Botanical Garden Lucknow (pt 1)
The National Botanical Research Institute (NBRI), is one of the constituent National Laboratories of the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), New Delhi. It was originally founded as the National Botanic Gardens in 1948.
The Botanic Garden of the Institute has historical records dating back to 1800. The garden was established by Nawab Saadat Ali Khan (1784-1814) as a Royal Garden. Later, Nawab Wajid Ali Shah, the last Nawab of Oudh, developed it further and named it Sikander Bagh after his favourite and beautiful queen Begum Sikander Mahal. (Pl.1)
The Botanic Garden is situated in the heart of Lucknow, the capital of Uttar Pradesh province, and covers an area of 25 ha along the southern bank of the River Gomti at an altitude of 113 m (Lat. 26º55' N., Long. 80º59' E.). The garden serves as a national facility to conserve India's flora and offers opportunities to researchers, students, teachers, plantsmen and garden-lovers from India and abroad. It has a high reputation for its well-identified and aesthetically displayed diversity of plants, comprising a collection of 6,000 indigenous, ornamental and exotic taxa, designed to capture a living nucleus of plant wealth for posterity.
Sharing my personal experience with you, just sitting and breathing there made me feel totally fresh just in a few seconds! It's a must to visit the Botanical Garden if you visit lucknow. You can see hundreds of different plant species! The garden is the ideal place for morning walks and it was seriously so damn amazing going for morning walks with my grandpa to the Botanical Garden!

About NBRI Lucknow:
The CSIR-National Botanical Research Institute (NBRI) - is amongst one of the constituent research institutes of the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), New Delhi. Originally set up as the National Botanic Gardens (NBG) by the State Government of Uttar Pradesh (U.P.), it was taken over by the CSIR in 1953. Though, initially engaged in research in the classical botanical disciplines, the NBG went on laying an increasing emphasis, in keeping with the national needs and priorities in the field of plant sciences, on its applied and developmental research activities. A time came when it was felt that the name NBG no longer projected the correct nature and extent of its aims and objectives, functions and R & D activities. Consequently, the NBG was renamed as the NBRI, i.e., The National Botanical Research Institute in 1978. This name has since correctly reflected the distinctive character and the R & D activities of this applied botanical institution only of its type in the country.

The Acharya Jagadish Chandra Bose Indian Botanic Garden (Hindi:आचार्य जगदिश चंद्र बसु भारतीय वानस्पतिक उद्यान) (previously known as Indian Botanic Garden) is situated in Shibpur, Howrah near Kolkata. They are commonly known as the Calcutta Botanical Garden, and previously as the Royal Botanic Garden, Calcutta. The gardens exhibit a wide variety of rare plants and a total collection of over 12,000 specimens spread over 109 hectares. It is under Botanical Survey of India (BSI) of Ministry of Environment and Forests, Government of India.
The Great Banyan is a banyan tree (Ficus benghalensis) located in Acharya Jagadish Chandra Bose Indian Botanic Garden, Howrah, near Kolkata, India. The great banyan tree draws more visitors to the garden than its collection of exotic plants from five continents. Its main trunk became diseased after it was struck by two cyclones, so in 1925 the main trunk of the tree was amputated to keep the remainder healthy; this has left it as a clonal colony, rather than a single tree. A 330-metre-long (1,080 ft) road was built around its circumference, but the tree continues to spread beyond it.

Kew, the area in which Kew Gardens are situated, consists mainly of the gardens themselves and a small surrounding community. Royal residences in the area which would later influence the layout and construction of the gardens began in 1299 when Edward I moved his court to a manor house in neighbouring Richmond. That manor house was later abandoned; however, Henry VII built Sheen Palace in 1501, which, under the name Richmond Palace, became a permanent royal residence for Henry VII.

Annual Flower Shows
Presently, cultivation and trade of ornamental plants have attained the status of a highly profitable industry in many countries. Owing to lucrative commercial opportunities, floriculture has immense potential for expansion in oocountry. The Institute organized two Annual Flower Shows viz. Rose & Gladiolus in January and Chrysanthemum & Coleus in December.
These shows are of international standard displaying R&D work on ornamental horticulture for promoting interest among the garden lovers, progressive farmers, connoisseurs and general public towards the cultivation of ornamental plants. It provides an opportunity to the scientists, researchers, horticulturists, gardeners and general public for interaction on problems of mutual interest.
Introduction, documentation and improvement of indigenous economic and ornamental plant species are extremely important for maintaining and intensifying the research character of the Botanic Garden. Efforts are underway for the enrichment of germplasm collection of some important groups like Bromeliads, Cycads, Clerodendrum, Ixora, Jasminum, Nerium, Plumeria, orchids, lichens, bryophytes and ferns.
History of National Botanical Research Institute (NBRI)
The origin and development of CSIR-NBRI to its present-day status and size, with a 25-hectare botanical garden, two laboratories complexes, a rich herbarium, a voluminous library, an 85-hectare experimental-cum-extension at Banthra and Aurawan make a fascinating story, set off against a colourful historical back ground, spanning three distinct eras.
1. The Nawabi Era
The garden part of the NBRI encompasses within its limits the historical 'Sikandar Bagh', which was laid out around 1800 A.D., as a royal garden, by Nawab Saadat Ali Khan and was later improved upon by Nawab Wajid Ali Shah, the last king of Avadh, during the first half of the 19th century. It was, in fact, Nawab Wajid Ali Shah who named the garden as Sikandar Bagh, after one of his favourite queens, Sikander Mahal Begum. Measuring about 150 square metre and having a small pavilion in the middle, the garden must have been the venue of innumerable performances of the famous 'Ras-lilas', 'Kathak' dance, music and poetic 'mehfils' and other cultural activities for which the last Nawab was very well known.
The Sikander Bagh was, later, also the venue for a fierce battle during the uprising of 1857, when about 2000 freedom fighters, who had barricaded themselves in the garden, were killed in a vicious British attack. Articles like cannon balls, swords and shields, pieces of muskets and rifles, etc have been accidentally dug out of the garden over the years and are displayed in the NBRI Exposition. Presently the scars of cannon balls on the old walls of the garden, still remind one of that historic event.
