Bradford Cathedral's WWI Bells Dedication
Bradford Cathedral’s bells are once again ringing out across the city after being rededicated by the Dean of Bradford and the Lord Mayor of Bradford. A rededication evening (on Tuesday 12 June) which guided tours given by local schoolchildren, a special choral evensong, and a presentation on the project .
Bellringing at Bradford Cathedral, West Yorkshire
At the YACR meeting today, due to ruddy Northern being on Strike again, I only rung at Bradford Cathedral. This is the 3rd ring of 12 that I've rung at, the first being Halifax Minster and the second being Oldham Parish Church. In addition, this is the second cathedral I have rung at, the first being Blackburn Cathedral on my ringing outing in September. The bells here are an amazing Taylor ring of 12 bells tuned to D, with the tenor weighing 25cwt. I was one of the first people here, and believe it or not, I raised the front 10 bells while people were coming in, and then later on rang the two tenors. The Bradford Cathedral Tenor is now the heaviest bell that I have rung. I really enjoyed ringing them, cracking set of bells, it is a shame that they don't get rung as a 12 that often, as the local band is quite weak, though it did host the Western Branch's 12 bell practise alternating with Halifax, but that is held at Halifax now. But these bells have been greatfully restored last year and are as good as ever.
I also have a picture of the bells themselves on my Instagram page:
The middle of the clock face is actually a window, where an electric non-chiming clock powers the hands. There has been no chiming clock since the old bells went in the 1920s and the current ring of bells were cast. I filmed outside as I was asked by the ringing master not to film in the ringing room, which I respected.
BBC TV Psalm 138 (Walter Alcock): Bradford Cathedral 1997 (Alan Horsey)
From the 1997 “Maundy Service” from Bradford Cathedral, held in the presence of the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh and broadcast on 27 March by Yorkshire Television. With the choir of Bradford Cathedral and the choristers of the Chapel Royal, directed by Alan Horsey. Unfortunately, the commentator was unable to resist talking over some of the music.
1 I will give thanks unto thee, O Lord, with my whole heart; even before the gods will I sing praise unto thee.
2 I will worship toward thy holy temple, and praise thy Name, because of thy loving-kindness and truth; for thou hast magnified thy Name, and thy word, above all things.
3 When I called upon thee, thou heardest me; and enduedst my soul with much strength.
4 All the kings of the earth shall praise thee, O Lord; for they have heard the words of thy mouth.
5 Yea, they shall sing in the ways of the Lord, that great is the glory of the Lord.
6 For though the Lord be high, yet hath he respect unto the lowly; as for the proud, he beholdeth them afar off.
7 Though I walk in the midst of trouble, yet shalt thou refresh me; thou shalt stretch forth thy hand upon the furiousness of mine enemies, and thy right hand shall save me.
8 The Lord shall make good his loving-kindness toward me; yea, thy mercy, O Lord, endureth for ever; despise not then the works of thine own hands.
