The magnificent Fife Arms Hotel in Braemar, Scotland, one of the best hotels in the world 2019
A view within the magnificent Fife Arms Hotel in Braemar, Scotland, which features an original Picasso and a Lucian Freud on the walls, a Steinway piano treated with bleach by artist Mark Bradford and a hand-painted ceiling in the drawing room by Zhang Enli.
The hotel has been beautifully restored and improved by the new owners Iwan and Manuela Wirth of the international art gallery Hauser & Wirth. It was officially opened on Friday 11th January 2019 by their royal highnesses, the Duke & Duchess of Rothesay, Prince Charles and Camilla.
The hotel was originally built by the Duke of Fife in 1856 as a hunting lodge by Clunie Water, but during the last few years has undergone extensive restoration, with interiors by designer Russell Sage and features over 14,000 historic objects, artwork and artefacts. These include a Louise Bourgeois spider in the hotel courtyard, an original drawing by Queen Victoria, installations, paintings and drawings by artists-in-residence Gideon Summerfield and Alec Finlay. The public bar is called the 'Flying Stag' and features this creature above the bar.

Tour Scotland video of photographs of Braemar Castle on visit to Aberdeenshire. From the Late Middle Ages this Scottish ccastle was a stronghold of the Earls of Mar. The present Braemar Castle was constructed in 1628 by John Erskine, 18th Earl of Mar as a hunting lodge and to counter the rising power of the Farquharsons. An important garrison after the 1745 Jacobite uprising the castle had been attacked and burned by John Farquharson, the Black Colonel of Inverey in 1689. In 1715 the castle was forfeited to the Crown following the Earl of Mar's leadership of the rebellion. The castle and lands were purchased by John Farquharson, 9th Laird of Invercauld. Arrival of her Majesty the Queen, with HRH Prince Philip the Duke of Edinburgh, Prince Charles and The Princess Royal, Princess Anne, to the 2017 Braemar Gathering in Royal Deeside, Aberdeenshire, Scotland. The massed Scottish Pipe Bands then parade before the Royal family, led by leading Drum Major Roland Stewart. The bands were Lonach, Ballater & District, Huntly & District, Isle of Cumbrae RBLS, Perth & District, Ellon & District RBL, Bucksburn & District, Fraserburgh RBL, Inverurie & District, Grampian & District plus Blairgowrie & District.

Her Majesty the Queen is officially welcomed to Balmoral Castle at the start of her annual summer break with a Royal Guard of honour, provided by the Balaklava Company, The Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders & their Mascot the Shetland Pony Cpl Cruachan IV on 6th August 2018. The queen is escorted by the Officer Commanding Johnny Thompson.
Balaklava Company is part of 5th Battalion The Royal Regiment of Scotland (5 SCOTS) The Pipes and drums are from The Highlanders, 4th Battalion, Royal Regiment of Scotland.

Before heading back home to London, I decided to spend my last few hours in the Scottish Highlands. Here is the full journey from Turriff to Braemar.

Her Majesty the Queen with HRH Prince Charles the Duke of Rothesay and The Princess Royal, Princess Anne, arrive at the 2018 Braemar Gathering, held in the Princess Royal & Duke of Fife Memorial Park in Braemar, Scotland.
The Queen and Princess Anne are presented with flowers and the Royal family welcomed, after which the massed Pipes & Drums led by leading Drum Major Roland Stuart parade around the Highland Games field.
The bands present were Ballater & District Pipe Band, Lonach Pipe Band, Perth & District Pipe Band, Blairgowrie & District Pipe Band, Kintore Pipe Band, The Royal Scots Ass Pipe Band, Grampian & District Pipe Band, Huntly & District Pipe Bnd, Fraserburgh RBL Pipe Band, Bucksburn & District Pipe Band and the Isle of Cumbrae RBL Pipe Band.

Jacobites take Scottish Castle from Redcoats during living history event in Aberdeenshire, 2018
Jacobites take historic Braemar Castle in Deeside, Aberdeenshire, Scotland, during re-enactment group training camp at this historic site. Members of Alan Breck's Prestonpans Volunteer Regiment were acting as both Jacobites and members of the Edinburgh City Guard.
This was part of a training weekend at the Castle, which on the frontier of Highland Aberdeenshire, was where thousands joined John Erskine, the Earl of Mar, in 1715 with the aim of restoring the ousted “Old Pretender” James Stuart to the throne of Scotland and England, raising the Jacobite Standard and starting the first Jacobite rebellion. After the raising Braemar Castle became a military garrison and evidence of their occupation still exists.

Her Majesty The Queen, The Duke and Duchess of Rothesay (as Prince Charles, The Prince of Wales and Camilla, The Duchess of Cornwall are known when in Scotland) as well as Peter Phillips and his wife, Autumn, arrive at the 2019 Braemar Gathering in Royal Deeside, Aberdeenshire, Scotland. After being presented with flower bouquets, the massed bands march into the games arena.
Led by leading Drum Major Roland Stuart, the pipe bands were Huntly & District, Fraserburgh RBL, Lower Clyde, Gordonstoun School, Inverurie, Perth & District, Blairgowrie, Ballater & District, Lonach, KIntore, Ellon & District RBL and RAF Central Scotland Pipes & Drums. The tunes are Scotland the Brave, Flett from Flotta and Wings.
Her Majesty is patron of the Highland games event, which are held at The Princess Royal and Duke of Fife Memorial Park, a short distance from the royals' summer residence Balmoral. The Games have been run in its present form since 1832, and the always held on the first Saturday of September. Queen Victoria first attended the gathering in 1848 and since then the reigning monarch and other members of the Royal Family have regularly visited.

Massed Pipes and Drums march to the 2019 Braemar Gathering in Royal Deeside, Aberdeenshire, Scotland
The massed bands of the Scottish Highlands gather outside the Invercauld Hotel on the edge of Braemar in Aberdeenshire, Scotland, to begin their annual parade through this small village high up in the Cairngorms National Park, making their way to the 2019 Braemar Gathering Highland Games.
Led by leading Drum Major Roland Stuart and the assembled Drum Majors, the bands then march through the village and past the recently opened Fife Arms Hotel in the centre of Braemar. The bands were Huntly & District Pipe Band, Fraserburgh Royal British Legion Pipe Band, Lower Clyde Pipes and Drums, Gordonstoun School Pipe Band, Inverurie Pipe Band, Perth & District Pipe Band, Blairgowrie Rattray & District Pipe Band, Ballater & District Pipe Band, Lonach Pipe Band, KIntore Pipe Band and Ellon & District Royal British Legion Pipe Band.
