Visiting 2 Unesco World Heritage Sites in one travel vlog didn't seem like it would be possible! (but it is) We'd heard so much about both Rila Monastery & Boyana Church and getting to them both from Sofia, but the public transport in Bulgaria was going to prove a little tricky.
Luckily we found Traventuria Tours, who offer one tour in on the same day of travel. First stop is Boyana Church, only 30 minutes drive from Sofia center. Then off into the Rila Mountains to visit the Rila Monastery - which is possibly one of the most amazing UNESCO sites we've seen anywhere in the world. As far as tours from Sofia are concerned, this tour to Rila Monastery & Boyana Church in the same day was an absolute winner and saved us hours of research. Monasterio de Rila will always hold a special place in our travel memories, hopefully that comes across in the vlog.

Sofia is the capital of Bulgaria and is located in the Western part of Bulgaria. It’s a largely modern and youthful city.
You can go to the ski resort where you can find two ski centers on Mount Vitosha to accommodate the visitors: they are called Aleko and Konyarnika.
Another highlight are the many museums you can find in Sofia, such as The Polytechnical Museum, The Museum of Anthropology and The Sports Museum.
Furthermore there are lots of restaurants, galleries and entertainment venues.
You can take a walk to Borisova Gradina. It’s the most attractive park with its statues and flower beds, you can take a breathe and relax after a long day. The Eastern end of the park is dominated by a gigantic communist monument built in 1959.
You can also go to Sofia Zoological Garden in the Southern part of the city. If you have the time, you can go to Borivoj Park which is in the center of the city and South Park which is the National Palace of Culture.
You can see the Sveta Sofia Church which is the capital’s oldest and gave the name at the city. You can see also Aleksander Nevski Church, it’s massive, awe-inspiring and Vitosha Mountain.
And finally you should visit the Parliament, the National Opera and Ballet, the National Theater and the Statue of Saint Sofia which reaches a height of 21 m.

Day Tours From Sofia Bulgaria - Boyana Church
When it comes to Day Tours from Sofia Bulgaria - Boyana Church is not to be missed. Boyana Church is a UNESCO World Heritage church, and best of all it's on the outskirts of the capital city of Bulgaria, Sofia.
The church is listed as UNESCO World Heritage because of the importance of the medieval paintings inside the church. There are a series of fresco paintings adorning the walls and roof of the church, and they are very well preserved.
To see these medieval paintings you must be on an organized tour. Tours are a maximum of 8 people due to the small interior of the church, and duration is a maximum of 10 minutes.
We booked a tour using GetYourGuide.com, which went to 2 Bulgaria World Heritage sites in one day - Rila Monastery and Boyana Church. The tour through Boyana Church was organized as part of the tour package so it was easy for us.

Boyana Church Sofia
Located at the foot of Mt. Vitosha, Bojana Church is about 900 years old. The church houses the National Museum, which focuses on regional history, art and cultural artifacts.

The Boyana Church is a medieval Bulgarian Orthodox church situated in the Boyana quarter of the Bulgarian capital city of Sofia, . The east wing of the two-story church was originally constructed in the late 10th or early 11th century. Then the central wing was added in the 13th century under the Second Bulgarian Empire. The whole building was finished with a further expansion to the west in the middle of the 19th century. A total of 89 scenes with 240 human images are depicted on the walls of the church.The frescoes inside the church are very old and actually layered. Groups of up to 8 visitors are permitted to stay for 10 minutes only. We enjoyed our 10 minutes! The music we used for this video is Peace of Mind by Richard Schonherz and Peter Scott.

The Boyana Church (Bulgarian: Боянска църква, Boyanska tsarkva) is a medieval Bulgarian Orthodox church situated on the outskirts of Sofia, the capital of Bulgaria, in the Boyana quarter. The east wing of the two-storey church was originally constructed in the late 10th or early 11th century, then the central wing was added in the 13th century under the Second Bulgarian Empire, the whole building being finished with a further expansion to the west in the middle of the 19th century. The church owes its world fame mainly to its frescoes from 1259. They form a second layer over the paintings from earlier centuries and represent one of the most complete and well-preserved monuments of Eastern European mediaeval art. A total of 89 scenes with 240 human images are depicted on the walls of the church. The name of the painter is recently discovered during restoration. The inscription reads: zograph Vassilii from the village Subonosha, Sersko and his apprentice Dimitar.
Besides the first layer of 11th-12th century frescoes, of which only fragments are preserved, and the famous second layer of murals from 1259, the church also has a smaller number of later frescoes from the 14th and 16th-17th century, as well as from 1882.
The Boyana Church was built in three stages: in the late 10th and early 11th, the mid-13th, and the mid-19th centuries. The oldest section (the eastern church) is a small one-apse cross-vaulted church with inbuilt cruciform supports. It was built in the late 10th and early 11th century. The second section, which adjoins the eastern church, was commissioned by Sebastocrator Kaloyan and his wife Dessislava and in the mid-13th century. This building belongs to the two-floor tomb-church type. It consists of a ground-floor family sepulchre with a semi-cylindrical vault and two arcosolia on the north and south walls, and an upper-floor family chapel identical in design to the eastern church. The exterior is decorated with ceramic ornaments. The last section was built on donations from the local community in the mid-19th century.

At the beginning of the Communist regime the church was somewhat forgotten. But towards the end of it there was a minister of culture named Ludmila Zhivkova who sold the church to the synod. The synod turned it into a museum. And later on the church was declared a world heritage site by UNESCO.

The restoration is finished. What we have to keep doing in the future is to control external factors such as temperature, and humidity, as well as the preservation of this treasure.

This part of the church was partially destroyed during the enlargement of the church in the 19th century. And the paintings were lost. But from the 12th until the 18th the restorers have tried to put together what could be saved.

In the foothills of Mount Vitosha in the suburbs of the Bulgarian capital Sofia lies Boyana Church.
The historical building is a UNESCO world heritage site because of its unique series of frescoes, which are said to be some of the most significant contributions to European medieval art.
STORYLINE:
When it comes to medieval churches and monasteries Bulgaria has few rivals.
For centuries its mountainous territory has been the ideal hideout location for Christian Orthodox monks and priests.
At the turn of the 10th century the city of Sredets (now Sofia) was surrounded by 35 fortresses that protected the city.
One of them was Boyana, at the foothills of Mount Vitosha.
The church is the only surviving building from the old fortress.
The oldest part of the church dates back to the late 10th and early 11th centuries.
It was designed following the typical Greek cross configuration with a small apse at the end crossed by two minor wings.
The 900-year-old church is said to be the most dazzling wholly preserved artistic work from the Bulgarian Turnovo medieval School of painting.
In the mid 13th century the church was enlarged under the patronage of a local governor named Sebastocrator Kaloyan and his wife Dessislava.
The last addition to the church was finally completed in the mid 19th century and today serves as the entrance and hall to the main nave.
Tania Lazova is the curator at Boyana.
