INDIAN FOOD Dinner Cruise on the Brahmaputra River + Pani Puri | Guwahati, Assam, India
After spending six weeks in some of India’s biggest and most heavily-touristed cities, I decided to change it up a bit by visiting an area of the country that doesn’t see a lot of foreigners: the states of Assam and Meghalaya in northeast India. Here, the cities are calmer, there is tons of natural beauty, the foods are unique, and the history is rich and fascinating. I’m so excited to share my experiences there with you!
My second day in Guwahati, Assam, India continued with something special for dinner. My new friend Kabyashree and I decided to take a dinner cruise down the Brahmaputra River, which is the widest river in India and the fifth-largest in Asia. Come along with us as we take a ride on the Afresco Grand dinner cruise and have some Pani Puri afterward!
The cruise lasts for an hour from 4-5 p.m. and costs 400 rupees/roughly $5.75 per person, but the cost of food is extra. From there, we boarded and headed up to the top deck, where there is an open terrace and tables. I went with a Kingfisher premium beer. Beer isn’t very common in India, so I was excited to have one!
We went with some paneer chili for me and chicken pakora for Kabyashree, which would come out at 4:30 so we’d have time to enjoy our drinks, chill, and watch the sunset over the Brahmaputra River, which is very important to the people of Assam.
I love paneer chili. It’s an Indo-Chinese dish with big chunks of paneer. It also contained green peppers and onions. I loved the flavor combination of them all together as well as the heat from the chilies. It is an excellent, spicy veg dish. I loved it!
Next, I tried the chicken pakora, which consisted of boneless, minced chicken that is fried into small balls or patties. It didn’t come with any chutneys or dipping sauces besides ketchup, but it went really well with the beer.
The cruise was a fantastic experience. As we rode down the river, we passed the smallest river island in the world, Umananda Island. We didn’t go there because it was Shivrati, but we could see lots of ferries there. The river is also known for its river dolphins, which are the main attraction.
After the cruise, I wanted to buy some souvenirs for my family. Assamese souvenirs use a lot of bamboo and wood, and are usually animal-related. Then we took a rickshaw from the river over a tuk-tuk. It cost 20 rupees/$0.29 U.S., and is more eco-friendly than a tuk-tuk!
We visited an incredible shop with lots of amazing souvenirs including carved wooden rhinos, hats, baskets, lanterns, beer mugs, masks, and lots of other wood and bamboo goods. I bought an elephant mask and a deer mask and a farmer’s hat. It only cost 600 rupees/$8.62 U.S. for everything!
Then, because we only had a little to eat on the cruise, I got some pani puris from a guy along the side of the road! Pani puri is my favorite Indian street food and I can eat them forever! It only costs 10 rupees/$0.14 U.S. for 5 pani puris, so it’s an amazing deal! He gave me an extra one and then I had four more afterward! The guy keeps giving you more until you’re ready for him to stop, which is amazing. But with the mosquitoes coming out, it was time for me to go before I got eaten alive!
I hope you enjoyed coming along on our Brahmaputra River breakfast cruise, our shopping trip, and our mini-pani puri feast on the street! Brahmaputra River Cruise
This video gives an insight into the many delights you can enjoy on one of Mountain Kingdoms' holidays cruising the mighty Brahmaputra river.
At almost 3,000km long, flowing from the high mountains of Tibet, through northeast India and into northern Bangladesh, the Brahmaputra is one of Asia’s mightiest rivers. During the spring, when the snows of the Himalaya melt, the icy waters spill and tumble through gorges, channels and sandbanks, then slow upon reaching the tranquil plains of Assam. Here the river becomes the lifeblood of the region, flooding and enriching the surrounding fields and renewing the grasslands which support much of the varied wildlife of Assam. Tribal communities make their living along the banks of the Brahmaputra growing rice in the paddy fields and tea on higher ground. The lush green forests and sandy beaches that pepper the Brahmaputra’s peaceful landscape are home to countless species of bird and animal including the endangered Bengal tiger and One-horned rhinoceros.
The best way to immerse yourself in these scenes from the Brahmaputra River is to take a cruise along its serene waters, making regular stops to meet the local people, explore wildlife sanctuaries and discover the treasures of Assamese culture. There are many boats that ply their trade along the river but one of the finest is the luxurious Mahabaahu cruise ship. As you will see from the video, you will experience every comfort during your week on board. The cabins are spacious and extremely well-appointed with large en suite bathrooms, mini bar and air conditioning.
There are a range of first rate facilities to enjoy during your cruise including a library, spa, sauna, jacuzzi and even a swimming pool. Delicious food and fine dining is enjoyed in the Mahabaahu’s superb restaurant and there are lots of on board activities such as relaxing yoga classes and spa treatments, cookery demonstrations and informative talks from the knowledgeable crew members. Alternatively you can just relax on the sundeck and enjoy the wonderful views of the Brahmaputra River set against the stunning backdrop of high Himalayan peaks.
Frequent shore visits will allow you to explore the many cultural and wildlife highlights of the area. Your first port of call is a tea estate at Silghat to observe the fascinating production of one of Assam’s finest and most celebrated products; no doubt enjoying a cup or two along the way! Later in the cruise, you will visit the village of Mishing where the local women are renowned for their handloom weaving skills. You will enjoy demonstrations of their craft and see many examples of their fine cloth and traditional dress.
You will also spend some time on Majuli Island, known to be the world’s largest river island and a capital of Assamese civilization since the 15th century. Inhabited by tribal groups, its undoubted treasures are its monasteries, or satras, which are the centre of culture, art, religion and community on the island. They are vitally important for preserving historic artefacts and cultural traditions and you will have the opportunity to see performances of colourful tribal dances. Your final cultural excursion is to Sibsagar – the ancient city of the Ahom kings famed for its impressive Shiva temples.
Perhaps though, the highlight of your entire cruise will be your visit to Kaziranga National Park – a UNESCO World Heritage Site and home to the rare One-horned rhinoceros as well as myriad birds and other animals such as tiger, deer and bison. Accompanied by expert guides and naturalists, you will enjoy a thrilling elephant-back safari as well as jeep safaris to discover the abundant wildlife.
And, at the end of each exciting and inspiring day, you will return to the cruise ship and sip a sundowner while enjoying sunset views of the Brahmaputra River.
Mountain Kingdoms offer the Brahmaputra River Cruise together with a week in Bhutan, Darjeeling or Rajasthan in India.
