Nestled at the foot of the Black Forest in South Germany, Baden-Baden is a chic destination for those who fancy a dip in its famous salt- and radon-rich thermal hot springs. The town has been a popular destination for so long that it's starting to show its age, but not to worry. It's still very classy, picturesque and well-maintained. (The Dame Julie Andrews of German spa towns, if you will.) Sporty types will find an abundance of opportunities to enjoy golf, tennis, horseback riding and skiing nearby in winter.
Baden-Baden is a spa town in southwestern Germany’s Black Forest, near the border with France. Its thermal baths led to fame as a fashionable 19th-century resort. Alongside the Oos River, park-lined Lichtentaler Allee is the town’s central promenade. The Kurhaus complex (1824) contains the elegant, Versailles-inspired Spielbank (casino). Its Trinkhalle has a loggia decorated with frescoes and a mineral-water fountain.

Walk along the river Oos or in the hills and forests around the town. The tourist office at the Trinkhalle can sell you a booklet of walks based on bus routes. The walking is generally easy, but for maximum reward for minimum effort, take bus 204/205 to the Merkur Bergbahn funicular railway, ride up to the cafe at the top, and walk back via the old castle (Altes Schloss).

Baden-Baden is a town in Baden-Württemberg, Germany. It is located on the western foothills of the Black Forest, on the banks of the Oos River, in the region of Karlsruhe.
In 1931, the town of Baden-Baden was officially given its double name which is the short form for Baden in Baden (i.e. Baden in the state of Baden). This was already in common use to distinguish the town from Baden bei Wien and Baden im Aargau. In both World Wars, the town escaped destruction. After World War II, Baden-Baden became the headquarters of the French forces in Germany.
During the Second Congress of Rastatt, Baden-Baden was rediscovered as a spa town. The 19th century saw the town rise to become a meeting place for celebrities, attracted by the hot springs as well as by the famous Casino, luxury hotels, horse races, and the gardens of the Lichtentaler Allee. Baden-Baden was then nicknamed the European summer capital. The Russian writer Dostoevsky wrote The Gambler while compulsively gambling at the Baden-Baden Casino. Johannes Brahms' local residence, the Brahmshaus, can still be visited today.

Baden-Baden, a Spa Town at the Edge of the Black Forest in Germany
Baden-Baden, meaning the Baths in Baden, is a spa town built on thermal springs at the edge of the Black Forest in Baden-Württemberg, south west Germany.
The springs of Baden-Baden have been known for more than 2,000 years, and their composition resembles that of the Roman baths of the 3rd century. The water at the baths of Caracalla-Therme spa is rich in sodium chloride, and comes from artesian wells 1,800 metres under the Florentiner Mountain.
The city offers many options for sports enthusiasts. Golf and tennis are both popular in the area. The countryside is ideal for hiking and mountain climbing. In the winter Baden-Baden is a skiing destination.
The popularity of the city as a spa dates from the early 19th century, when the Prussian queen visited the site to improve her health. During the 19th century, the town rose to become a meeting place for celebrities, who were attracted by the hot springs as well as by the famous Baden-Baden Casino, the luxury hotels, the horse races, and the gardens of the Lichtentaler Allee. Clients included Queen Victoria, Wilhelm I, Napoleon III, Berlioz, Brahms, Turgenev, and Dostoyevsky.
Badens's Spielbank casino is more than 200 years old and the oldest of its type in Germany. Dostoyevsky is said to have written The Gambler after he lost his money and even his shirt here. The rooms were designed in the style of a French château.
Don't be put off by its reputation as a hang-out for the rich. This picturesque town is beautifully situated in a wooded valley, and you can enjoy yourself here without spending or gambling a fortune.

My name is Sunny Ritter and I’ve loved music since before I was born. Back then, I had the pleasure of hearing some of my mom’s friends rehearsing the the Brahms piano quintet. The scherzo got me so excited, I couldn’t stop bopping around in there, despite the cramped conditions. My mom assumed “dancer” and enrolled me in ballet lessons almost as soon I could walk. But no. Pliés and pink chiffon didn’t float my boat. The best thing ballet brought me was my first piano teacher, Aya Kaukal, an accompanist at the Vienna State Opera Ballet. Aya’s the one who says things like, “Which part of the music makes your heart beat faster?”
Then there’s my other teacher, Vladimir Kharin, who invited me to the pre-college program at Vienna’s University of Music (MDW) when I was seven years old. He’s the one who says things like, “Sunny, that was good, but good isn’t enough for us. Good is bad!” I’m like, “Tell that to God!” In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. And God said, Let there be light, and there was light… Then God said, Let us make humankind in our image, and blessed them and said be fruitful and multiply… And then God saw all that he had made, and behold, it was good. But, God, didn’t you know, good isn’t enough!
So here are some of my braggables: First Prize at the International Feurich Competition in Vienna. First Prize, the Audience Prize, the Special Prize for the Best Interpretation of a Classical Work at the Steinway Piano Competition in Hamburg, Germany. First Prize at the International Piano Competition Clavis in St. Petersburg, Russia. Ten Special Prizes at the Münchner Klavierpodium in Munich, Germany. First Prize with Distinction at prima la musica in Vienna, as well as an invitation to perform solo and duo rep at Austria’s 34th Chopin Festival. Double prizewinner at the International Chopin Competition for Children and Youth in Szafarnia, Poland. Grand-prize winner across all age categories at the Mihaela Ursuleasa International Piano Competition at Bucharest, Romania, where I was the youngest competitor. First solo-recital at eight years old at Southminster in Ottawa, Canada. Orchestral debuts at eight years old in Bucharest (Polunin’s Concertino in A-moll) and Vienna (Mozart’s Jeunehomme). Under-aged prizewinner at the Anton Rubinstein Junior Piano Competition in Düsseldorf, Germany. Youngest competitor and prizewinner at the Heydner Wettbewerb, a closed-circle competition for the most promising pre-college students of Vienna’s renowned MDW.
At the end of the day, prizes don’t matter. It comes down to whether or not you love it. And now I come to my big confession: I actually hate the piano. It gives me nightmares. Huge three-legged monster. So many teeth. Some of them black. It’s the ugliest-sounding instrument. UNLESS you make it sing like an orchestra. That’s when the magic happens, and lo, you’ve got gooseflesh in a heatwave! Black and white turn into a rainbow. And 88 keys unlock hearts. Including mine!
I learned to read notes and words at the same time and quickly discovered that the stories in music are even better than the stories in books. Stravinsky famously said that music is powerless to express anything at all. I’m here to prove him wrong!
