GEORGIA | Borjomi-Kharagauli National Park
Borjomi-Kharagauli National Park is in the centre of the country and it constitutes 1% of the territory of Georgia. The forested area has retained its natural state and there are a number of animal species, such as the Bezoar Goat, which were quite numerous in the past, then completely disappeared here. Today, they are being reintroduced in these mountainous places, in a system of semi-captivity.

Borjomi-Kharagauli, surrounded by the magical atmosphere of the Lower Caucasus, is the most visited Park in Georgia and has a large number of recreational activities on offer.
Interview with the Ranger from Borjomi National Park...
“Borjomi-Kharagauli National Park is the largest in Europe. Since 2006 Borjomi–Kharagauli National Park has been a member of PAN Parks. The number of tourists to the National Park is increasing every year; they come for horse riding, as well as for hiking and study tours. The infrastructure of the park means that we can organize horse riding tours of different durations. Within the park there are shelters where tourists can stay overnight.”
This 76,000 hectare Park has an abundance of attractions. It is also immensely enjoyable to visit the nearby villages, which alongside medieval relics and local handicrafts, are home to incredibly dynamic people, even if they are 120 years old like Ekatherine, this lady who was born in 1890.
Caucasians live quite a long time, thanks to their physical strength. But besides this they have a natural aid that most probably helps them increase their life-span; “matsoni”, a thick yoghurt that contains two very healthy lactobacilli also used in home-made cheese. This isn’t surprising, given that early in the 20th century, the Nobel prize-winning Russian microbiologist Metchnikoff demonstrated that regular consumption of yoghurt was the cause of longevity in some central European towns.
In 1830, it was rumoured that springs from the Borjomi-Kharagauli Nature Reserve contained healing properties, and 60 years later, the first bottling plant of the now world-famous Borjomi water, was created. It is unique because of its naturally mineralized hydro carbonated sodium and therapeutic qualities. Although the original fountain still works, barely a trace remains of the luxury that characterized this place when it was the summer residence of the Russian Imperial family, the Romanovs.

Borjomi’s mineral water park, dating back to 1850, occupies a narrow, wooded valley. To find it, cross the little Borjomula River just east of Borjomi Park train station, turn right along 9 Aprili and go 600m. The original warm mineral spring, named Ekaterina Spring, sits beneath a pavilion straight ahead of the park entrance (you can fill bottles from it). The commercial Borjomi bottling plants today draw their water from other mineral springs – there are about 40 in the area.
Another interesting angle is you can see this waterfall from above, and Prometheus statue is there. You can take Borjomi Cable car, which is located just in the front before entrance gates of the park.
There are some attractions for kids available in Borjomi mineral water, like there ae a pirate ship, roller coasters and other.
#BorjomiMineralWaterPark occupies a narrow, wooded valley and is a lovely place to walk. This was where the original mineral spring was discovered, and named Yekaterinsky Spring after the governor’s daughter, who was cured here. The park itself dates from 1850. To reach it, cross the little Borjomula River just east of Borjomi Park station, turn right along 9 Aprili and go 600m. Warm mineral water flows from taps in a pavilion straight in front of the entrance (you can fill bottles with it). Most of the park’s facilities – cafes, funfair attractions, a cinema and a cable car (1 GEL each way) which will carry you up to a hilltop Ferris wheel – only operate from about late June to early September. If you walk about 3km upstream through the park, you’ll find a small, natural, spring-fed swimming pool with a constant temperature of about 27°C.
A second public mineral-water spring (this one cold) emerges inside a metal cage over the Borjomula River just outside the park: cross the footbridge opposite 9 Aprili 46, then go left for about 40m. The Borjomi bottling plants draw their water from other mineral springs – there are about 40 in the area.

(BKNP)(Georgian: ბორჯომ-ხარაგაულის ეროვნული პარკი, borjom-kharagaulis erovnuli parki) is a protected area in central Georgia, situated in the Lesser Caucasus, southwest to the nation's capital of Tbilisi. Its ecoregion is that of the Caucasus mixed forests.
One of the largest national parks in Georgia, it includes six administrative districts stretching from the resort of Borjomi to the town of Kharagauli. Together with adjacent Borjomi Nature Reserve, the total area is 851 square kilometres, i.e. more than 1 % of the total territory of Georgia. The park was founded in 1995 and officially inaugurated in 2001.
Its particular uniqueness is diversity of geographical and ecological zones, landscapes, historical monuments and rich flora and fauna. The park has rapidly developing tourist infrastructure.
#HISTORY
The history of the park dates back to Medieval times when it was used primarily by the local aristocracy for hunting.
When Georgia lost its independence and became part of the Russian Empire, the Grand Duke Michael Nicolaievich was given the post of Governor General of Transcaucasia. He found the local beauty of the Borjomi park so impressive he decided to build his personal summer residence there.
Noticeable changes to the park came when the Grand Duke Michael restricted any lumbering or hunting without permission, thus laying the foundation for the park's future.
In 1995, the Borjomi-Kharagauli National Park was endorsed and created with the support of the World Wildlife Fund and the German government, and was officially inaugurated in 2001.

Borjomi (Georgian: ბორჯომი) is a resort town in south-central Georgia with a population of 10,546.[1] It is one of the districts of the Samtskhe-Javakheti region and is situated in the northwestern part of the region in the picturesque Borjomi Gorge on the eastern edge of the Borjomi-Kharagauli National Park. The town is noted for its mineral water industry (which is the number one export of Georgia), the Romanov summer palace in Likani, and the World Wide Fund for Nature-site Borjomi-Kharagauli National Park. Borjomi mineral water is particularly well known in those countries which were part of the former Soviet Union; the bottling of mineral water is a major source of income for the area. Because of the supposed curative powers of the area's mineral springs, it is a frequent destination for people with health problems. Borjomi is also home to the most extensive ecologically-themed amusement park in the Caucasus.

Borjomi-Kharagauli National Park Hike
We ditched Bee-bee for the day and explored Borjomi-Kharagauli National Park the only way you can, by hiking. The ranges of the Lesser Caucasus in southern Georgia are less well known and less high than the Great Caucasus, but they still contain some very beautiful and wild country. The park is one of the largest in Europe and spreads north and west of Borjomi, famed for its spring water.
