standing at the edge of the water, you can see the salt beneath the water easily, and the water is not deep, a few inches at most. However, I don't know how deep it can get the farther you go into the water. Much to my surprise, the water also did not feel cold to the touch, although this might have something to do with the brutal and much colder winds that were blowing all around me at the time.

Wendover is a resort town of about 6,700 people (2012) straddling the border that divides the American states of Utah and Nevada, 120 miles due west of Salt Lake City. The location on the state border makes Wendover the nearest legalized gambling for millions of people, which has led to the construction of large, extravagant casino resorts despite the town being otherwise very small and remote. This, in turn, has made Wendover sort of a quieter, more laid-back alternative to Las Vegas even for those who don't live in the region. Wendover is also the destination of choice for those attending land speed racing events at Bonneville Speedway, just east of town on the Bonneville Salt Flats!

This film was found with 2 other film reels of the same length (400 feet) on eBay and originated from an estate sale. The family name is unknown but there are many notes attached to the film canisters. This reel is marked number #3 and includes scenes of Utah, Nevada the Hoover Dam, Los Angeles and other areas in California. It is dated June 11, 1952

This short film, produced for Wynn Oil Company by So-Cal Productions, shows the time trial races at the Bonneville Salt Flats in 1957, where the Wynn’s Friction Proofing Streamliner car set a new American speed record, and promotes the company’s Friction Proofing line of products. The film opens with a shot from the POV of a car driving from Denver (home of the race team) toward Wendover, UT; the film then shows the bleak landscape of the Great Salt Lake and surrounding area as team continues to the Bonneville Salt Flats (00:58). Men set up the speed trials timing system for the course at the salt flats. Viewers see officials place the photoelectric units and portable generators (02:30) on the nine-mile course. A Utah State Highway truck marks the course and another truck smooths out the surface. Men register for the race and have their cars inspected. The film shows the trophies for the different race classes (03:44). Trucks move the hot rods to the pit, and crews make final adjustments to the vehicles. Cars with special nitrogen-filled tires are rolled to the starting line (04:47). The film shows the Wynn’s Friction Proofing Streamline car, the pit crew, and lead mechanic and engineer Bill Kenz. Someone pours Wynn’s Friction Proofing oil into the car’s engine. The film shows the standard preparation of the car by the pit crew, including lubricating the wheel bearings. There is a good shot of the cars lined up for the race (08:25). The first car to race is a Chrysler-powered Lister (No. 5), which races across the flats at 207 MPH. Other cars featured in the race are a Ford V-8 Roadster (09:30), the “Half-Fast” coupe (No. 20), a modified Model T (No. 404), and a Mercury-powered Roadster. Driver Roy Leslie climbs into the Streamliner and races past the speed traps (10:55). An aerial view shows the camps, pit, and racetrack at the Bonneville Salt Flats (11:26). Viewers see a super-charged DeSoto engine in a Roadster (12:02). Men pour fuel into their cars, a hybrid of methyl alcohol and nitromethane. A 1956 Victoria races down the course, followed by a 300 SL Mercedes Benz, and a modified B-class Roadster. A 1957 Plymouth coupe races (14:13). A modified Studebaker is pushed out to for its time trial (14:47). Leslie climbs into the Streamliner, and the push car begins moving the yellow race car. The Streamliner flies past the speed traps, clocking 269 MPH. The pit crew change some gears on the car after rains make the course slower than normal (16:58). There is more footage of cars racing on the course. The Streamliner moves out and races past the timers, failing to repeat 269 MPH (18:48). Leslie talks with Kenz about racing the car one more time (19:44), and the pit crew sits to plan strategy. A man stacks cans of Wynn’s Friction Proofing oil on the car, then someone pours it into the oil tank. Leslie puts on his racing suit and helmet, climbs into the driver’s seat, and runs through the cockpit check (22:09). The Streamliner begins its final time trial (22:38), and Leslie manages to set a new American record at a speed of 270.473 MPH. Leslie and the crew celebrate the new record. They pose with the car and the Bonneville trophy, concluding the film.
