Boyle Abbey ~ County Roscommon, Ireland
An impressive and well preserved Cistercian Monastery which was founded in the 12th century under the patronage of the local ruling family, the MacDermotts. Though mutilated during the 17th and 18th centuries when it was used to accommodate a military garrison, Boyle Abbey nevertheless retains its ability to impress the visitor as one of the most formidable of the early Cistercian foundations in Ireland. A restored gatehouse of 16th/17th century houses an exhibition.

Thanks for checking out my photo montage.
I loved time spent at Boyle Abbey. Fascinating history, beautiful architecture. The photos are good, seeing it in person is better.
It was interesting to learn: the labor intensive way the structure was made, the routine of long ago and renovation efforts of today.
For me, the methods used to build Boyle Abbey lended so much beauty, life and character to it. I find the old, traditional style of building the stone walls have so much more energy and personality attached to it versus how we build them now.
During my time at Boyle Abbey, there were specific areas of the walls, rooms or courtyard, I found myself powerful drawn to. For those areas, I placed my hands on a spot on the wall or ran my hands along parts of the walls or just simply stood still in other areas within the walls. The vibrations of energy, of history long passed generations ago, can still be felt.
That particular day I was really drawn to the birds, too, and how they observed us, didn't want us to know where their nests were. After a while, I think they realized we weren't there to cause harm.
Boyle Abbey - fascinating, beautiful, historic Ireland. The surrounding cafés had welcoming atmospheres, too.
My amazing host brought to life the thoughts I'd had since I was knee high to a grasshopper. Ireland's countryside, its beauty, magic and history exceeded my every thought and expectation.
