Henry Lawson Bourke Cemetery Sunset
This was the 'sad Australian sunset' at Bourke cemetery on the eve of our re-enactment of Henry Lawson's famous walk from Bourke to Hungerford. The cemetery was referred to in Lawson's short story 'The Union Buries Its Dead.' Lawson made reference to the sad Australian sunset in both this short story and in a poem 'Trooper Campbell.'

Birdsville Cemetery Queensland Australia
Birdsville Cemetery Queensland Australia
Despite visiting far-flung places, and travelling long distances, we still make time to check out memorials and graves in some remote communities.
Birdsville has a small cemetery which was in need of much TLC when we visited. There are stones for early European settlers as well as some memorials to members of the local Aboriginal community. I am not sure of the cultural correctness of publishing these transcriptions and our local Aboriginal Cultural Centre and Keeping Place was unable to advise me. If you think they should be removed then please let me know.
Akawilyika Maude Naylon, Born Simpson Desert 1887, died 1980, Fluent in four Aboriginal languages.

BURKE AND WILLS SPIRIT BOX
Again while at the Melbourne General Cemetery I had stopped by the resting place of ill-fated explorers Burke and Wills.
As a Melbournian I have walked past statues of these guys countless times in the city with only knowing a minimal amount of their adventure.
From researching their journey I came to the understanding that Robert O'Hara Burke was a bit of a pighead who pushed his men (and pack animals) to the limits while ignoring help from indigenous tribes along the way (I mean, who fires shots at them that scares them off leaving them to fend for themselves?) I shake my head at his name cuz so many lost their lives needlessly.
Hope you enjoy ????☠????☠????

Michael Cathcart - Starvation in a Land of Plenty (NLA)
Wills' Diary of the fateful Burke and Wills Expedition ... When Robert O'Hara Burke and William John Wills set out on their fateful journey with the Victorian Exploring Expedition, Wills brought with him a diary in which to record his experiences. His entries would go on to help historians understand the circumstances that led to the tragic end of the expedition. Today, the diary is held by the National Library of Australia and forms the foundation of Starvation in a Land of Plenty It is the story of the brief life and tragic death of a clever and brave young man named William Wills. He was a young scientist who joined an ambitious expedition to cross Australia in 1860 under the leadership of Robert O'Hara Burke. But the expedition was fatally misconceived. Burke and Wills ended up dying of starvation in the bountiful lands of the Yandruwandha people. The diary which Wills kept in the final weeks of his life is the inspiration for this book. It shows that the Yandruwandha were willing to provide the lost men with sanctuary and food. Wills was only too willing to open himself to their humanity. But Burke -- ever the Imperial gentleman -- was not prepared to live like a native. And in the end, Wills chose loyalty to his commander over friendship with the local people. It was an act of loyalty which cost him his life. Starvation in a Land of Plenty was commissioned by the National Library of Australia. It is based on extensive research from records held by the Library and on the advice of Aaron Peterson, a descendent of the Yandruwandha clan who cared for Burke, Wills and their companion, John King.
