Eastern State Penitentiary 4K UHD Philadelphia, Pennsylvania ESP
The Eastern State Penitentiary, also known as ESP, is a former American prison in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.[5] It is located at 2027 Fairmount Avenue between Corinthian Avenue and North 22nd Street in the Fairmount section of the city, and was operational from 1829 until 1971.
The penitentiary refined the revolutionary system of separate incarceration first pioneered at the Walnut Street Jail which emphasized principles of reform rather than punishment.[6]
Notorious criminals such as Al Capone and bank robber Willie Sutton were held inside its innovative wagon wheel design. James Bruno (Big Joe) and several male relatives were incarcerated here between 1936 and 1948 for the alleged murders in the Kelayres massacre of 1934, before they were pardoned.[7] At its completion, the building was the largest and most expensive public structure ever erected in the United States,[8] and quickly became a model for more than 300 prisons worldwide.
The prison is currently a U.S. National Historic Landmark,[4] which is open to the public as a museum for tours seven days a week, twelve months a year, 10 am to 5 pm.
Designed by John Haviland and opened on October 25, 1829, Eastern State is considered to be the world's first true penitentiary. Eastern State's revolutionary system of incarceration, dubbed the Pennsylvania system or separate system, encouraged separate confinement (the warden was legally required to visit every inmate every day, and the overseers were mandated to see each inmate three times a day) as a form of rehabilitation.
The Pennsylvania System was opposed contemporaneously by the Auburn system (also known as the New York system), which held that prisoners should be forced to work together in silence, and could be subjected to physical punishment (Sing Sing prison was an example of the Auburn system). Although the Auburn system was favored in the United States, Eastern State's radial floor plan and system of solitary confinement was the model for over 300 prisons worldwide.[citation needed]
Originally, inmates were housed in cells that could only be accessed by entering through a small exercise yard attached to the back of the prison; only a small portal, just large enough to pass meals, opened onto the cell blocks. This design proved impractical, and in the middle of construction, cells were constructed that allowed prisoners to enter and leave the cell blocks through metal doors that were covered by a heavy wooden door to filter out noise. The halls were designed to have the feel of a church.[9]
Some believe that the doors were small so prisoners would have a harder time getting out, minimizing an attack on a security guard. Others have explained the small doors forced the prisoners to bow while entering their cell. This design is related to penance and ties to the religious inspiration of the prison. The cells were made of concrete with a single glass skylight, representing the Eye of God, suggesting to the prisoners that God was always watching them.[9]
Outside the cell was an individual area for exercise, enclosed by high walls so prisoners could not communicate. Exercise time for each prisoner was synchronized so no two prisoners next to each other would be out at the same time. Prisoners were allowed to garden and even keep pets in their exercise yards. When a prisoner left his cell, an accompanying guard would wrap a hood over his head to prevent him from being recognized by other prisoners.[9]
Cell accommodations were advanced for their time, including a faucet with running water over a flush toilet, as well as curved pipes along part of one wall which served as central heating during the winter months where hot water would be run through the pipes to keep the cells reasonably heated. Toilets were remotely flushed twice a week by the guards of the cellblock.

Belmont Plateau Part 1 of a Couple - Philadelphia, PA
Belmont Plateau is one of Philly's two crown jewels of urban mountain biking (along with the Wissahickon Valley trails). Belmont is close to 15 miles of great single track that's only 3 miles from the Rocky steps, allowing riders to get there easily from center city along the beautiful Schuylkill River Trail. Whereas the Wiss is rocky, super fast and has a decent amount of elevation change, Belmont is (mostly) relatively flat, tight & twisty old school singletrack with tons of log overs. In addition to the old school stuff, there have been some great new trails built over the last few years that have a more modern, progressive flow to them and they mix in nicely with the older stuff. It's helpful to go with someone that knows the trails (and can call out some of the difficult maneuvers & punchy climbs you'll encounter), but the trails are fairly easy to navigate and they all eventually meet up with a network of gravel roads, making it easy to find your way back. Added bonus is that trail network meets up with the Philly Pumptrack which has a beginner and advanced pump tracks and jump lines so you can rip the trails and the track on the same ride!
This video is missing some of the great trails and more technical stuff as my ride was cut short by a bit of a mechanical so I'll be posting another one soon with the rest of the goods.
Between the Wiss & Belmont, Philly has an amazing amount of good mountain biking that can be accessed right from the downtown city center and I have yet to hear of another major American city that has that situation. If you're gonna be coming to the area, I highly recommend bringing your bike or hitting up one of the many great area shops that offer rentals and demos.

One of the two story cell blocks in Eastern State Penitentiary
The original design of the building was for seven one-story cell blocks, but by the time cell block three was completed, the prison was already over capacity. All subsequent cell blocks had two floors. Toward the end, cell blocks 14 and 15 were hastily built due to overcrowding. They were built and designed by prisoners. Cell block 15 was for the worst behaved prisoners, and the guards were gated off from there entirely.
Inmates were punished with the individual-treatment system. At the time this form of punishment was thought to be most effective. They would be separated from others.
It was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1965.
The prison was closed in 1971. Many prisoners and guards were transferred to Graterford Prison, about 31 miles (50 km) northwest of Eastern State. The City of Philadelphia purchased the property with the intention of redeveloping it. The site had several proposals, including a mall and a luxury apartment complex surrounded by the old prison walls
During the abandoned era (from closing until the late 80s) a forest grew in the cell blocks and outside within the walls. The prison also became home to many stray cats.

Stoneleigh: America’s Newest Public Garden, PLUS an in-depth chat with Ethan Kauffman about...
Ethan Kauffman (pronounced cough-man) is on the show today. Ethan’s the director at Stoneleigh - America's newest public garden - and we’re talking all about this exciting addition to our nation's collection of public gardens. Plus I got the chance to talk plants with Ethan (that was exciting!) and not surprisingly, I learned a ton from him - which means, hopefully, you will, too. You’re going to love hearing his thoughts on favorite plants, using natives, and his choices for perennials that shine in different seasons. And all it can be found on the grounds of Stoneleigh. By way of background: for over 80 years,Stoneleigh was the home of the Haas family. But, in 2016, they generously donated the property to Natural Lands for preservation and public enjoyment. Located next to Villanova University,Stoneleigh features some incredible and distinguished trees, gorgeous pathways, and verdant gardens. What’s more, it has been developed in the shadows of a some pretty esteemed landscape architects over the past century—including Charles H. Miller (who trained at Kew), George Pentecost Jr. (son of missionary and evangelist Reverand George Fredreick Pentecost and a founding member of the ASLA -The American Society of Landscape Architects), Ferruccio Vitale (who created the country-estate landscape of Skylands and played an integral role for the magnificent Longwood Gardens in Pennsylvania. According to author Terry Schnadelbach who wrote, Ferruccio Vitale: Landscape Architect of the Country Place Era, he is America's forgotten landscape architect”.) and finally the Olmsted Brothers, the sons of Frederick Law Olmsted - who is regarded as the father of American landscape architecture. Now, a main priority at Stoneleigh is to showcase the beauty of native plants in a garden setting, something entomologist Doug Tallemy is a huge advocate for (and as luck would have it, he’s on the board of directors at Natural Lands - so his input is readily accessible). As a result, Stoneleigh is an impressive role model for home gardeners; showing how a native garden can be created to stunning effect! Stoneleigh’s opening weekend is this weekend, Mother’s Day weekend, May 12 and 13, 2018. But if you can’t make it; never fear. This garden will be free of charge and open to the public year round. It’s truly a special place! Stoneleigh: America’s Newest Public Garden, PLUS an in-depth chat with Ethan Kauffman about his vision and the plants he loves most in the garden - that's the topic of today’s show and it’s coming up after: An update on the Listener Community for the show and this week's Garden News Roundup. - - - - - - After nearly two years of planning and preparations, Stoneleigh: a natural garden, is about to open to the public and it is a very exciting addition to our country’s public spaces. Stoneleigh has a rich and fascinating history. One of the first mentions of Stoneleigh appears in the Memorial History of the City of Philadelphia. Edmund Smith, a son of Philadelphia, had married socialite Arabella Barnes and he had worked his entire life (from the age of 18) at the Pennsylvania Railroad - ultimately becoming Treasurer and then Vice President. In 1877, when he was 48 years old, Edmund purchased 65 acres of land in Villanova and built a residence on Spring Mill Road. On July 31, 1895, at the age of 66, Edmund passed away while on a business trip in New York. It was reported that, “he was buried at Villanova, where he had a suburban residence, “Stoneleigh”. Stoneleigh was designed by the renowned architecture firm Wilson Brothers & Company and constructed between 1877 and 1890 in the Gothic style. Among many Wilson Brothers surviving buildings are the main building of Drexel University and and the Reading Terminal in Philadelphia. Before he died, Edmund and his wife Arabella, hired the well known English landscape gardener Charles H. Miller. Trained at Kew Gardens, Miller later served as chief gardener for Fairmount Park and was best known for his “Sunken Gardens”. At the start of the 20th century, Samuel Bodine acquired the property. At the time, Bodine was President of United Gas Improvement Company (UGI). At it’s peak, UGI was the second largest public utility holding company in the United States. In addition to completely razing the original home and creating the magnificent Tudor Revival home that exists today, Bodine hired the newly formed New York landscape architecture firm of Pentecost and Vitale to increase the formality of the gardens in the heavily ornamented and lavish...

Impeachment trial of President Trump | Jan. 24, 2020 (FULL LIVE STREAM)
Opening arguments in President Trump’s impeachment trial began on Jan. 22 in the Senate. House managers, led by Rep. Adam B. Schiff (D-Calif.), will present three days of opening arguments. Then, senators will have 16 hours to ask questions in writing. Chief Justice John G. Roberts Jr. will read the questions out loud, and the appropriate side — defense or prosecution — can answer them.
President Trump was impeached by the House of Representatives in December for abuse of power and obstruction of Congress. Impeachment does not mean that the president has been removed from office. In the next phase, the Senate must hold a trial to make that determination. A Senate impeachment trial has happened only two other times in American history and once in the modern era. At the center of the Democrats’ case is that Trump sought to withhold military assistance and an Oval Office meeting until Ukraine announced investigations into former vice president Joe Biden and his son.
