Puliancholai, Tiruchirappalli City: Tiruchirappalli is the fourth most populous city of Tamil Nadu. It is situated in the centre of the state, on the banks of the Kaveri River. The city is a City corporation, the administrative headquarters of Tiruchirapalli District.
Trichy encompasses Srirangam , the foremost Vaishnavite temple and the biggest functioning Hindu temple in the world. Trichy also emcompasses ThiruAnaikka (ThiruvAnaikkaval), one of the five main abodes (Panchaboodha Sthalam) of Lord Shiva. ThiruvAnaikkaval is the House of Water.
Origins
The name of the town, Tiruchirapalli, originated as a tribute (thiru in Tamil means respected) to a Jain monk called Chira. There is also a belief that Tiruchirapalli was named after a three headed demon Trishira (the son of Ravana) who performed penance at the Siva temple here and obtained boons here.
There is yet another belief about the origins of the name Trichy. Apparently the name started out as Thiru Javvandhipuram (Place of Marigold flowers; javvandhi, the Tamil name for the flower Marigold which grew (and still does) in abundance in and around this region and the word puram refers to a place of dwelling) which over time became corrupted to Trichy.
History:
Tiruchirapalli is home to many historic temples, monuments, churches and mosques. Uraiyur (also pronounced as Oraiyur) which is the Old Tiruchy has a long tradition. With over 2,500 years of known history, it was the capital of the early Cholas. The oldest man made dam Kallanai was built by Karaikala Cholan across the river Kaveri about 10 miles from Uraiyur. It was an important town in the days of the later Cholas, Nayaks as well as during the early days of the British East India Company. The conquest of Tiruchirapalli by the British East India Company marked a major step in the British conquest of India.

Utthamar Kovil ~ Saptha Guru Isthala / Pichadanar temple*
1. The trinity gods, who are Brahmah, Vishnu and Shiva, are gracefully residing here with their consorts Saraswathi, Maha Lakshmi and Parvathi at individual shrines respectively.
2. It has the feature of next to Sri Rangam, out of the 108 Divya Desams of lord Vishnu.
3. Out of Lord Shiva's 63 'Moorthangal', the 'Pichadanar' incarnation has been said, to be originated from here.
4. Saptha (7) Gurus - Namely Brahmah, vishnu Shiva, Sakthi, Subramanyar (Muruga), Deva Guru Pragaspathi and Asura Guru Sukracharya have been residing here at their individual shrines grace fully.
Pichadanar has been one of the forms of lord Shiva's 63 'Moorthangal' (appearances). He who pinched out the 5th head of lord Brahmah as Brahmah had been in guilt of having thought that He had equalled with lord Shiva. As the
result of that execution, Pichadanar had been affected with 'Brahmahathi Thosam' (killing of a Brahmin) and the skull of the 5th head of Brahmah had affixed with Pichadanar's hand permanently. So Pichadanar was in severe hunger, as the remedy had been the one, that whenever the skull would have been filled with full of meals, then only, Pichadar had been curse released. In this condition, Pichadanar had come to this Isthala, the Utthamar kovil.
When Pichadanar reached this place with hunger, lord Purusothamar (Vishnu) just had one kind glance to His Consort Puranavalli and She had filled the skull with full meals and the skull had been overflown with the meals, as a result, the skull had disappeared from the hand of Pichadanar and He had been curse
released thereafter. This has been the legend from the side of Vaishnavam, whereas another legend has also been there from the side of Saivam.
It's been said that one place called as 'Tharugavanam which had been said within the reach of 15 K.m from here. There some rishies called as 'Tharugavana
rishies' who were very proud of themselves that they were enough to pave way for the mankind to reach immortality, as they thought that the 'karma' (previous birth's good and bad activities) of oneself had been the determining factor of their lives at present and there would be no need for god to guide them. Their 'Pathinis' (wives) also thought that nobody in the 3 worlds (ladies) could match with them in beauty. In order to teach them a lesson, lord Shiva appeared in the form of Pichadanar, who had been naked with the begging bowl in His hand. He took that form as begging had been one of the easy way to approach the rishi pathinis of Tharughavanam.
Pichadanar accompanied with 'Mohini', the female incarnation of lord Vishnu of stunning beauty, first reached the ashram of the rishi pathinis of Tharughavanam. He had begged them in His mesmerizing voice. The rishi pathinis came out and surrendered to the handsome appearance of Pichadanar not only, but also ashamed about their proud thought of being remaining beauty, when saw Mohini
with Him. Next Pichadanar and Mohini reached the 'Yagha sala', where the rishies were doing the 'Yagnam', followed by the rishi pathinis. Having seen this, the rishies got angry over Pichadanar and sent an elephant from the yagnam to kill Pichadanar. But Pichadanar killed that elephant and wore on Him.
Then, the rishies sent a tiger from the yagnam to kill Pichadanar, but He in turn, killed the tiger and wore it's skin on his hip. They sent poisonous snakes to kill Him, but Pichadanar wore them as jewels on Him. Again the rishies sent Deer, Mazha-weapon, Fire (badaba) and finally the gaint Bootha called as 'Abasmaram'. But lord shiva, in the form of Pichadanar had killed the bootha and placed it under His right leg. He placed the deer, Mazha-weapon and badaba fire at His hands. At last the rishies sent the 'Mantras' and 'Vedas' to kill Him. But
lord Shiva made them as the sounds of His musical instrument, 'Udukai' and His foot wear called as 'Silambu'. Atlast the rishies surrendered the feet of lord Shiva.
