The Boulder Gardens - Tumbler Ridge, British Columbia, Canada
Welcome to the Tumbler Ridge Global Geopark! The Boulder Gardens trail leads onto the southeast slopes of Mount Babcock, passing through a landscape of towering rock pinnacles. Some simple rock scrambling is necessary in places.
The dome shaped mass of Mount Babcock has been explored for its coal since the 1970’s, and Quintette Operating Corporation mined for 3 years on its northwest side. The top of the mountain is composed of a thick bed of resistant sandstone. This has slid on the underlying softer shales. Pieces of the sandstone have broken off, forming a labyrinth of large blocks that is known as the Boulder Gardens.
The circular route is best hiked in a counterclockwise direction. It passes through an other-worldly landscape strewn with rock pillars, slabs, and boulders. There are many cracks and crevices between the rocks, so it is advised to stick to the trail and supervise kids carefully. There are two short, interesting side trails: the Chimney Rock side trail leads up a narrow but safe chimney to an impressive view site. The Lichen Towers side trail leads into the heart of one of the most spectacular tower areas.
The route then climbs gently to Boulder Tarn, an exquisite small lake nestling in between the bluffs. Pancake Rocks represent a chaotic assemblage of thin bedded boulders. The Grassi Grind follows the safest route up through a challenging scree and boulder slope. This section ends in a narrow crack. This is the highest point of the circular route, which descends from here through a beautiful dry valley with more views, caves, and boulders.

Mount Reesor and the Caribou Highway - Tumbler Ridge, British Columbia
Welcome to the Tumbler Ridge Global Geopark! The Mount Reesor area offers great alpine hiking close to Tumbler Ridge. Once the top of the ridge is reached, views to the south and west are superb. The ridge top is a barren stretch of brown shale known as the Caribou Highway, where many tracks and sign of the animals can be seen. The “highway” leads to the south towards Mount Reesor looming in the distance. On a good weather day this is excellent hiking, but it is prone to windy and foggy conditions. At the end of the highway, one must descend to a saddle before starting the final climb to the peak.
The route climbs up the northeastern flank of the peak, becoming a bit of a scramble over loose rock near the top. The peak of Mt Reesor is the center of a syncline or trough in the rock strata. Once on
top, there are expansive views of the high peaks of the Rockies, including the glaciated summit of Sentinel Peak to the west. (

Babcock Falls in 4K! Tumbler Ridge, British Columbia
Babcock Falls is an eight metre high waterfall located in the Tumbler Ridge Global Geopark. A short trail leads through pine forests and wetlands to 8 metre high Babcock Falls. The wet sections have wooden boardwalks. Some unique wetland flowers are found along the trail.
The trailhead is 200 metres before the Core Lodge. The parking lot is on the left side of the road at km 13.8. The trail crosses a small creek, crosses the mine access road (watch for truck traffic), descends through swampy willow thickets, then joins a reclaimed exploration road and passes into wet subalpine meadows. The tree and plant species found here contrast with those on the drier slopes of the Boulder Gardens.
The developed trail ends overlooking the falls, but a short steep path leads to the pool right at the base of the falls, which are formed from a lip of resistant sandstone. Fossilized logs can be found in these rocks, especially around one small overhang with a good view of the falls. (wnms.ca)

Dinosaur Discovery Gallery - Tumbler Ridge, British Columbia
The gallery contains displays primarily focused on interpreting regional vertebrate palaeontology including material from B.C.’s two dinosaur excavations. There are also displays on dinosaur and other vertebrate tracks and traces which make up the vast majority of the terrestrial vertebrate record of western Canada. One of British Columbia’s best-kept secrets is the massive fossil record of Triassic marine fish and reptiles from this region. Our volunteers and scientists have collaborated to bring together an impressive and rapidly growing collection of specimens for ongoing scientific research and public interpretation here in the gallery.
Our recently expanded Dinosaur Discovery Gallery contains several new and enhanced palaeontology exhibits including a full-scale re-creation of a 100 million-year-old dinosaur track environment. An interactive theatre provides several presentation options for visitors to view and learn about the pre-history of the Peace Region of British Columbia.

Exploring Valemount Area
Spent 2 weeks driving around camping, fishing and exploring.
The Shipyard & Titanic - Tumbler Ridge, BC - Snowshoe
Fun snowshoe on the last day of March, 2018 during Easter long weekend. Lots of fresh snow in the last 2 weeks allowed for an amazing snowshoe to the Shipyard & Titanic southeast of Tumbler Ridge, British Columbia.
Our snowshoe started on the Core Lodge Road due to excessive snow on the road that works its way up the south side of Babcock Mountain. There were snowmobile tracks all the way up the 3.75 km to the start of the actual trailhead. From here, we broke new snowshoe tracks up along Armada and Chockstone Ridge, and then onwards to the top of the Bismarck, before coming back down and finally up the Titanic Rock, before descending back to our vehicle.
