Guayaquil Travel Guide - Ecuador Unforgettable Moments
Guayaquil Travel Guide - Ecuador Unforgettable Moments
Guayaquil is one of the main South American ports in the Pacific. The climate is hot for the first semester of the year and breeze cool for the rest of it. A proud city of the tropics where foreigners are well received, music rules and seafood is a must. In the last decade, the city has undergone positive change. The beautiful riverfront promenade Malecon 2000 , green areas and modern shopping arcades all over the city attracts tourism from inside and outside the country.
The origin of the name Guayaquil derives from the love story myth of Tribal Chief Guayas and his wife Quil. The city was founded on July 25, 1538 with the name Santiago de Guayaquil by Spanish Conquistador Francisco de Orellana. Even before it was founded by the Spanish, it already existed as a native village of the Huancavilca tribe.
A plunder destination for pirates. In 1687, Guayaquil was looted by George d'Hout (English) and Picard and Groniet (Frenchmen). In 1709, the English captains Woodes Rogers, Etienne Courtney, and William Dampier along with hundreds of pirates, attacked Guayaquil and demanded ransom; however, they suddenly departed without collecting when the epidemic of yellow fever broke out.
Metrovia is a modern bus rapid transit system that runs mostly from north to south and east to west of the city. Within the city the local bus system is confusing but the locals will help you get where you want to go. You can also rent a car at one of the few places to rent just outside the airport. Prices range from $25 and up per day. Anyone with a drivers license from their home country can drive as a tourist in Ecuador.
There are about 20 malls in the city and Samborondon. Among the best places to shop:
City Mall
Riocentro Los Ceibos
Plaza Lagos
San Marino
Riocentro Entreríos
Village Plaza
Mall del Sol
Piazza
Three Supermaket chains (Supermaxi, MiComisariato & Megamaxi) are all over the city with superb availability for any need
Mercado Artesanal (An old building but definitely the best place to buy traditional souvenirs)
There are many traditional dishes in the range of seafood, white and red meats. Many with colorful names such as encebollado, seco de pollo, ceviche or caldo de salchicha. The traditional soups and stews this country offers are outstanding. The city has hotels for every pocket and decent hotel rooms can be had for around $10 a night.
Piedra Blanca is just three hours away, where one can take rainforest tours, rafting expeditions and visit local fascinating cultural sites. Other places that you can visit are the beaches at Playas which is about 90 minutes away, and the more popular Salinas beach which is about two hours away up the Via la Costa.
The picturesque barrio of Las Peñas, which perches over the river, anchors the city both geographically and historically, while the principal downtown thoroughfare Avenida 9 de Octubre funnels office workers, residents and shoppers into one hybrid stream. Amid revitalized squares, parks and massive urban-renewal projects, the city has a growing theater, film and arts scene and lively bars, fueled in part by several large universities. Note that all flights to the Galápagos Islands either stop at or originate in Guayaquil, so the city is the next best place after Quito to set up a trip.

Guayaquil, a Destination marked by Progress and Freedom (Documentary)
Known as the Pearl of the Pacific, Guayaquil is the development engine of the country. The maritime port of Guayaquil is considered as one of the most efficient of the Pacific Coast; 80% of the country’s cargo passes through the port of Guayaquil. It is the point of entry into Ecuador, the Galapagos Islands and the world. It is the most visited city of the country if we add up the national and international visitors. The Jose Joaquin de Olmedo airport, the largest in the country, has been recognized by the users, internationally in its category, as the best airport, for its facilities and the services that are provided in an agile and efficient way; it also has one of the best land terminals of South America.
Guayaquil is considered the city with the most progress in the last 20 years. Mayor Jaime Nebot, with a visionary spirit and the creative work of the people of his administration, has taken the city to the highest levels of development and welfare. It is a beautiful city to visit and discover; it has all the tourist attractions that makes it a national and international destination, where the tourists are welcome with affection by its joyful, kind and tropical people.
Guayaquil is my destination
• To know its history, parks, squares, monuments and churches.
• To Know its museums, sculptures and the street art that is exhibited in its murals and wonderful stained-glass windows, which embellish the bridges and buildings of the city.
• To be part of the Route of Faith and to know its massive religious processions and heritage churches.
• To have fun and enjoy its piers, parks, water fountains and the rides through the Guayas River and the Salado Estuary.
• To taste its gastronomy.
• To enjoy its nature. Guayaquil is one of the fewest cities in the world that hosts diverse ecosystems like tropical forests, both humid and dry; mangroves, which alongside estuaries and the majestic Guayas River, have and an incomparable fauna and flora. The beauty of its landscapes makes the city a place to dream. The birds can be observed in the city thanks to the urban regeneration that has created scenarios within the parks, piers, and flowerbeds, which have become a habitat for different endemic species. The dolphins of El Morro represent a great attraction and also the iguanas that can be observed in the Seminario Park.
• Ecuador is the place of orchids and was chosen for having a variety of more than 4.000 species. Guayaquil has diverse orchids that distinguished the city, reason why, the City’s Council picked an orchid to be the emblematic flower of Guayaquil: the “ Encyclia Angustiloba Schltr” that was discovered 200 years ago an that can be appreciated at the botanical garden, hills and different settings where it flowers with its enigmatic beauty. An enormous sculpture will be crafted to represent the orchid in the north area of the city.
We invite you to visit us, you will fall in love with Guayaquil and we are sure that this beautiful city will remain in your hearts with a strong and special beat that will motivate you to come back. We will welcome you with open arms because we are a sheltered port that receives all the people that visit our city with love. Guayaquil is my destination.

Guayaquil, Ecuador - Hemicicle De La Rotonda (Aerial Drone)

With more than 400 years old, Las Peñas was the first neighborhood of Guayaquil, which took its name from the cliffs and limestone rocks that formed the Hill back then when the Spanish settled in the XV century. In 1982 the neighborhood was declared Cultural Heritage of Ecuador and between 2002 and 2008, the place was restored and regenerated by the Municipality of Guayaquil.
