Union Steam Ship Company of New Zealand Limited —when there was no chance of confusion casually referred to as Union, Union Company, Union Steam Ship Company (USS Co), or Union Line— was once the biggest shipping line in the southern hemisphere and New Zealand's largest private-sector employer. It was incorporated by James Mills in Dunedin in 1875 with the backing of a Scottish shipbuilder, Peter Denny. Bought by shipping giant P & O around the time of the First World War it was sold in 1972 to an Australasian consortium and closed at the end of the twentieth century.

SUMMARY
=======
Prince Edward Island (PEI or P.E.I.; French: Île-du-Prince-Édouard) is a province of Canada consisting of the island of the same name, and several much smaller islands. Prince Edward Island is one of the three Maritime Provinces and is the smallest province in both land area and population. It is part of the traditional lands of the Mi'kmaq, and became a British colony in the 1700s and was federated into Canada as a province in 1873. Its capital is Charlottetown. According to the 2016 census, the province of Prince Edward Island has 142,907 residents.The backbone of the economy is farming; it produces 25% of Canada's potatoes. The island has several informal names: Garden of the Gulf, referring to the pastoral scenery and lush agricultural lands throughout the province; and Birthplace of Confederation or Cradle of Confederation, referring to the Charlottetown Conference in 1864, although PEI did not join Confederation until 1873, when it became the seventh Canadian province. Historically, PEI is one of Canada's older settlements and demographically still reflects older immigration to the country, with Celtic, English and French surnames being dominant to this day.
PEI is located about 200 kilometres (120 miles) north of Halifax, Nova Scotia, and 600 kilometres (370 miles) east of Quebec City. It consists of the main island and 231 minor islands. Altogether, the entire province has a land area of 5,686.03 km2 (2,195.39 sq mi). The main island is 5,620 km2 (2,170 sq mi) in size, slightly larger than the U.S. state of Delaware. It is the 104th-largest island in the world and Canada's 23rd-largest island.

The Sergeant Sees It Through
As of August 26, 2014, this video is now public, by kind permission of Orica Canada. As far as I can determine, Orica owns the copyright, since CIL's interest fell to Orica via Imperial Chemical Industries. I tried to contact CIL (now a paint company) about this but never received any response.
Originally this was an unlisted video, so it didn't appear in my channel, in Youtube searches, or anywhere else on Youtube. The only way to find it was via its address (URL), which I provided to a limited number of family members.
YouTube's ContentMatch system found copyrighted music in various places throughout this video, and as a result, advertisements appear over those portions of the video. The advertisements are placed by the owners of the copyright for the associated music, and they alone receive any income earned from the ad placement.
Story: In 1953, a Saskatoon Police Sergeant had an idea to reduce firearms-related mischief among city youth: form a shooting club for boys. The club was a success, and this short film was made to document what had happened. The film was sponsored by Canadian Industries Limited's (C-I-L) ammunition division. It's essentially a re-enactment, starring all the people originally involved. As with many films in those days, no audio was recorded, so music was added and a narrator provides the story.
An amazing look at Saskatoon in the fifties, this film - although commercial in nature - shows local authorities solving a social problem, not with new laws or stronger enforcement of laws, but by creating something new that benefits all parties involved. Those were the days.
The closed captions are based on YouTube's automatic captions, heavily edited by me.
Full disclosure: my Dad is one of the original four boys.

A History of Britain in Thirty-six Postage Stamps, Chris West, Maynard Sundman Lecture 2013
Friday, October 25, 2013 at the Smithsonian's National Postal Museum
The author of A History of Britain in Thirty-six Postage Stamps explored his country's recent history through its most fascinating, beautiful, and eccentric postage stamps. From Queen Victoria's Penny Black to the struggles of post-World War II reconstruction, West showed that stamps mirror the events, attitudes, and styles of their time. The lecture was followed by a light reception and book signing.
