The Hiding Magpies @ Boyce's Barrel Colne 12/01/19
The Hiding Magpies @ Boyce’s Barrel, Colne
Four brilliant numbers from one of the best bands I’ve had the pleasure to catch in a long while, and what a pleasure it was to edit with the video footage from my new Sony Handycam. I was hoping that it would catch the clean clear sounds of the band and I’m not disappointed, not perfect but better than anything I’ve used in the past.
I’m getting a Sony stereo external mic soon and I would love to catch The Hiding Magpies again and get some proper stereo separation of their brilliant original numbers.
Ok, so what about Boyce’s Barrel, well I can tell you good and proper, It’s all about the beer, cask beer. Yes it’s a micro pub a trend that is growing all around the country thanks to some really good local micro breweries pumping out some quality beer.
As far as I could see, they host 6 differing cask ales and although I’m a lager drinker (sacrilege in here I know but Bass Charringtons ruined it for me as a kid with their pathetic Brew Ten Keg replacing the fine Burnley Massey ales.) I did try one of their selection which I thoroughly enjoyed.
Realising that they host music events, yes I’ve been checking the place out on facebook, what a cracking opportunity it was for myself to catch the Magpies there. Yes it was a bit of a squeeze but that made it all the more enjoyable. The place was packed and the staff were very efficient and friendly.
The room has loads of charm and although only small, it’s a bit like a Tardis, it’s as wide as you can see on the video but a reasonable length with tables and chairs to both sides. The micro bar is just big enough to hold 6 pumps and a place to put the freshly pulled pleasures.
The place is situated near the top of New Market St at the back of the Town Hall which still has a traditional chiming town hall clock, chiming 10pm just as I was leaving Boyce’s reminding me I was late for my next appointment, but it was well worth it and I’ll definitely be back, it’s a great little venue, I might even convert back to cask, it’s tempting.

The Hiding Magpies – To Feel Your Love @ Boyce’s Barrel Colne
On a damp dreary night in Colne what better that to walk into a warm welcoming micro pub that has been making a lot of people very happy in the town of the blues. As usual I’ve got my timing all wrong and walk in to catch the last seconds of the first set.
The Hiding Magpies are playing in their hometown at ‘Boyce’s Barrel’ which has become a great intimate venue for live music, as well as being a great watering hole for traditional real ale fanatics. The band are playing their debut album along with material from their upcoming second album. It’s a bit of a squeeze but what better than to get that real close up feel of the band as I have done with this footage covering ‘To Feel Your Love’ the last song on their debut album.
In their word - The Hiding Magpies are an Americana, Rock'N'Roll, Country band, from the UK. Their debut album ‘The Hiding Magpies’ covers all aspects of Love, Loss & Heartache. With a slight nod to many American songwriters. The Hiding Magpies are destined to be one of the Best Americana/Rock ‘N’ Roll groups of our time.
I caught all the bands second set which has many differing genres and influences and I was totally blown away with their quality original numbers, so much so I bought the album. This song has a great build up and crescendo, watch it to the end and you’ll see what I mean, absolutely brilliant.
Formed by (band leader) Jake Dixon, The Hiding Magpies had been an idea of his for quite some time. With a love for Americana & Country music, the band have styled their songwriting on these particular genre's, with influences from artists' such as Bob Dylan, The Byrds, The Band & Tom Petty trying to bring a taste of the old into the new.
I really can confirm the freshness of the material and am looking forward to catching them again very soon for their full performance, and if you find them playing local I’d advise you to do the same, I can see The Hiding Magpies making it big, they already have a mini tour set up in March in Leeds, Doncaster, Newark and Darwen. Check out their facebook page for more details. Definitely recommended.

ADMT
ADMT is a 24 year old Pop-R&B artist from Doncaster, UK. The energetic artist began his musical upbringing as a drummer, playing in bands from the age of 14 across the North of England.
From residencies in a function band in Butlins Minehead, to being a session drummer for numerous bands, ADMT was never content just being the guy sat at the back of the stage.
The contrast of ADMT’s double life is a staggering one, having spent his early 20’s juggling time between working in a glass bottle factory, fish mongering in Doncaster Market and touring as a respected session drummer.

The Bass Brewery was founded in 1777 by William Bass in Burton upon Trent, England. The main brand was Bass Pale Ale, once the highest selling beer in the UK. Bass became one of the top breweries in the UK, its pale ale was exported throughout the British Empire, the company's distinctive red triangle becoming the UK's first registered trademark.
Bass took control of a number of other large breweries in the early 20th century, and in the 1960s merged with Charrington United Breweries to become the largest UK brewing company, Bass Charrington. The brewing operations of the company were bought by Interbrew (now Anheuser-Busch InBev) in 2000, while the retail side (hotel and pub holdings) were renamed Six Continents plc. The UK government's Competition Commission was concerned about the monopoly implications arising from the deal, and instructed Interbrew to dispose of the brewery and certain brands (Carling and Worthington ) to Coors (now Molson Coors Brewing Company), but allowed Interbrew to retain the rights to the Bass Pale Ale brand. In 2010, it was widely reported that AB-InBev are attempting to sell the rights to the Bass brand in the UK for around £10-15 million.
Draught Bass (4.4% ABV) has been brewed under contract in Burton by Marston's for AB-InBev since 2005. Bottled and keg versions (5.1% ABV) are brewed at AB-InBev's own brewery in Samlesbury for export. Bass Ale is a top ten premium canned ale in the UK, with 16,080 hectolitres sold in 2010.
Prior to establishing a brewery, William Bass transported ale for brewer Benjamin Printon. Bass sold this carrier business to the Pickford family, using the funds to establish Bass & Co Brewery in 1777 as one of the first breweries in Burton upon Trent.
Early in the company's history, Bass was exporting bottled beer around the world, serving the Baltic region through the port of Hull. Growing demand led his son Michael Thomas Bass (senior), to build a second brewery in Burton upon Trent in 1799 in partnership with John Ratcliff. The water produced from local boreholes became popular with brewers, with 30 operating there by the mid-19th century. HIs son, Michael Thomas Bass, succeeded on his father's death in 1827, renewed the Ratcliff partnership, brought in John Gretton, and created 'Bass, Ratcliff and Gretton'.
The opening of a railway through Burton in 1839 redoubled Burton's preeminence as a brewing town. In the mid-1870s, Bass, Ratcliff and Gretton accounted for one third of Burton's output. A strong export business allowed Bass to boast their product was available in every country in the globe. Following the death of the second Michael Bass in 1884, his son Michael Arthur Bass, later the 1st Baron Burton, took the reins. The brewer became a public limited company in 1888.
Both the second Michael Thomas Bass and his son Lord Burton were philanthropically inclined, making extensive charitable donations to the towns of Burton and Derby. Early in the 20th century, a declining market closed many Burton breweries, twenty in 1900 falling to eight in 1928. Bass took over Walkers in 1923, Worthington and Thomas Salt in 1927, and James Eadie in 1933.
Bass was one of the original London Stock Exchange FT 30 companies when the listing was established in 1935. Over the next half-century, Bass maintained its UK dominance through acquiring such brewers as Mitchells & Butlers (1961), Charringtons (1967), Bents-Gartsides (1967), John Joule & Sons (1968), William Stones Ltd (1968), and Grimsby's Hewitt Brothers Ltd (1969), being variously known as Bass, Mitchells and Butlers or Bass Charrington.
Following decades of closures and consolidation, Bass was left by the end of the 20th century with one of the two large remaining breweries in Burton. It also had substantial holdings in hotels, since sold to InterContinental Hotels Group (IHG). Mitchells and Butlers lives on as the assignee of the licensed retail outlet business which separated from the Six Continents plc company that succeeded Bass plc in 2003.
Bass plc's brewing business was bought by the Belgian brewer Interbrew (now InBev) in June 2000, its hotel and pub holdings absorbed and renamed Six Continents plc.
After the Competition Commission raised potential monopoly concerns, Interbrew disposed of Bass Brewers Limited's Carling and Worthington brands to Coors (now Molson Coors Brewing Company), but retained rights to Bass beer production.
