Cape Town born and raised - Going home for a 1 week visit
In October 2018, we visited Liv's hometown - Cape Town South Africa. We spent a week there doing a combination of seeing old friends and tourist stuff. This isn't a traditional travel vlog, but it does document our trip to Cape Town.
Note: Much of the music in this video is by Isibane se Afrika. We came across them performing at The Waterfront -- which is in the video. Look them up! They are on Facebook. Here is a video interview with the organizer:
Note 2: The drought that affected Cape Town had a big impact on World of Birds (highlighted in the video). Look them up as well and consider making a donation to support them.
Note 3: The drone footage is from this video by South Africanism
Day 1: We met with Richard, Liv's former stepdad. He was kind enough to lend us his apartment while we were in Cape Town. He encouraged to go view the Green Point Lighthouse even though it was closed. The attendant was really nice and let us go up anyway.
After that, we strolled and explored Green Point and Sea Point. We ended up at Mojo market where we had our first dinner with grilled calamari.
Day 2: We took the Red Bus to downtown Cape Town. We spent the day checking out Green Market Square and the Castle of Good Hope. We also visited the famous Charly's Bakery -- owned by the family of one of Liv's childhood friends. Another stop was at Truth Coffee that has a great steampunk decor.
Day 3: We spent the morning touring Kirstenbosch National Botanic Gardens. We ate lunch at the Tea House and dessert was provided by another friend of Liv's family who is the chef/manager of the Tea House.
Next we went to Groot Constantia, one of the many wineries near Cape Town. As you can see in the video, we did some wine tasting.
Day 4: We hopped on the Red Bus again and went down to World of Birds, one of Liv's favorite places as a kid. The birds are great, but they also have monkeys. One of the best parts of the trip was visiting the monkeys during feeding time.
After that, we spent some time in Camps Bay -- where Liv actually grew up. In fact, we were able to see her old house. We also checked out a great seafood restaurant that didn't have a menu. You pick what seafood you want and then they make it for you.
Dinner was in Cape Town at a Taqueria. Definitely a bit different than taquerias I have been too, but it was pretty good. The margaritas were great!
Day 5: We had a long, but fun hike of Lion's Head followed by some ice cream.
Later, we went to The Waterfront to shop. That's when we found Isibane se Afrika. They sound great and seeing them live was a real treat.
Day 6: This say started with a Secret Sunrise in Noordhoek. We spent time with one of Liv's high school friends and visited Boulders Beach -- famous for the colony of penguins that live there.
The end of the day was marked with a special dinner at GOLD Restaurant. Because we didn't really get to celebrate my birthday a week earlier, Liv arranged for this unique celebration. To top it all off, my cake was delivered on the head of a dancer and it was made by Charly's Bakery with the theme of Itchy-O and Meow Wolf.
Day 7: We wound down our trip with a leisurely drive down to Chapman's Peak. We also stopped for fish and chips in Hout Bay -- known for their fish and chips.
The day ended with dinner and drinks at the Grand Africa Cafe and Beach.
Day 8: We finally had to head home. We said goodbye and thanks to RIchard for the use of his apartment. At the airport, we had our last meal in Africa -- peri peri chicken.

The Maqam Of Sheikh Yusuf In South Africa
The maqam of Sheikh Yusuf (Tuan Yusuf) in Faure, Cape Town, South Africa.
Sheikh Yusuf was born at Macassar in 1626. He was also known as Abadin Tadia Tjoessoep. He was of noble birth, a maternal nephew of King Biset of Goa. He studied in Arabia under the tutelage of several pious teachers.
The capture of Macassar by the Dutch, made it impossible for Sheikh Yusuf to return to his native land. Thus, when he left Jeddah in 1664 he did not sail to Goa, but to Banten in Western Java.
In 1684 he was captured by the Dutch and incarcerated in the castle of Batavia. He was then transferred and detained in Ceylon. On 27 June 1693 he was shipped to the Cape Of Good Hope.
The voyage to the Cape was filled with mysterious events. On the way to the Cape, the fresh water supply was runnning out. When Sheikh Yusuf became aware of this he merely put his foot in the sea, and told the men to let down the casks at that spot. When they pull up the casks, they discovered, that the salt water from the sea was fresh and good to drink.
When Sheikh Yusuf arrived at the Cape, on the Voetboeg, he was royally welcomed by Governor Simon van der Stel. His Indonesian background necessitated that he and his 49 followers be settled well away from Cape Town. They were housed on the Farm Zandvliet, near the mouth of the Eerste River, in the general area now called Macassar.
The settlement soon became a santuary for fugitive slaves. It was here that the first cohesive Muslim community in South Africa was established. The first settlement of Muslims in South Afica was a vibrant one, despite its isolation. It was from here that the message of Islam was spread to the slave community living in Cape Town. When Sheikh Yusuf died on 23 May 1699, he was buried on the hill overlooking Macassar at Faure.

Here is some more info about the Gatsby a truly South African Food.
The delicious sandwich originated in the Cape Flats around four decades ago, and was a cheap and filling meal for families, factory workers and laborers. Over the years, many locals have laid claim to the super sandwich, but without solid proof these stories are mere hearsay. The name of the meal, however, is believed to be inspired by F. Scott Fitzgerald’s famous novel, The Great Gatsby, due to its association with ‘excess’. What we do know is that the gatsby is a cultural symbol of Cape Town, and is best enjoyed with friends and family.
