Naamfon's Rescue, Thailand

In October 2014, BLES elephant sanctuary rescued Naamfon, a 63 year old elephant who had been working her whole life.

Upon our arrival at the trekking camp in Pattaya, the mahouts wanted to force Naamfon into the truck themselves, but BLES would never allow this. Without using hooks or any such force, it took a long time for her to accept boarding the truck, but she eventually, and dramatically, got on.

Transporting her overnight from Pattaya to BLES in Sukhothai, Northern Thailand, was tiring for everyone, but we knew what awaited her at the other end.

These three elephants, who were rescued from a life of logging and public entertainment, are now experiencing the next level of improved elephant welfare at Boon Lott's Elephant Sanctuary (BLES) in Sukhothai, Thailand.

Thanks to the efforts of Elephant Aid International, in collaboration with BLES, Wassana, Lotus and Pong Dow are the first residents of solar powered chain-free corrals in Thailand.

Their enthusiasm is obvious!

Unchaining elephants at BLES

Elephant Aid International in collaboration with Boon Lott's Elephant Sanctuary in Sukhothai, Thailand improved the welfare of resident elephants.

Even though these elephants know a great deal of freedom at their sanctuary, overnight they are chained to keep them from raiding neighboring crop lands.

But today they were released from chains permanently.

Watch as they experience what true autonomy feels like.

Life in a captive environment is not pure freedom as it would be in the wild, but this is as close as it gets for captive-held elephants; freedom from domination, freedom from abuse and freedom from chains.

Katherine Connor, the founder of Boon Lott's Elephant Sanctuary (BLES) in Thailand, works tirelessly to raise global awareness to the plight of Thailand's elephants while simultaneously, fighting to save every Thai elephant from further abuse. Her determination demands that she succeed but time is against her as everyday elephants suffer unimaginable abuse. And with no laws to protect Thailand's national symbol, she is fighting an uphill battle.
