Royal Floral Hall, Rhyl
The Floral Hall on Rhyl promenade was a council-owned attraction which opened in the late 1950s; it was re-opened in 1960 by members of Royal family and renamed Royal Floral Hall. The man with the ceremonial chain is Chairman of the Council, Roy Turner; also in early pictures is his wife June, singer Clwyd Pierce with June, and council officers John McCartan (Parks and Gardens) and Tom Leigh (Publicity). At various times alongside the flowers and plants there were flying birds, a children's zoo and butterfly jungle. The building was demolished in the early 1990s. Slideshow compiled by Colin Jones.

National Botanic Gardens of Wales - Nos 1 Wonder of Wales
Learn why The National Botanical Garden of Wales was voted nos 1 Wonder of Wales and Wales' Best Children's garden - a must whilst staying in our Carmarthenshire Holiday Cottages. qualitycottages.co.uk/carmarthenshire/holiday-cottages-carmarthenshire
The National Botanical Gardens is not your average garden open to the public. There truly is something here for everyone. We defy those non-gardeners staying in our holiday cottages in Carmarthenshire not to enjoy a visit here, however gardeners will be impressed that is was voted No 1 garden to visit in Wales by BBC Gardeners World.
Polly, our roving reporter has the lucky job of traveling across Wales to film the places and people who make a holiday here so special. (Subscribe to our youtube channel 'QualityCottages' for the latest films). The enthusiasm she captures from our film narrators is infectious and David at The Botanical Gardens is no exception. Watch and we are sure you will add a visit into your holiday in Wales straight away.
The mission of the Gardens is to inspire, educate and conserve. With over 8000 different plant varieties, spread across 560 acres, divided into an incredible range of themed gardens, it truly meets its mission. We love the Apothecary Garden - like something from days gone by and find the Ghost Forest created by artist Angela Palmer inspiring - no wonder we at Quality Cottages have chosen to sponsor the guides at this amazing place.
Artist Angela Palmer was in West Africa and she came across the results of illegal logging in the rainforest. She was overcome by a vision of making ambassadors of these tree trunks. There is a quiet majesty about them
If you love the sights and smells of flowers, tick, you will be happy. If you are scientific minded, the DNA research here into plant evolution will fascinate you. If you like to attend events, there is a rolling programme at The Botanical gardens with something for everyone. (There is a great schedule for kids over the school holidays - pond dipping included!). And if you have always hankered after a veggie patch, the vegetable garden will provide you with lots of ideas.
The jewel in the crown of the gardens is the world's largest single spanned glasshouse, designed by Lord Foster, which claims to have the best display of mediterranean climate zone plants in the Northern hemisphere. (Wales' Eden Garden?)
The great glass house is like nothing you've never seen before says David.
An easy day trip for all those staying in our South Wales holiday cottages,Pembrokeshire holiday cottages or Brecon Beacons Holiday Cottages but a lucky treat for those staying just around the corner in our Carmarthenshire holiday Cottages.
Quality Cottages thank David and The Botanical Gardens of Wales for their time and greatly enjoy being sponsors.

The oldest in the UK, 1911 built Rhyl Miniature Steam Railway, North Wales 20/07/2019
On a very windy day, we visited Rhyl Miniature Steam Railway the first to be built in the UK back in 1911, at the end of their working day, for the last service around the lake.
The loco was 'Railway Queen' a 1921 built loco by Albert Barnes. This loco has had a fascinating life before it came to Rhyl.
