Brachina Gorge
This is a trip through the Brachina Gorge which has some stunning scenery with views of Heysen & ABS ranges. The gorge meanders its way through sharp sawtooth ridges of resistant quartzite. This spectacular gorge was once used as a pass through which bullock teams pulled their loads and is now a favourite picnic and camping area. “Brachina” derived from the Aboriginal word ‘vachina’, meaning cranky, refers to a mythical argument between birds over a grind stone.
A highlight of the trip through the gorge is sighting the Yellow Footed Rock Wallaby which have a special little reserve for them with just the correct amount of natural habitat.
A bit of a mix of photographs and some old video pre HD days so apologies for the quality of those shots, but I did not want to leave them out so as to complete the story.
This is the fourth in my series of six videos taken during our long weekend visit to the Flinders National Park. The gorge lies inside the National Park and the ‘Corridors through Time’ Geological Trail has been established through this Gorge which interprets the geological history of the area. Interpretive signs are located at significant points throughout the gorge. Once again the music has been provided by an Australian artists and i have given credit at the end and listed the songs.
Enjoy and please feel free to leave a comment.

Flinders Ranges Exploration Walking Holiday
Discover dramatic gorges & diverse wildlife in Mount Remarkable National Park / Wander the rim of the awe-inspiring natural amphitheatre of Wilpena Pound (Ikara) / Stay on a sheep station & relax around evening campfires / Walk sections of the Gammon Ranges, Mawson Plateau & Heysen Trail / Bushwalks around Arkaroola Wilderness Sanctuary / Explore ancient geographical landscapes in Bunyeroo Valley & Brachina Gorge / Visit the historical villages of Burra & Mintaro / Two tour leaders give a choice of varied walk options
Spanning 400km, the Flinders Ranges are one of Australia’s most captivating arid mountain chains. Renowned for their natural, cultural and geological significance, the 'Flinders’ are rich in cultural heritage and famed for craggy peaks, river red gums, quiet gorges and abundant wildlife. Our overland journey explores the length and breadth of this ancient part of the world. We loop back in time (1600 million years) deep into geological history. Melrose, our first stop, includes walks to nearby Alligator Gorge and Dutchman’s Stern in Mount Remarkable National Park. At Wilpena Pound (Ikara) we confront the full majesty of the ranges via a network of backtracks and memorable walks from our base at Rawnsley Park Station. Pushing north, past the Gammon Ranges, our walks delve into the mountain labyrinth and mineral marvel that is Arkaroola. Then, crossing back west, the legendary Prairie Hotel is the base for forays into the mighty Parachilna and Brachina gorges, home to Yellow-footed rock wallabies and vivid heart of 'Heysen country’. Immersing ourselves in mid-nineteenth century we end our travels soaking up the history of Burra and staying in the charming village of Mintaro.
Bunyeroo Gorge
This is a trip through the Bunyeroo Gorge which also has some stunning scenery with views of Heysen & ABS ranges along with its impressive views to Wilpena Pound's Razorback Ridge from the lookouts. The gorge albeit rather short meanders its way through sharp sawtooth ridges of resistant quartzite. Bunyeroo Gorge is on the Bunyeroo Creek nestled amongst mountains such as Mount Rupert (556m), Mount Abrupt (818m) and The Guardian (613m).
A bit of a mix of photographs and some old video pre HD days so apologies for the quality of those shots, but I did not want to leave them out so as to complete the story.
This is the fifth in my series of six videos taken during our long weekend visit to the Flinders National Park. Brachina Gorge drive part 1 : Touring Australia
This is the first of five parts showing the drive from Brachina East camp ground to the western end of the Brachina Gorge. In my opinion one of 'the' scenic drives in Australia. This was shot in the morning with the sun in the right position for good lighting. The scenery and the geology of the Flinders Ranges offer outstanding beauty when you have the sun behind you. Recent rains had turned the road into a bit of a mess and in view of the fact that most of the road follows a water course it was no wonder. Many years ago I did this drive in a family sedan. This shoot was from a Nissan Patrol and the camera used was a Sony HDR CX700VE mounted on a tripod which I have modified to straddle the centre console. I hope that you enjoy this tour through a very special area in the Flinders Ranges National Park.
Ikara - Wilpena Pound (Flinders Ranges)
A truly Australian place to welcome Spring.
Arkaroola's Ridge Top Tour - Flinders Ranges
Arkaroola is a Wilderness Sanctuary in the Flinders Ranges, South Australia where you can experience fantastic scenery, wildlife, do some 4 wheel driving and just get back to nature in all it's beauty and ruggedness. One tour that is offered at Arkaroola is the famous Ridge Top Tour where you are taken out in one of their 4WD vehicles to Siller's Lookout, only 21kms from Arkaroola Village, but still about a 2 hour drive each way as the terrain is so rugged. It is an experience you will not forget in a hurry and you can quickly figure as you travel about Arkaroola why Sir Douglas Mawson visited and spent considerable time at Arkaroola, more so than what he spent in the Antartic. Sir Mark Oliphant (once Governor of South AUstralia) also spent considerable time at Arkaroola with his interest in Geology and Radium, both paramount in the region.
This clip is of our recent Ridge Top Tour in September 2015. It was my second time and my husband's 6th time as it is an awesome tour. Highly recommend anyone traveling to the Flinders Ranges to go the extra distance north to Arkaroola from Blinman as it is well worth the travel.
Wilpena Pound - Flinders Ranges
A bit of flightseeing around the Flinders Ranges in South Australia is a must. This video was taken at Wilpena Pound, just one of many awesome formations. Lake Torrens and Lake Frome, two giant salt lakes, are nearby and also well worth a look from the air.
Arkaroola Wilderness Sanctuary Ridgetop Tour
The Ridgetop Tour at Arkaroola Wilderness Sanctuary is a legendary tourist experience. Not for the faint hearted, it takes you through some amazing scenery in the Flinders Ranges. We did see more wallabies than this during the tour, but this one was the only time I had the camera turned on.
I know the cost puts some people off, but I would really recommend it. It's one of those experiences you're unlikely to forget, particularly if you're not confident enough to drive yourself to some remote places.
The scenery is breathtaking, the weather when I went was perfect, the road is exciting in places and our guide was knowledgeable and entertaining.
