Mount Abu |Road Trip Vlog| |Guru Shikhar, Nakki Lake, Sunset point, Dilwara Temples, Brahma Kumari|
Mount Abu (About this sound pronunciation (help·info)) is a popular hill station in the Aravalli Range in Sirohi district of Rajasthan state in western India near the border with Gujarat. The mountain forms a distinct rocky plateau 22 km long by 9 km wide. The highest peak on the mountain is Guru Shikhar at 1,722 m (5,650 ft) above sea level. It is referred to as 'an oasis in the desert' as its heights are home to rivers, lakes, waterfalls and evergreen forests. The nearest train station is Abu Road railway station: 27 km away.[2]
History[edit]
The ancient name of Mount Abu is Arbudaanchal. In the Puranas, the region has been referred to as Arbudaranya (forest of Arbhuda) and 'Abu' is a diminutive of this ancient name. It is believed that sage Vashistha retired to the southern spur at Mount Abu following his differences with sage Vishvamitra. There is another mythology according to which a serpent named Arbuda saved the life of Nandi (Lord Shiva's bull). The incident happened on the mountain that is currently known as Mount Abu and so the mountain is named Arbudaranya after that incident which gradually became Abu.
The conquest of Mount Abu in 1311 CE by Rao Lumba of Deora-Chauhan dynasty brought to an end the reign of the Parmars and marked the decline of Mount Abu. He shifted the capital city to Chandravati in the plains. After the destruction of Chandravati in 1405, Rao Shasmal made Sirohi his headquarters. Later it was leased by the British government from the then Maharaja of Sirohi for use as the headquarters.
Mount Abu and Gurjars[edit]
The Arbuda Mountains (Abu Parvat ' Mount Abu) region is said to be original abode of the famous Gurjars. The association of the Gurjars with the mountain is noticed in many inscriptions and epigraphs including Tilakamanjari of Dhanpala.[3] These Gurjars (Gujars or Gujjars) migrated from the Arbuda mountain region. As early as sixth century CE, they set up one or more principalities in Rajasthan and Gujarat. Almost all or a larger part of Rajasthan and Gujarat had been known as Gurjaratra (country ruled or protected by the Gurjars) or Gurjarabhumi (land of the Gurjars) for centuries before the Mughal period.[4]
Mount Abu and Rajputs[edit]
According to a legend, sage Vasishta performed a great yajna at the peak of Mount Abu, to seek from the gods a provision for the defense of righteousness on earth. In answer to his prayer, a youth arose from the Agnikunda (fire-altar) — the first Agnivansha Rajput.[5][6]
Tourism[edit]
Adishwara temple, Dilwara Temples
Sunset at Mount Abu
Mount Abu town, the only hill station in Rajasthan, is at an elevation of 1,220 m (4,003 ft). It has been a popular retreat from the heat of Rajasthan and neighbouring Gujarat for centuries. The Mount Abu Wildlife Sanctuary was established in 1960 and covers 290 km² of the mountain.
The mountain is home to several Hindu temples, including the Adhar Devi Temple (also known as Arbuda Devi Temple), carved out of solid rock; the Shri Raghunathji Temple; and a shrine and temple to Dattatreya built atop the Guru Shikhar peak and a number of Jain temples including Dilwara Temples, a complex of temples carved of white marble built between the 11th and 13th centuries AD. The oldest of these is the Vimal Vasahi temple, built in 1021 AD by Vimal Shah and dedicated to the first of the Jain Tirthankaras. They include the Achaleswar Mahadev Temple (1412) and the Kantinath Temple (1513). It is the location of the headquarters of the Brahma Kumaris.
The Achalgarh Fort, built in the 14th century by Rana Kumbha of Mewar, is nearby and at its center is the popular visitor attraction of the Nakki Lake. The Toad Rock is on a hill near the lake. Close to the fort is the Achaleshwar Mahadev Temple, a popular Shiva temple.
The Durga Ambika Mata Temple lies in a cleft of rock in Jagat, just outside Mount Abu town.
In Mount Abu, the faith community of Brahma Kumaris has its spiritual headquarters, which are represented by its own account in 85 countries.[7] Every year about 2.5 million visitors are supposed to visit the sprawling campus of that spiritual movement.[8]
Tourism[edit]
While there are hundreds of hotels for tourists, some Dharamshalas can be found for as low as Rs.700 per night. Raghunath Dharamshala at the bank of Nakki Lake is one of those in a spiritual environment.
In summer thousands of people come here. To reach Mount Abu, the nearest approach by road is from Abu Road which is 27 kms.
The setting sun scene on Mt Abu is famous amongst tourist; it was depicted in the movie Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak.[citation needed]
The Achaleshwar Mahadev Temple is a Shiva temple situated just outside the Achalgarh Fort, located in the Abu Roadtehsil of Sirohi district, in the western Indian state of Rajasthan. The temple is believed to have been constructed sometime in the 9th century AD, and by the Paramara dynasty, which is also credited with having constructed the original structure of the Achalgarh Fort, later reconstructed, renovated and named as Achalgarh by Maharana Kumbha in 1452 CE.

Previously Bhinmal was called Shrimaal nagar. Shrimali Brahmins community originate from here.[citation needed] Bhinmal was the early capital of the kingdom of Gurjaradesa, a name derived from the Gurjara people. The name of the town during the medieval age was Bhillamal. Xuanzang visited Bhillamal (Bhinmal) in about 641 AD. He called it Pi-lo-mo-lo and documented the Gurjara kingdom 833 miles in circuit, the second largest kingdom in Western India.
Stone inscriptions of the year 1333 of the Vikrama Samvat (1277 AD) are found among ruins of some ancient temples across the town. There are signs that Lord Mahavira Swami, the 24th Jain Tirthankar, wandered here, known as 'jeevit swami'. According to the Chinese traveller Xuanzang, the King of Bhinmal was a Kshatriya, celebrated for his wisdom and virtue, a believer in Buddhism and Jainism and a man of exceptional abilities. He was just twenty years old. The people of the country were flourishing. Brahmanism and Jainism dominated the city. There was only one Buddhist monastery with 100 monks in 'Buddha Vaas' neighbourhood.
Ala ud din Khilji as the second ruler of the Khilji dynasty also destroyed and looted Srimala (ancient Bhinmal) when he conquered Jalore in 1310 AD. Prior to that ,Srimala was a premier city of northwestern India. The city was laid out in the shape of a square. It has 84 gates. The mid-15th-century chronicle Kanhadade Prabandha provide the descriptions of many Islamic attacks on Bhinmal.
There were several temples of Jain Tirthankar and Hindu gods such as Ganapati, Kshetrapala, Chandikadevi, and Shiva. The Sun temple of Bhinmal known as Jagatsvami was one of the earliest and most famous temples of Rajasthan. The temple had beautiful torana (archway). The temple was perhaps built during the reign of Gurjara Pratiharas who were sun worshippers. In ancient time, the festival was held at temple in the Hindu calendar month of Asvin.
There were also a number of Jain temples, the one of Mahavira (Mhaveerji) being the most famous. This temple was built by king Kumarpal and established by Acharya Hemachandra, dedicated to 1st Jain Tirthankar Rishabha. Currently, the temple is dedicated to the 24th Jain Tirthankar Mahavira, re-established by Vidhyachandra Suri of Tapagachha, belonging to the Tristutik sect.
Bhinmal was a great centre of learning. The well known Sanskrit poet Magha, the author of Sisupalavadha, lived here in 680 AD. Brahmagupta, the well-known mathematicians astronomer, was born in 598 AD in Bhinmal. He is likely to have lived most of his life in the town, during the empire of Harsha. As a result Brahmagupta is often referred to as Bhillamalacarya, the teacher from Bhillamala (Bhinmal).

Dilwara Jain Temple Mount Abu

Nareli Jain Temple, is a new Jain temple located on the outskirts of Ajmer 7 kilometers
from the city center and 128 kilometers west of Jaipur on the main national highway 8.[1]
Gavin Thomas, in his book, The Rough Guide to Rajasthan, Delhi & Agra (2010, p. 257),
writes on Nareli Jain Temple:[2]
There's another striking monument to the Jain faith some 7km southeast of Ajmer on the
Jaipur bypass, the angular modern Nareli Temple, a striking edifice mixing traditional and
contemporary architectural styles to somewhat quirky effect, with 23 further miniature
temples lined up on the hill above.
The other Jain temple that the author talks about is the Ajmer Jain Temple.
