BORJ NORD (North Tower)
Borj North is a small fortress type structure built on the hilltop in the north of city of Fez in 1588 on the orders of Sultan Ahmad al-Mansoor to keep an eye on the happenings in the city as well as to guard the city. A similar Borj Sud (South Tower) was built in the southern hilltop which helped the guards to keep a vigil eye on the surroundings of the city. From Borj North one can have a beautiful view of the city of Fez.

Le Borj Nord est un fort élevé en 1588 au nord de Fès, au Maroc, sur ordre du sultan Ahmed al-Mansur, dont le plan s'inspire de l'architecture des forteresses portugaises du xvie siècle. Il était l'un des plus grands postes de surveillance de la ville de Fès et servait également de fabrique de canons.
De plan carré, les quatre coins sont dotés de quatre bastions en forme de fers de lance. La terrasse est conçue de manière à résister au poids et aux tirs des canons.
Ayant servi de caserne puis de prison du temps du Protectorat français, le monument abrite depuis 1963 le Musée des Armes.

My FIRST FULL DAY IN FEZ - MOROCCO. Here I visited the largest Medina in the world, climbed Borj Nord so see and incredible view back over Fez, saw lots of Goats and had some a big tasty Tajine.
I appreciate all of your patience with my uploading, I chose to pile up my videos and bring them back to England to free up time while I was away as I don't have the ability to edit quickly. Plus the wifi was slack over there...

3. FEZ: Medina, curtidurías de cuero y mirador Borj Nord (1/2) #JantoEnMarruecos
Tras la llegada a la estación de autobús de Fez, cogí taxi hasta la estación de tren para comprar el billete en primera que cogería dos días después. Una vez solucionado eso, de nuevo tuve que regatear para conseguir un petit taxi a precio decente que me dejara en la zona de entrada a la medina y encontrar albergue. Tras dos intentos, finalmente encontré uno barato pero algo ruidoso, el Hotel Cascade con vistas a Bab Bou Jeloud, una de las puertas de entrada a la medina y tuve el primer contacto gastronómico con Fez, una hamburguesa de camello en Café Clock a precio guiri...
Esperaba encontrarme con una medina repleta de gente intentando venderme de todo pero estaba absolutamente vacía y con la gran mayoría de negocios cerrados. Tras alguna hora caminando por la medina de Fes el Bali (perdido por supuesto), me percaté de que era viernes y como cualquier domingo en España, era normal ese ambiente calmado y sin tiendas abiertas.
Aún así decidí hacer el recorrido recomendado en Lonely Planet. Empecé por la Madrasa Bou Inania y más tarde conseguí que un niño marroquí por unos dirhams me guiara a ver las curtidurías de cuero, absolutamente perdidas en el laberinto de calles. Por supuesto me llevó a la tienda de un conocido suyo que estaba recién levantado de siesta. Con un poco de mal humor me subió hasta su terraza con vistas a las curtidurías y sus pocas ganas de explicar, el sueño y sus ganas de vender dieron como resultado una experiencia no muy agradable como explico en el vídeo. A cambio de un pequeño enfado del hombre y de unos empujones me ahorré los típicos dirhams que siempre piden por esta experiencia...
El paseo por la vacía medina continuó por la Plaza Nejjarine, pasando por la Zagüía de Mulay Idriss, centro relogioso en la que volví a aparecer sin querer tras perderme durante 1 hora. Tras reubicarme conseguí llegar a la Universidad islámica de Qarawiyyin o Al-Karaouine, la más antigua de la historia y ahora reconvertida en mezquita.
Finalmente, con el deseo frustrado de disfrutar del hammam en Plaza Seffarine, cogí un taxi con dirección a Borj Nord, una zona alta de la ciudad desde la que se disfruta una vista genial de toda la medina de Fez el Bali. Recomendable 100% para terminar una larga jornada de pateo por la ciudad.

FÈS EL DJID - Bab Semmarine et Le mellah ( l'ancien Quartier Juif )
Bab Semmarine, cette haute porte reconstruite en 1924, constitue l’authentique entrée du quartier de Fès El-Jdid (la ville nouvelle de Fès ) en passant cette porte, on pénètre dans une rue commerçante très animée. Le mellah, désigne un lieu où l'on conserve des produits avec le sel, mais dans chaque ville il est utilisé pour désigner le quartier juif.

Morocco was a place we were slightly nervous to visit. On landing our experience at the airport was nice. Finding a taxi was quite the event and getting to the Riad Fes where we stayed was a learning experience. The Riad we stayed at was in the middle of the Médina which is massive and no cars can get in. The taxi driver drops you off on the outside and you walk down these winding alleys. The Riad Fes was like staying in a tea set, incredibly beautiful. Being in the Médina is definitely different then any other place we’ve been or stayed. The food was flavorful with every bit leaving you wanting more. It seemed everything was good. Below are a few of the highlights from the places we saw and things we did.
