Located within the hot springs prefecture of Oita in Kyushu is the world famous hot springs resort town of Beppu. Visitors can experience eight different springs here: Beppu, Kannawa, Myoban, Kankaiji, Hamawaki, Kamegawa, Horita and Shibaseki. It has eight major geothermal hot spots, sometimes referred to as the eight hells of Beppu. They are presented to visitors in a rather touristy fashion, which might not appeal to everyone. Six of them are located in the Kannawa district and two in the more remote Shibaseki district.
Oniishi Bozu Jigoku
This hell is named after the mud bubbles, which emerge from boiling mud pools and look like the shaven heads of monks. Gray thermal mud at boiling temperature looks like the bald head of a bouzu or a Buddhist monk. It is located next to the Umi-jigoku. There are also foot bath and onsen inside the area

Kamado Jigoku
The cooking pot hell features several boiling ponds and a showy demon statue as cook. fumarolic activity here used to boil Rice in order to offer to the gods.On the grounds, visitors can enjoy hand and foot baths, drink the hot spring water, inhale the hot spring steam and try various snacks cooked or steamed by the hot spring

[Cinematic] Hells of Beppu : Umi Jigoku - Oita - 海地獄
Famous for its many hells or in Japanese Jigoku (地獄) Beppu city is by far the best location in Japan to enjoy these natural wonders in a unique, yet quite touristy fashion. Beppu counts seven different hells, but two of them are, as far as we are concerned, the most interesting ones and today we will start with the beautiful Umi Jigoku.
Umi in Japanese stands for sea, and you could translate the name of the place as the “sea hell”. Thanks to its beautiful boiling blue water, Umi Jigoku is Beppu’s most famous hell of all. Umi Jigoku was created approximately 1,200 years ago following the eruption of Mt. Tsurumi. And despite its ocean color looks, the water in Umi Jigoku is actually around 98°C/209°F!

Célèbre pour ses nombreux “enfers”, ou Jigoku (地獄) en japonais, la ville de Beppu est de loin le meilleur endroit pour profiter de ces merveilles de la nature sans que ça grouille de touristes, du moins pour le moment. Beppu compte sept enfers différents, mais deux d’entre eux sont, si nous partageons le même point de vue, quelques-uns des plus intéressants dont le très beau Umi Jigoku que nous visitons aujourd’hui.
Umi en japonais signifie “mer”, ce qui veut dire que le nom entier évoque “L’Enfer de la Mer”. Grâce à ses belles eaux bleues en ébullition, Umi Jigoku est de loin le plus célèbre enfer de tous. Il a été créé il y a environ 1200 ans après l’éruption du Mont Tsurumi, et malgré son eau en apparence calme, sachez qu’elle stagne aux alentours des 98°C!

Beppu Onsen Jigoku is located in Beppu City Oita Ken Japan. This is one of the most exciting tourist destination in Oita. But beware, this onsen is not for bathing because the temperature is 100 degrees.
