A Conversation With The Peabody Essex Museum’s New Director – Open Studio with Jared Bowen
Jared has a conversation with the Peabody Essex Museum’s new Director & CEO, Brian Kennedy.
IN THE METROPOLITAN SHADOW: BOWEN ISLAND - JACK LITTLE
SFU Professor Emeritus Jack Little describes the history of Bowen Island. Part of the traditional territory of the Squamish people, Bowen is the Gulf Island nearest Vancouver. In the early twentieth century some of Vancouver’s wealthiest families established summer retreats on the island; and for over half a century each summer weekend hundreds of families boarded steamships in Coal Harbour for day trips to the picnic grounds of Snug Cove. In the 1950s a car ferry introduced commuters to Bowen, making city ties tighter than ever, but in 1969 a developer’s plan to convert the Snug Cove area into a densely settled suburb opened a protracted debate that revealed conflicting visions of the island’s future. The tension between preserving Bowen Island as a retreat from the city and giving in to metropolitan development pressures persists to the present day.
Australian Railway Museums Tour
Filmed November 2016 a number of Railway Museums was part of an Australian Tour itinerary. Six museums in total featuring a variety of gauges from two foot upwards. We start with two operated by the Australian Railway Historical Society. North Williamstown, near Melbourne and the one now temporarily closed at Canberra. The Works, at Ipswich, and Nambour Heritage Museum which are both in Queensland. Goulburn Roundhouse and Train Works at Thirlmere, near Sydney, are two from the state of New South Wales.
In all the museums there are examples of U.K. built steam plus plenty Australian built and a few supplied by American companies.

The Salonika Campaign: archaeology in the trenches
5 October 2015 is the centenary of the start of the First World War’s Salonika Campaign, when a large Allied army arrived at the port of Thessaloniki (Salonika) in northern Greece.
This programme introduces both the Salonika Campaign and the British Salonika Force archaeological collection at the British Museum. The collection was formed as a result of trench digging and other military activity in Macedonia. The initial offensive in autumn 1915 failed and so British and French forces dug themselves into the rich archaeological landscape around Thessaloniki.
Various archaeological finds were gathered by both the British and French armies in temporary museums in Thessaloniki and after the end of the war they were despatched, with the agreement of the Greek government, to London and Paris. Significant finds, such as the warrior’s grave on display in the British Museum, are described as well as the important personalities involved in the formation of the collection.
Archaeologists such as Professor Ernest Gardner, who had studied in Greece before the First World War, served in the army in intelligence roles but also found time to pursue their archaeological interests.
How Dartmouth College's Hood Museum is telling a new 'story of art'
Over the past three years, the Hood Museum of Art at Dartmouth College has undergone a major renovation -- and not just to the building itself. Director John Stomberg and Deputy Director Juliette Bianco reimagined everything about the museum, including the artworks it contains and the way it interprets them. Special correspondent Jared Bowen reports on Hood’s freedom to experiment with art.

The Old Museum Building, Brisbane Australia
The Old Museum was originally called the Exhibition Building and Concert Hall. It was built in 1891 for the Queensland National Agricultural and Industrial Association after Brisbane's first exhibition building, which had occupied the land, was destroyed by fire on 13 June 1888. At the time of the fire the building was being used as a skating rink.[1]
The land had been used by the Queensland Acclimatisation Society from 1863-1875.
The new exhibition building was designed by the architect George Henry Male Addison (1857–1922). The style of the building may best be described as progressive eclecticism. It is entered in the Queensland Heritage Register.
Jerusalem is My Guardian
The World Jewish Congress (WJC) main conference took place in Jerusalem between August 31-September 1. Around 200 representatives from around the world gathered in Jerusalem to discuss and formulate policy on matters of publicity and propaganda regarding Israel.
In addition to Spain's former Prime Minister, Mr. Jose Maria Aznar, the conference was also attended by Nobel Laureate, journalist, and author, Mr. Elie Wiesel, MK Shai Hermesh, and the Mayor of Jerusalem, Mr. Nir Barkat.
The congress chairman presented Mr. Wiesel with the Guardian of Jerusalem award in recognition for his contributions to Jewish literature and his exploits around the world in support of Israel. Elie Wiesel, born in Romania, survived the atrocities of the Holocaust and the Auschwitz death camp.

1907 Campbell Oil Engine
This is our 1907 Campbell Crude Oil engine. It is the oldest engine in the Society's collection. Serial # 9083, Bore 5 1/2 in., Stroke 11 in. Ignition is by hot tube/bulb (blowlamp start) and it is capable of running on almost any liquid fuel oil. You may notice a loud knocking at times which we believe is a pre-ignition knock as it speeds up, but we intend to investigate further to make sure there are no mechanical problems with the engine.

The Long-Forgotten World War II Prisoner of War Camps in Korea
As an (unwilling) part of the Japanese Empire, Korea was involved in World War Two. We have all heard of the conscripts, the forced labor, and the comfort women. However, fighting did not actually occur on Korean soil. Soviet forces arrived in Korea from Manchuria in mid to late August, and US troops made landfall in Incheon on September 8 1945 to receive the Japanese surrender and disarm and demobilize Japan's military.
One aspect of Korean history during that period that has been forgotten -- seemingly by all sides -- is the approximately 1,500 Allied Prisoners of War who were held in Korea from September 1942, only a couple of months after the last non-Axis foreign civilians had been forcibly deported from Korea by ship. The first Allies to be imprisoned here were British and Australian troops from the fall of Singapore. They were joined towards the end of the war by American soldiers captured in the Philippines, after they were initially held in the notorious hell ships, as well as in Japan. In all, three camps were operated, run by Japanese officers and staffed by Korean conscripts and civilians. A few POWs died, but most were rescued and brought home in September 1945.
Jacco Zwetsloot will give a presentation about these camps and how their locations were recently rediscovered by himself and Matthew Van Volkenburg.
Jacco Zwetsloot describes himself as a Jacco of all trades, master of some. In the past year he has worked as a business English teacher, translator, interpreter, simulation facilitator, corporate trainer, documentary cameraman and cataloger, cultural lecturer, souvenir evaluator, radio commentator, magazine writer, voice actor, researcher, copy editor and tour guide. He is currently seeking a publisher interested in releasing translations of several North Korean comic books. He has a Bachelor of Arts (First Class Honours) in Korean Studies from Monash University, and has lived in South Korea for over 12 years.

CRHnews - Top Marx for Wendy Clark at Marconi's world first wireless factory
Russophile Wendy Clark scored top Marx checking out the Birthplace of Wireless clutching her fab-erge copy of a biography on the life of influential Marconi backer Sir William Preece.
Wendy was attending a unique Marconi Exhibition is taking place at the original Marconi Wireless and Telegraphy works in Hall Street Chelmsford, the world's first wireless factory which Marconi established in 1898.
A full scale replica of the Titanic's wireless room takes pride of place at Hall Street whose factory workers saved the lives of Titanic/Lusitania survivors and countless thousands.
The worlds first Wireless and Telegraphy factory at Marconi's Hall Street works, hailed as the ‘birthplace of radio' , is featuring a unique exhibition which highlights the part played by these unsung heroes.
There are photographs of women, redundant silk weavers, whose nimble fingers spun the copper wires and the tough guys who sweated in the noisy machine shop.
Without the SOS equipment they made, 1.500 from the Titanic and Lusitania disasters would have perished, not to mention countless other shipwrecked souls who survived other sinkings.
Although MSW is staging an exhibition, its aim has never been to open a Marconi Museum, but to promote the setting up of STEM (Science Technology Engineering Maths) Clubs in the Birthplace of Radio to encourage young people to become future Marconi's and even rocket scientists!
To celebrate the history and legacy of Marconi and the Marconi Company in Chelmsford, this commemorative event is hosted between Marc h and May 2016 in the Grade II listed building prior to its conversion into residential and commercial units.
This Exhibition has been organised by the Marconi Heritage Group in affiliation with the Chelmsford Civic Society, at the request of the developers MAC Design and Build Ltd to allow the public access to the significant industrial heritage of the building.
Archival material from a variety of sources will be showcased, in many cases for the first time. Contributors include The International Marconi Museum in Bologna, The Museum of the History of Science, Oxford, the Essex Record Office, Chelmsford Museums and several private collections.
Local families with their own small collections of Marconi-related memorabilia have also contributed.
This is a major opportunity to share the Marconi legacy, and showcase the evidence for the claim of Chelmsford City's entry signs: Birthplace of Radio.
Chelmsford Science and Engineering Society is proud to support Marconi Science WorX (MSW) and Chelmsford Civic Society in collaboration with BBC Essex which exists thanks to the great man's pioneering work at Hall Street.
Although they are staging the exhibition, MSW's main aim is not to open another Marconi Museum, but promote after-school STEM clubs to encourage young people maybe to become rocket scientists or the next Marconi.
A series of talks have also been organised (pre-booking is required).
Please see their events pages for individual talks and activities (more to come!):
