Bornholm, Denmark - The Sunshine Island
Bornholm is a Danish island in the Baltic Sea, to the east of the rest of Denmark, south of Sweden, northeast of Germany and north of the westernmost part of Poland. The main industries on the island include fishing, dairy farming, and arts and crafts such as glass production and pottery using locally worked clay. Tourism is important during the summer. There is an especially large number of Denmark's round churches on the island.
The island is called The Sunshine Island because of its weather and The Rock Island because of its geology, which consists of granite, except along the southern coast. The heat from the summer is stored in the rock formations and the weather is quite warm until October. As a result of the climate, a local variety of the common fig, known as Bornholm's Diamond, can grow locally on the island.
Strategically located in the Baltic Sea, Bornholm has been fought over for centuries. It has usually been ruled by Denmark, but also by Lübeck and Sweden. The ruin of Hammershus, at the northwestern tip of the island, is the largest medieval fortress in northern Europe, testament to the importance of its location.
It typically takes 3 hours for passengers and freight to travel between Rønne and Copenhagen via Ystad in Sweden.
The island's varied geography and seascapes attract visitors to its many beauty spots from the Hammeren promontory in the northwest to the Almindingen forest in the centre and the Dueodde beaches in the southeast. Of special interest are the rocky sea cliffs at Jons Kapel and Helligdomsklipperne, the varied topography of Paradisbakkerne and rift valleys such as Ekkodalen and Døndalen. Bornholm's numerous windmills include the post mill of Egeby and the well-kept Dutch mill at Aarsdale. The lighthouse at Dueodde is Denmark's tallest, while Hammeren Lighthouse stands at a height of 85 metres above sea level and Rønne Lighthouse rises over the waterfront.
The island hosts examples of 19th- and early-20th-century architecture, and about 300 wooden houses in Rønne and Nexø, donated by Sweden after World War II, when the island was repairing damage caused by the war. The island is home to 15 medieval churches, four of which are round churches with unique artwork and architecture. The ancient site of Rispebjerg has remains of sun temples from the Neolithic and earthworks from the Iron Age.

Bornholm part 1
On national road no. 93 we reached the ferry crossing in the south of Swinoujscie. This is a crossing designed for visitors. The locals and pedestrians have a ferry crossing in the city centre. We arrived quite early so we only waited about a kilometre long traffic jam for 30 minutes. The ferry crossing is free of charge. Finally we got on the ferry and admired the views.
The weather was getting worse every minute. We were able to do our shopping in Swinoujscie quite well. I drove fuel to the car and about 10:00 a. m. we set off along Wojska Polskiego Street to Germany. We chose a road that stretched along the coast, which turned out to be a big mistake. Not only that the rain was falling apart for good, we stayed in traffic jams every now and then. For the first hour we only covered 36 km and had about 160 km to Sassnitz from the border.
The ferry from Mukran near Sassnitz sailed to Rone on Bornholm at 14:00 a. m. In order for us not to miss the course we had to be at least 10 minutes before the ferry departs. The voltage increased with every minute. At some point we got stuck in front of Wolgast in such a traffic jam that we knew we would not be able to get there. We have found alternative routes. Everyone was already in the game. Even field roads. I didn't record it because it was a lot of emotions, very fast decisions and a lot of rocking on the choices. Suffice it to say that the car cork was behind us.
So we have moved forward. We went further more efficiently and although some small traffic jams we still met it in the vicinity of Sassnitz we arrived at 13:30 pm.
And here the second and third problem began. It turned out that each of us thought that we were going by ferry from Sassnitz itself. And there were two ports, that is in Sassnitz and Mukran, about 8 km before Sassnitz. Quick decision. We are going to the nearest port, to Mukran. When we get there we see signposts. We already knew that this was the right choice.
The last problem that remained was parking. In Sassnitz we knew where the car park is, but here? None of us knew. Beata jumped out of the car, she got rid of someone. It is there. A kilometre further. We are running. The parking lot was a square for 20 minutes until 14:00. The barrier is rising as 12 euros are thrown away. He accepts coins and no one of us has them for anger. Fortunately, we meet a man who informs us that the barriers are broken and you can also park them. He did this by leaving the car for a week. So we leave the cars in front of the barriers. After all, only for five days. Quickly unpacking bikes and luggage. We are closing the cars and on the road. The ferry is 2 km away. It is 13:50. It is about stopping the ferry. Several border gates are still carrying out checks on cars and a few are empty. The empty ones are open and unattended. We pass through them without hesitation. Nobody is holding us back, nobody is rushing for us, no one is calling. We are not looking back. We will fall into the square, where there are still a few cars waiting to enter the ferry. We breathe with relief. It is 14th in a minute. It turns out that the ferry has a delay of more than 30 minutes and the cyclists enter the last one.
Road and bad luck on the ferry. We are bored. There is nothing to write about.
From Rønne we get through the park to the Aakirkeby cycle path. We have 19 km to the target. My friend says that the reception desk is closed at 20:00 am. It's 19:00 pm and we did not drive until 5 km. We are running. We have made it possible. Surprise on the spot. If someone has a sleeping bag, they must also have a sheet. If it is not possible, he has to buy bed linen for 60 Danish crowns.
13 August is Sunday. We leave late, but a short route. Only 60 km. We are going to Svaneke and Nexø. We are going to see everything along the way. The route is not fixed. Modify it while driving. Nexø is at 6:00 p. m. Everything closed. We shop and go home

BEAUTIFUL PROPELLER VORTEX on ATR 72 and DASH 8 TakeOff - OY-LHB LN-RDV Spiral Slipstream
WATCH THE 2X SPIRAL PROPELLER VORTICES! This is footage of two Propeller Vortices (2 x propeller vortex or Propeller Vapour) appearing on two separate turboprop passenger aircraft during takeoff at Copenhagen Airport (CPH) in Denmark. The first aircraft where this vapour vortex appears is an ATR 72 operated by DAT, and the second Propeller Vortex is on a Dash 8 aircraft operated by Widerøe. I searched Wikipedia for more information about Propeller Vortices and did not find much information about this phenomenon. The closest beast of information which could be related to the vortex formed by the propellers is an article about SPIRAL SLIPSTREAM which forms behind a rotating propeller.
Wiki writes about Spiral Slipstream, Spiral slipstream (also known as spiraling slipstream, propwash in the US, or just slipstream in the UK) is a spiral-shaped slipstream formed behind a rotating propeller on an aircraft. The most noticeable effect resulting from the formation of a spiral slipstream is the tendency to yaw nose-left at low speed and full throttle (in center line tractor aircraft with a clockwise-rotating propeller.) This effect is caused by the slipstream acting upon the tail fin of the aircraft: the slipstream causes the air to rotate around the forward-aft axis of the aircraft, and this air flow exerts a force on the tail fin, pushing it to the right. To counteract this, some aircraft have the front of the fin (vertical stabilizer) slightly offset from the centreline so as to provide an opposing force that cancels out the one produced by the slipstream, albeit only at one particular (usually cruising) speed, an example being the Hawker Hurricane fighter from World War II...
The first aircraft taking off is a ATR-72 which is operated by DAT (Danish Air Transport) and has aircraft registration OY-LHB. This aircraft (which is displaying a spiral propeller vortex) with flight number DX540 is taking off from Copenhagen Airport and heading for Bornholm Airport (RNN).
Wiki writes about Bornholm Airport, Bornholm Airport is a Danish airport located 2.7 nautical miles southeast of Rønne, on the island of Bornholm. The airport is operated by Statens Luftfartsvæsen with the air traffic control provided by Naviair...
Wiki writes about the ATR 72 passenger aircraft, The ATR 72 is a twin-engine turboprop short-haul regional airliner built by the French-Italian aircraft manufacturer ATR. A stretched variant of the ATR 42, the aircraft seats up to 74 passengers in a single-class configuration, and is operated by a two-pilot crew...
The second aircraft taking off is a Dash 8 operated by Widerøe and has aircraft registration LN-RDV. This aircraft (which is displaying a spiral propeller vortex) with flight number WF306 is taking off from Copenhagen Airport and heading for Sandefjord Airport (TRF).
Wiki writes about Sandefjord Airport, Sandefjord Airport, Torp is an international airport located 4 nautical miles northeast of Sandefjord, Norway and 110 kilometers south of Oslo. The airport features a 2,989-meter runway aligned 18/36...
Wiki writes about the De Havilland Canada DHC-8-402Q Dash 8, The Bombardier Dash 8 or Q-Series, previously known as the de Havilland Canada Dash 8 or DHC-8, is a series of twin-engined, medium range, turboprop airliners. Introduced by de Havilland Canada (DHC) in 1984, they are now produced by Bombardier Aerospace. Over 1,000 Dash 8s of all models have been built, with Bombardier forecasting a total production run of 1,192 aircraft of all variants through to 2016...
This aircraft footage is filmed at the popular Copenhagen Plane Spotter area called Flyvergrillen (A Burger Bar / Fast Food place with a big seating area to spot airplanes) which lies next to Copenhagen Airport close to Runway 04L or 22R and Runway 04R or 22L.

Hammershus is Scandinavia's largest medieval fortification, situated 74 metres (243 ft) above sea level on Hammeren, the northern tip of the Danish island of Bornholm in the Baltic Sea. Erected in the 13th century, it was long believed that the castle was built as a private residence for the archbishop of Lund. However, new evidence found at the ruins of the castle suggests it was constructed in the beginning of the century as a royal residence for Valdemar II of Denmark and a base for the Danish crusades, according to Kjeld Borch Westh, superintendent of the National Museum of Denmark.
The fortification consists of the base castle residence and accompanying Mantel Tower, and includes a great stonewall stretching 750 metres (2,460 ft) around the castle grounds. Bricks found at the tower during the renovation led Westh and other experts to revise their theory on when the structure was originally constructed, moving back the date from around 1255 to the beginning of the century, when Valdemar became king.
During a number of successive struggles between the kings of Denmark versus the Archbishopric, the fortress, serving as a refuge for the Archbishops, e.g. Jens Grand, was conquered by the king's army on a number of occasions, e.g. 1259, 1265, 1319, and 1325. In 1521, it was taken by king Christian II, who used it to imprison Bishop Jens Andersen Beldenak of Funen. The fortress was conquered by forces of Lübeck the same year.
In 1658, Hammershus was occupied by Swedish forces, but a rebellion on the island terminated the Swedish rule. The rebels, led by Jens Pedersen Kofoed, shot the Swedish commandant Johan Printzenskiöld, and the Danish peasants traveled to Copenhagen to return the island to the king of Denmark. Corfitz Ulfeldt and his wife Leonora Christina were imprisoned in Hammershus 1660–1661, and the fortress was used as a prison on several other occasions.
The fortress was partially demolished around 1750 and is now a ruin. It was partially restored around 1900.
Visitors to Hammershus have views of the coastline and the sea surrounding Bornholm. South of the castle is a deep valley, water filled hollows, and dense forest. There are a number points before arriving at castle where enemies could be stopped. The castle was built with box-like rooms surrounded by rings of fortifications. Each provided an additional layer of protection from invaders. Two natural spring ponds provided fresh drinking water on the side of the castle. Hammershus Fortress features a 750-metre-long (2,460 ft) perimeter wall and features a grand tower called the mantel tower.
Hammershus is the largest medieval fortification in Northern Europe.
Because of the unusual light on Bornholm, and because it has only four hours of darkness in summer, many of Denmark's earliest artists chose to paint views of Hammerhus. One of the most notable is by Anton Eduard Kieldrup, created in 1849, which is on display at the Bornholm Art Museum.[

Bornholm is a Danish island in the Baltic Sea located to the east of (most of) the rest of Denmark, the south of Sweden, and the north of Poland. The main industries on the island include fishing, arts and crafts like glass making and pottery using locally worked clay, and dairy farming. Tourism is important during the summer. The topography of the island consists of dramatic rock formations in the north(Unlike the rest of Denmark - the rest of Denmark is a very flat land, having few hills and no mountains), sloping down towards pine and deciduous forests (greatly damaged by storms in the 1950s) and farmland in the middle and sandy beaches in the south.
Strategically located in the Baltic Sea, Bornholm has been a bone of contention usually ruled by Denmark, but also by Lübeck and Sweden. The castle ruin Hammershus, on the northwestern tip of the island, is the largest medieval fortress in northern Europe, testament to the importance of its location.
Bornholm er med Christiansø og Frederiksø Danmarks østligste øer. Bornholm kaldes også for klippeøen eller solskinsøen.
