US: Boys Town marks 100 years of ‘saving children, healing families’
America's most famous children's home, Boys Town, in the midwestern state of Nebraska, is preparing to celebrate its 100th anniversary next month.
Since Boys Town was founded in 1917, there have been huge changes in how the US cares for orphans and other at-risk children. Orphanages have largely been replaced by the foster care system
Al Jazeera's John Hendren travelled to Nebraska, to take a look at how a century of helping young people has evolved over time.

Big Picture: Boys Town, U.S.A. - National Archives and Records Administration - ARC Identifier 2569615 / Local Identifier 111-TV-346 - DVD Copied by Katie Filbert. THE BIG PICTURE visits Boys Town, U.S.A. for story of young soldiers -- The U.S. Army's weekly TV program, THE BIG PICTURE moves its cameras and microphones to Boys Town, Nebraska, just outside of Omaha, to bring viewers the story of how our Army made it possible for young men of draft-age to prepare for their military obligations. The TV program will originate direct from the unique Nebraska landmark, founded by the late Father Edward J. Flanagan, and will describe participation of the youngsters in the Army's Reserve Program. Youngsters at Boys Town have joined the 353rd MP Company, organized under the provisions of the Reserve Forces Act of 1955. Many of the boys signed up for the new military program, whereby they are on active duty for 6 months, and spend a total of 7 1/2 years in the Reserves. Features of the plan allow the youths to complete their educations at Boys Town High School before being called to 6 months active duty. The men are draft exempt by joining the Reserves. Viewers will accompany the special Boys Town Company, the 353rd, as it performs its annual two-week summer training program. This year, the Men of Boys Town traveled with the Army to Ft. Carson, Colorado, where they received basic field training in military subjects. Rev. Edmond Walsh, commenting on the unique relationship between the Army and Boys Town, says: We feel the military reserve program affords our boys an excellent opportunity to take on new responsibilities.
Boys Town
At the last minute before broadcast, the Discovery Channel pulled this documentary, Conspiracy of Silence, without explanation or comment.
Conspiracy of Silence is a 56 minute documentary film detailing an alleged child sex scandal that involved many children from Nebraska institution, Boys Town and Lawrence King, or Lawrence Larry King. The organized child sex parties implicated the Reagan and Bush White House during the 1980s. King was the ringleader of the sex ring which had links to other fellow political conservatives in Washington D.C. including Republican lobbyist Craig J. Spence, Sen. Elizabeth Dole's staff, along with members of the financial elite of Nebraska.
It features former CIA Director William Colby talking about the high-level child kidnap and sex-slave ring. A grand jury was rigged so that instead of investigating the charges, it turned around and charged the victim/witnesses with perjury. One girl went to jail rather than recant her charges and has never recanted.
The chief investigator for the Nebraska State Legislature committee which was investigating the charges was killed in a small plane crash, just after he obtained evidence he considered irrefutable. He previously worried about his plane being sabotaged.
The documentary was produced over the course of ten months by British corporation Yorkshire Television for broadcast in the US on May 3, 1994, on the Discovery Channel.
However, the documentary was never aired. This is because Congress threatened more restrictive television laws. Most copies of the finished product were destroyed by parties unknown, but a mostly completed workprint of the documentary was sent anonymously to former State Senator Nebraska attorney John DeCamp a year after all copies were supposedly destroyed.
Then-Nebraska State Senator John DeCamp, who continues to be the kids' lawyer, pro bono, wrote the best-selling The Franklin Coverup, now out in an updated edition. The former CIA director Bill Colby ambiguously acknowledged to John DeCamp that the scenario described is real, and not long thereafter Colby turned up dead under suspicious circumstances.

BoysTown-A supplier of boys to Washington DC
BoysTown was funneling boys and drugs to prominent Washington DC, and others. This was during Reagan and daddy Bush days. As usual it was swept under the rug, but the pedophilia has not stopped.

What's Happening to Restaurants and Nightclubs in America's Oldest Gayborhood — Boystown
In Eater's first-ever documentary, 'Boystown', writer and editor Zach Stafford explores the changing identity of America's oldest gayborhood through its bars, restaurants, and bakeries. A confluence of factors — including gentrification and the commodification of the queer lifestyle — has led to the disappearances of queer-centric spaces across the country, and Zach's investigation of this one neighborhood sheds a light on much broader trends.
Eater is the one-stop-shop for food and restaurant obsessives across the country. With features, explainers, animations, recipes, and more — it’s the most indulgent food content around. So get hungry.

Embracing New Frontiers at Boys Town
After the death of his parents, Edward was raised in the home of abusive relatives. With the help of his aunt and uncle, Debbie and Don, he was rescued. They turned to Boys Town to help them reconnect with Edward, so that he could once again be part of a loving, caring family.
Skyler, Boys Town In-Home Family Consultant: They took him in and got involved with us.
Debbie, Edward's Aunt, who rescued him after years of abuse: So he went from locked down to, he's a wild child now. I just felt bad putting boundaries on him, but then it got to the point where he was now stepping over the boundaries. So that's when Skyler was in there telling me you need to set some kind of limitations because if you don't he's going to run right over the top of you.
Skyler: Just are showing him how to make friends because in the situation that he was in before he got involved with me, he wasn't really allowed to have many friends or people he could associate with. So showing him clean, healthy supports through sports, working different places that he can go work at and how to respect the adults that you live with.
Debbie: And Skyler taught me how to be a parent.
Edward: Just basically you know, he helped me how to get my life set up to wear it should be, up to a 17 year old standards way of living. This is how you should be living. You should doing this and you should have a job. So, he helped me get a job and all of that so he has taught me a lot.
Debbie: He told us that first off he had not been to a doctor, dentist or had his eyes checked, nothing, the entire time they had him. Skyler would offer to take him to some of his appointments and was there to talk to him and help him out.
Skyler: He graduated from high school. He was not on track to graduate from high school. He had no long-term plans set out for himself for after he did graduate high school and seeing him lately with getting into the army and getting ready to go into the army in a couple weeks, graduating high school, and just seeing him succeed.
Edward: All of the stuff I am leaving behind, I am not going to see for awhile, it is going to be hard but I guess I had cope with it. Not before.
Debbie: I hope for everything. I want him to have everything, a good life and everything he has ever wanted.
Edward: Well, that's going to happen. It will.
Debbie: Sure it will.
Edward: It will happen one way or another. We are half-way there. We are going.
Debbie: His mom would be proud and his dad would be too. He's going to have it all.
Despite spending more than 12 years in an abusive household, with Boys Town's help Edward now has a loving home, caring family and a direction in life. We need your help to give more families the support they need to rebuild their lives. Heal a family. Support Boys Town.
