The Border Loop
The Cougal Spiral, also known as the Border Loop is located deep within the QLD, NSW border ranges. Located on the QLD - NSW interstate railway line, the spiral consists of a continues 1 in 66 grade climb, giving the line a 30 metre height advantage which was crucial in the rail link between QLD and NSW.
This video captures 7MB4 with NR's 11, 17 and AN 8 class locomotives pulling its 1.5km train through the spiral on Monday 12th March 2018.

The Pinnacle, Border Ranges National Park, Northern NSW
It was only 3 degrees at the base of the mountain, I missed my turnoff and went 30kms past it and added an hour to my trip, I was in a desperate need to go the toilet and couldn't find a public loo anywhere at 4.30am, so I nearly pooed my pants, it was incredibly windy and only 10 degrees at the summit, but in the end, was it worth it? Watch the video to find out!
At over 1100 metres high, the Pinnacle Lookout faces east towards Mt Warning, and is on the western edge of the Tweed Cladera (volcanic crater). It's a short walk from the carpark and features stunning views of the Border Ranges escarpment that was once part of a volcano that Mt Warning was the centre of.
There's two picnic areas on the same road (Blackbutt Lookout with great views of Mt Warning and tables and toilets) and Bar Mountain Picnic Area with tables, toilets and a 4km return walk to the Bar Moutanin lookout. Both are very pleasant, relaxing areas.
Be warned, the road up the mountain is narrow and winding with loose gravel and gets rough at times. Your car will end up very dirty and possibly even damaged! Upon returning home I had to remove one of my front wheels to dislodge a stone caught in the brake caliper that was making an awful raquet!
