Booby Pond Nature Reserve Little Cayman - Expedition Notebook
One of the most fascinating locations in the Caribbean is the Booby Pond Nature Reserve on the island of Little Cayman in the Cayman Islands. Jessica Harvey takes us there...
Little Cayman, Cayman Islands, Caribbean
Little Cayman is a tiny, eco-friendly island, just ten miles long and about a mile wide, with crystal clear azure waters lapping pristine white sandy beaches it has some of the best snorkelling and diving in the world and represents a veritable Caribbean paradise. The handful of resorts on the island do their part to ensure they preserve the pristine eco-system of the island.
An important site for nesting birds, Little Cayman has the largest known breeding colony of the Red Footed Booby in the Caribbean as well as a breeding colony of magnificent Frigate birds. The island's 203 acre Booby Pond Nature Reserve, administered by the National Trust, is the first RAMSAR (the intergovernmental treaty on wetlands) site in the Cayman Islands. Little Cayman is also home to the rare Little Cayman Rock Iguana (Cyclura nubila caymanensis) which is found nowhere else in the world save here and in Cayman Brac.
Real estate in Little Cayman is limited but still relatively abundant compared with the size and population of the island. There is a great opportunity in Little Cayman to buy land which can be a good low maintenance investment choice. Little Cayman also has condominiums and residential homes for sale which make an exceptional lifestyle choice in a place that is truly unique, a beautiful unspoilt Caribbean paradise.

A Salty Passion: Hi! We are Ryan (RumShopRyan) and Crystal (Castaway Crystal), we document, photograph, and film the best the Caribbean has to offer. Whether it’s stunning beaches, relaxing hotels, friendly restaurants, or soggy beach bars…we want to share it and inspire others to explore the islands.
MEET US!
Who Is RumShopRyan:
Howdy! I’m Ryan and I hail from the land-locked, can’t get any further from the ocean, state of Kansas. I moved to laid back southwest Florida in 2001. I didn’t know a single person and didn’t have a job. Risky I know, but the ocean was calling and I had to answer.
I’m a huge fan of Kansas City sports, so you’ll probably see a lot of Jayhawks, Chiefs and Royals attire in my photos. Kansas City is a great town and I’m glad I’m from there, but the coastal life was calling. It’s kind of like Kenny Chesney’s “island boy” song. Check out the lyrics and you’ll see what I mean.
I write because I’m passionate about the Caribbean and the island lifestyle, and it’s my way to share it with you. If it has anything to do with the Caribbean, rum drinks, beach style music, or Caribbean culture, you’ll be able to find it on this site.
When in the Caribbean you’ll find a camera around my neck and note pad in my pocket. This is how I document the experiences in unique and interesting ways and bring it back to you, the Castaways.
Who is Castaway Crystal:
I was raised in Southwest Florida so it’s no surprise that I have a love for beaches, water and nature. As a child, most weekends were spent fishing in the warm gulf waters on the family boat. As an adult, most weekends are spent soaking up the sun on Ft. Myers Beach. Even though I have always loved the coastal life, I don’t think I fully appreciated it until I moved to Nashville, TN. I’m all about experiencing new things, and as a Licensed Massage Therapist I thought it would be amazing to massage some of Nashville’s biggest stars (a girl can dream right?). But I missed the sun and sand too much—and let’s not forget the rum runners! After a year I couldn’t take it anymore, this sun bunny moved back to her coast of somewhere beautiful.
I’ve always been passionate about photography and writing but my passions never really had a purpose until I met Ryan. I couldn’t be happier being Ryan’s first mate and sharing my photos and stories with you. May they inspire you to go after your tropical dreams and wishes. Make a plan…Set a date…Just go!

Nestled in the calm, turquoise waters of the western Caribbean, lies the peaceful British Overseas Territory known as the Cayman Islands. Consisting of three islands just 480 miles south of Miami, Grand Cayman, Cayman Brac, and Little Cayman remain our little piece of paradise.
Government
The Cayman Islands highest official is the Governor, His Excellency, Mr. Duncan Taylor, CBE, who is the appointed representative of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. He presides over Cabinet, the ruling body of the country. Mr. Taylor succeeded Mr. Stuart Jack, CVO. The Governor's term is four years. The existing constitution of the Cayman Islands, introduced on August 22, 1972, provides for the government of the Cayman Islands as a British Overseas Territory. It established a governing body called the Cabinet, which consists of three officials and five elected members, the latter being selected from the 15 elected representatives of the Legislative Assembly. To see the 15 elected representatives or to get more information visit the Cayman Islands Government website.
Currency
The Cayman Islands has its own currency, first issued in 1972, whose basic unit is the dollar, issued in notes with denominations of CI$100, 50, 25, 10, 5 and 1 and coins valued at 25 cents, 10, 5 and 1 cent. The CI dollar has a fixed exchange rate with the US dollar of CI$1.00 equals US$1.25. Or, the US dollar equals CI $.80. There is no need for visitors to exchange their US dollars into local currency. The US dollar is accepted throughout the islands at a rate of CI 80 cents. However, this can be confusing to visitors: for example, a US$20 note becomes CI$16. Banks do NOT give a better rate of exchange! Major credit cards (with the exception of the Discover Card) and traveller's checks are widely accepted. Canadian dollars, Euro dollars and pounds sterling can be exchanged for CI dollars at local banks. In addition, Automatic Teller Machines accepting VISA and MasterCard with Cirrus affiliation are located at Cayman National Bank and other banks and at Owen Roberts International Airport as well as a few other locations such as the grocery stores.
Geography
The total land mass of the three islands is 100 square miles. Grand Cayman occupies 76 square miles; Cayman Brac, 14 square miles and Little Cayman, 10 square miles. Grand Cayman is approximately 22 miles long and 8 miles at its widest point, reaching a maximum elevation of 79.77 feet in North Side.
Cayman Brac is 14 miles long and 2 miles wide and has the most dramatic topography of the trio. Its majestic Bluff rises west to east along the length of the island to 151.75 above Spot Bay. Many mysterious caves are carved throughout this awe-inspiring natural attraction.
Little Cayman, only 10 miles long and a mile wide, is flat, reaching a maximum elevation of 55.75 ft. Its famous Bloody Bay wall Marine Park has been called one of the world's best dive sites. Inland, the 203 - acre Booby Pond Nature Reserve is a RAMSAR site and nesting ground for the Caribbean's largest population of Red Footed Boobies.

Discarded fishing line a threat to rare seabirds
Researchers studying seabird populations in the Sister Islands have discovered evidence of the devastating impact of discarded plastic in the ocean.
Scientists working on two separate studies have taken gruesome pictures of rare seabirds tangled in fishing line and snagged in the branches of trees around Little Cayman.
The research team, which is currently tagging and tracking frigate birds to find out more about their behaviour and range in the Caribbean, hope their work will help inform international conservation management plans to protect the species.
Abandoned plastics, particularly monofilament fishing line, have long posed a threat to sea creatures. Just last week, a juvenile green sea turtle was found dead, entangled in fishing line off Duck Pond Cay in North Sound. But the findings of the seabird study team show the extent to which the issue is also impacting life in the skies.

Cayman Islands - wildlife and heritage
Watch the three-part Britain's Treasure Islands documentary series on BBC FOUR, starting Tue 12 Apr 2016 21:00. (repeated Wed 13 Apr 2016 20:00).
This mini-documentary explores the wildlife and conservation of the Cayman Islands, a UK Overseas Territory in the Caribbean comprising Grand Cayman, Little Cayman and Cayman Brac. All three islands are home to a staggering diversity of wildlife that occurs in tropical dry forests, mangrove forests and vast seabird colonies. In this film, we encounter fiddler crabs, snakes, land hermit crabs, exquisite orchids and many unique birds that occur no where else on Earth. The Cayman Islands are also home to two unique iguanas, both of which are critically rare. Grand Cayman's blue iguana is so called for its striking blue colouration. The blue iguana was predicted to become extinct, but conservationists acted just in time by setting up a very successful breeding programme, and the species has been saved for the future. Off shore, diverse coral reefs are renowned across the world, and are the site for immense grouper spawning aggregations - including the largest remaining aggregation events left in the Caribbean.
This film is one of forty mini-documentaries made from the footage not used in the broadcast series.

DOE studies Cayman's Magnificent Frigatebirds
The Department of Environment (DOE) is on a quest to learn more about Cayman's Frigatebird also known as the Man-O-War. Recently the team at the DOE, together with students from Liverpool University and Milan University, tagged 26 Frigatebirds at the Booby pond in Little Cayman with live tracks to research where they travel. Those tracks last up to 9 months. DOE Terrestrial Research Officer Jane Haakonsson said it will be collecting key data. They are extremely good indicators of biodiversity hot spots as well as healthy oceans in general, said Ms. Haakonsson.
Several British Overseas Territories have partnered with Cayman in this effort to study and help protect the birds once they leave Little Cayman's Booby pond. This particular study, we are collaborating with Anguilla and the BVI that also have colonies of Magnificent Frigatebirds and once we understand the interaction if any between the colonies then we can start looking at the species in a more holistic perspective, said Ms. Haakonsson.
Ms. Haakonsson said the young Frigatebirds are a priority in the study. We are looking at juvenile dispersal and juvenile behavior to see if there's any connectivity between our population frigatebird or any other in the region, so it's just a matter of weeks before we have a better understanding of exactly how far the juveniles go. Ms. Haakonsson said recent research showed the adult Man-O-War traveling 919 miles from Cayman. We saw that fail breeders which is animals who don't have a nest or a chick to tend to travel much further, one individual went as far as New Orleans, said Ms. Haakonsson.
The DOE has a remaining 14 tags left, which they plan to place on Frigatebirds in July. The research and tagging process is sponsored by the Darwin Initiative in the UK. Scientists will use movement data from the Frigatebirds to support and help protected areas onshore, nearshore and offshore to support the regional conservation management.

Grand Cayman Parrots Calling
This breeding pair of Grand Cayman Parrots live at the Turtle Farm at Boatswain's Bay in Grand Cayman. I'm not quite sure what has them all excited, but they are beautiful birds and a lot of fun to observe. Cayman Parrots are struggling due in part to habitat loss and destruction, as well as poaching by black market parrot traders who will chop down the tree to steal the chicks and sell them. These parrots nest in old trees and use the same nesting site every year. Hurricanes and storms also have an impact on the population; the Cayman Brac Parrot's numbers have been dramatically reduced due to tropical storms. It is illegal to remove a Cayman Parrot from the wild and they are a protected species.
Scuba Hall of Fame Grandfather Discussed in the Caymans
This is an interview with Caymanian Environmentalist, Steff McDermott, speaking about her grandfather who is in the Scuba Diving Hall of Fame. Steff is really interesting to listen too and we find out that her Grandfather started Liveaboard Diving.
Lionfish University Field Reporter, Roger J Muller, Jr. asks Steff about her Grandfather and we learn a lot of interesting facts in this video. T?his video was filmed on the Ocean Frontiers property. They have a great dive operation on the East End of the Caymans.
Giant GREAT WHITE SHARK Catch- real or fake?
Binge on REAL OR FAKE videos! Click here for playlist -
This picture was also submitted by Mista Cheesy.
Hey Guys, Bill here… when it comes to the world of sharks, there are some really amazing photos out there. In just a few clicks you can see anything from unbelievable Giant Tiger Sharks, to giant Megamouth Sharks, and giant Great Whites Galore… Some of the pictures showing people catching sharks are pretty amazing as well, like this one.
It was sent it by Thedodge DD, TheVivid and Mackenzie Campbell just to name a few. It shows two guys bringing in one the biggest, most epic great white sharks I have ever seen.
But if this picture real? Or is just another Big Fat Ocean Going Fake… Why don’t we get out our fishing gear and see what we can find out.
Looking around on the internet, there are lots of copies of this picture, but information on who took it, where it was taken and when is not easy to come by. Lucky for me, billschannel has a new group of highly talented researchers called the “Chewey Piranhas.” And thanks to them, I have this, the official answer.
Now before I can open this, I need to get your answer first - sorta like a game to help you test your real or fake skills - get it? Now, what I need you to do and is make up your mind right now and yell it out as loud as you can - real or fake. If you can’t do that, then just pause the video right here for second, go to the comment section, leave your answer there, then come back here and play the rest of the video. Ok you ready… and go!
OK, did you do it? Good, so now without wasting one more second I’m going to get right to the answer here so we can see if you were right about what’s going on in this picture.
And here we go
The picture of the shark being hauled in by two fisherman has been examined and determined to be… a perfectly authentic rendition of what is usually referred to as a BFF… or BIG FAT FAKE…
I kinda thought so, but what I’m wondering is, what is the real story behind this megahoax.
Thanks to Chewy Piranaha researchers, Shelby Leanne, Prom Sobunsak, and Homza Andreas, we were able to track down the original photos used to make this tricky composite.
The first photo is this one. It comes from the deck of a boat in the Cayman Islands called “Pocket Change.” Boat owner David Corbin posted the picture on his blog about a fishing trip from 2002. Now if you look closely at this picture, you see the fisherman actually has half a Baracuda in his hand. This is likely bait they are using.
The second photo is this one… Despite a heroic search by Homza Andreas, we couldn’t find the original photographer, but for the purposes of the fake, we’re pretty certain it was just taken from this site which offers it as a wallpaper for your computer screen.
We don’t have the name of the person who created the fake, but even of we could, we wouldn’t be able to honor top marks for this piece. If you look closely right here, you can see the half a barracuda still in the fisherman’s hand…. Sloppy…
Ok well that is all the time I have for this video. I want to thank Thedodge DD and TheVivid for sending in that picture, and for the rest of you guys, if you have a picture or video and you aren’t sure whether it’s real or not, send it in to me at bills channel@gmail.com and I will take a look. See you next time.
