QC to honor fallen scouts

Fifty-six years ago, an entire delegation of Filipino boy scouts died in a plane crash on their way to represent the country in the 11th World Jamboree in Marathon, Greece. To commemorate this tragic but heroic event, a monument was built in Quezon City. Would the residents of Quezon City remember this moment in history?

For the first time, the Ateneo Grade School Boy Scouting Movement participated in the 53rd Year Anniversary Scout Memorial Camp held at Camp Gen. Emilio Aguinaldo High School last July 29-31, 2016. The scouts learned new skills and were able to interact with fellow boy scouts and senior scouts of District 3. The theme of the camp is Growth and Stability. The Scout's Quest included the following activities: Two-Turks Woogle Making, Knots-for-a-Cause, Singing Scouting Songs and Team Building Games.

The AGS contingent who joined pledged to be more active in the future camps and jamborees because the scouts experienced a whole new world of Scouting outside the campus. They were also more inspired because they met a schoolmate from AGS, Eagle Scout Enrico Patulan, who is currently the Vice President of the Eagle Scout Organization of Quezon City.

SUMMARY
=======
The 11th World Scout Jamboree Memorial Rotonda, also known as the Boy Scout Circle, is a roundabout in Quezon City, Metro Manila, the Philippines. Located at the intersection between Timog and Tomas Morato Avenues, it serves as the boundary between Barangays South Triangle, Laging Handa and Sacred Heart.
A monument stands in the middle of the roundabout which commemorates the members of the ill-fated Philippine contingent to the 11th World Scout Jamboree that was among the casualties of the United Arab Airlines Flight 869 crash of 1963. The monument consists of a circular pedestal with bronze statues positioned around the structure, in the likenesses of the 24 members of the Philippine delegation (22 Boy Scouts, 2 veteran Scouters, and 2 chaperons). In 2007, the Quezon City government performed a ₱20 million renovation on the monument that included the addition of an obelisk on top of the structure honoring Tomás Morató, the first mayor of Quezon City and the one after whom Tomas Morato Avenue is named.

Chinese Cemetary Santa Cruz Manila by HourPhilippines.com
Chinese Cemetary Santa Cruz Manila. The Manila Chinese Cemetery (華僑義山) is the second oldest cemetery in Manila after La Loma Cemetery and was designated as the resting place for the Chinese citizens who were denied burial in Catholic cemeteries during the Spanish colonial period. The cemetery was witness to many executions during World War II. Among them were Girl Scouts organizer Josefa Llanes Escoda, Filipino Brigadier General and hero during World War II and Boy Scouts of the Philippines charter member Vicente Lim, literary geniuses Rafael Roces and Manuel Arguilla, star athlete-turned-guerrilla spy Virgilio Lobregat, and Chinese Consul General Yang Guangsheng. Apolinario Mabini was also buried in the cemetery before his remains were transferred to Batangas.
Notable Landmarks are:
Chong Hock Tong Temple
Built in the 1850s, this is the oldest Chinese temple in Manila. Though not as elaborate, the architecture is still reminiscent of those in Fujian province as well as those in Singapore and Malaysia with their colorful friezes and uniquely upturned eaves.
Liat See Tong (Martyrs Hall)
Built in the early 1950s in honor of the Chinese community leaders who were executed by the Japanese during World War II. Japan invaded the country in 1941 and one of the first things they did was to round up prominent Chinese community leaders and executed them. Having been enemies even before World War II commenced, the Japanese were wary of the trouble the Chinese community would cause on the plans when they invaded the Philippines.
Dy Hoc Khe

Carlos Palanca (Tan Quien Sien) Memorial
A memorial to Don Carlos Palanca (Tan Quien Sien), illustrious Chinese Filipino leader and businessman during the 19th century. It was through his efforts the cemetery was built. During the Spanish colonial period, non-Catholics weren't allowed to be buried in the city cemeteries. Hence the need for the non-Christian Chinese to have their own cemetery.
Ruby Tower Memorial
Built in 1974, the Ruby Tower Memorial is dedicated to the Chinese-Filipinos who perished during the deadly August 2, 1968 earthquake that hit Manila. Two hundred and sixty people died during the collapse of the 6-story Ruby Tower, located near the corner of Teodora Alonzo and Doroteo Jose streets in Santa Cruz, Manila. The entire building, save for a portion of the first and second floors at its northern end, was destroyed. Allegations of poor design and construction, as well as use of low-quality building materials, arose.
The memorial is located just in the rear of the famous Lee See Tong Martyr's Hall inside the Manila Chinese Cemetery
