부산 국제시장 - Walking around Gukje Market, Busan, Korea
Gukje Market or Nampodong International Market is a market in Sinchang-dong, Jung District, Busan, South Korea.
Following the Korean War, refugees who fled to Busan set up stalls in order to make a living, and this was the beginning of the Gukje Market (gukje meaning international in Korean). The Gukje Market is one of Korea’s largest markets; each alleyway is crowded with stalls, and it connects to Bupyeong Market, Kkangtong Market, and other smaller markets. The market stocks such a wide variety of goods, that you can find almost everything you need right here.

[4 Angles] Gong's Bookstore
헌 책방 '공씨 책방' 의 하루
Gong's Bookstore is one of the first second-hand bookshops in Korea, established in 1972 by Gong Jin-seok. The store has a large collection of second-hand books, including the first editions of classic books and out-of-print books. Sadly, Gong passed away in 1990, but his family has been maintaining his legacy over the last 27 years. What's a day of this old second-hand bookshop like?
Analogue Alley Forty Steps in Jung-gu, Busan_아날로그 골목, 부산중구 40계단 이야기
A Story of Special Steps
Disappearing slowly, but with unforgettable memories...
This street still preserves the same appearance of decades ago.
It even displays the tragedy of wartime.
Sin Chun-sik: Before Korea was developed during the 1960s, we had to go through many difficult times such as the Korean War in 1950. They were really tough times, truly!
Kim Jong-gil: It was hard. The city was crowded with countless refugees... and we were all facing difficult situations.
Here is a building to commemorate the harsh times.
Forty Steps Cultural Center
Yi Mi-yeon : The Forty Steps Cultural Tourism Theme Street was established to display numerous artifacts used decades ago and to exemplify what it looked like during the Korean War.
The items on display must have been very common back in those days, but they've become unfamiliar now.
Kids and youngsters might think they are quite interesting.
Do you wonder where it is?
It's just across the street from Busan Station, in Jungang-dong, Jung-gu, Busan.
It is said that refugees used to sit here on the steps to ease their tired souls while drinking a bowl of makgeolli.
The Forty Steps connects two regions of Busan, Dongwang-dong and Jungang-dong. During wartime, many people used the steps to go to work, for example, to nearby harbors and markets. So to speak, the steps represented the hard life of those people.
Sometimes, a song on the steps made them relaxed for a while.
Nothing to wear... Nothing to eat... Everything was just insufficient.
However, there was surely one thing left.
Song Gang-hui: When a rice puff man appeared in an alley carrying popped rice or fried rice crackers, we had to try hard to make him give us some of them. It was sad and we were still hungry. But we didn't lose hope.
The hope.
The world changed a lot, but some things never change.
Sitting here, I sing a song about that which doesn't change.
We always carry hope in our minds.
Once valuable memories are now disappearing slowly.
However, we can find it again at this place.

New Chapter in Life on Jeju Island - Patrick Carle
Patric Carle now teaches English at Dongseo University in Busan. He spends his weekend nights at jazz bars where he plays the violin. Patrick first came to Busan in 1996 out of curiosity, and has been living there ever since - not only because he loves Korea, but also because he met there his life partner, Kang Jung-hwa.
Whenever they have time, the couple likes to backpack to see various places. Traveling is now part of their routine. Since 2009 these two people have finished all 26 olle trails on Jeju Island, which has more than 360 volcanic cones called oreum and some 160 lava caves. It is a world-renowned tourist attraction that was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2007. The beautiful mountains, sea and simple alleys of the island inspired the couple to make a new start in life - not as tourists but as island residents.
Patrick and his wife decided to settle down on Jeju, but before moving there for good they visited the island as tourists for the last time. The purpose of their trip is to learn how to run a guest house. Join us to see Jeju's most scenic olle trails and hear the stories of people who moved to the island recently.
Bookworms welcome! An introduction to the world's largest book city Jimbocho!
If you love books, Jimbocho is the place to go!
With about 200 bookstores, Jimbocho has a lot to offer. Most of the bookshops sell antique and rare books, however, they also offer a variety of other print media, such as old maps, old movie posters, and movie scripts. Furthermore, some bookstores are specialized in one genre, such as manga (comic) books, architecture related books, and art books and exhibition catalogs. Whether you are doing some research on old Japan, you study Japanese, or you are just looking for some nice home decor articles, Jimbocho is worth a visit!
These are some of our bookstore recommendations!
◆ ◆ ◆
◆ ◆ Antique books, maps and woodblock prints from the Edo period: OHYA SHOBO
Ohya Shobo
The first thing that catches your eye is the huge map of Edo Tokyo in the shop window of this bookstore. When entering the shop, shelves over shelves filled with antique books and scripts from the Edo period (1603-1868) will astonish you. The shop offers books from every genre you could think of, such as history, literature, art, calligraphy, tea ceremony, martial arts, medicine, picture books, etc. Old maps and ukiyo-e woodblock prints can be used as beautiful home decor.
◆ ◆ Art books, catalogs and artist's memoirs: BOHEMIAN'S GUILD
Bohemian's Guild
This is a must-go bookstore for everyone who loves art! The store offers an eclectic collection of foreign and Japanese art books, artists' books, and exhibition catalogs. Behind the cash register and on the second floor, several showcases show original art pieces by Takehisa Yumeji, Ogai Mori's drafts and letters from Ryunosuke Akutagawa.
◆ ◆ All about architecture - from old books to the latest volumes: NANYODO SHOTEN
Nanyodo Shoten
This bookstore is all about architecture. So it comes as no surprise that the building of the shop itself is a beautiful concrete architecture with a large window that makes the structure look light and welcoming. The first and second-floor offer are old and new Japanese architecture books as well as magazine back numbers, while the 3rd-floor has a collection of Western books.
◆ ◆ Looking for the latest manga issues or cute accessories? Check out BOOKS SANSEIDO
Books Sanseido
With over 1.4 million books of each genre, this bookstore is like a department store for books. If you are looking for the latest Japanese manga, go to the Comic Station on the 6th floor. The huge comic corner offers everything from manga classics to the latest issues. The hand-drawn signature boards of famous manga artist are also worth a look.
◆ ◆ Need a break? Read a book in a Japanese retro café!
Jimbocho area isn't only famous for its bookstores, but also for its retro cafes. One of the most popular ones is the Sabouru, which is nestled in a back alley close to Jimbocho station. The cottage style café seems like a cozy cave and once you go in, you don't want to leave ever again. The settled lighting is just bright enough to read a book. Here, you get great coffee - but if you want to order the local's favorite, you should go for the strawberry juice!
◆ ◆ ◆
Stay tuned for more information about Jimbocho in the future!

Zombie walk in Busan station
Walking through the Ravenswood Used Book Store
This has to be the most amazing book store ever! This place is a mess and extremely unorganized. There a so many book shelves and they are placed so close together that really only 1 person at a time can be in between them. This is me trying to walk through the store. Every where you go you find another shelve full of books! If you want to go to a book store to find something specific...this is NOT the place to go. If you just love books and like finding random treasures within...you need to go to this place. 4626 North Lincoln Avenue, Chicago, IL 60625
