Walks in England: Bramber Castle and its History
Bramber Castle is situated at the west of the tiny village of Bramber, near Steyning in West Sussex. Built by William De Braose around 1171, it was the administrative centre for the rape of Bramber.
I walk around the remains of the bailey and climb the motte, and later plunge into the defensive ditch that encircles it.

Bramber Castle
Bramber castle is one of the earliest Norman castles in England. A ruin now, it was once an important outpost of Norman rule in England. It was originally built in 1073 by William de Braose, the first Lord of Bramber. Its purpose was the defense of the important port city of Steyning and the River Adur, as well as the seat of the important de Braose family.
For another kind of view of this castle, check out Richard Vobes (the Bald Explorer)!
Bramber Castle
Built to defend an important port on the River Adur, Bramber Castle was constructed as a motte and bailey castle around 1073 by William De Braose, who fought alongside William the Conqueror at the battle of Hastings in 1066.
#24 Bramber Castle
Here Alan and I join Richard Vobes, 'The Bald Explorer' for a meet-up at the historic ruins of Bramber Castle in West Sussex. The Castle is a Norman motte-and-bailey structure formerly the caput of the large feudal barony of Bramber long held by the Braose family. It is situated in the village of Bramber, West Sussex overlooking the River Adur.

Bramber Castle
The remains of this Norman castle built around 1070ad are perched on a high natural knoll overlooking the River Adur, defending a gap in the South Downs. Built soon after the Norman Conquest to help protect William I’s newly won territories, the castle was the Sussex seat of the de Braose family. The one surviving wall of the tower, standing 14 metres high, provides a glimpse of how imposing the castle once was. A beautiful old ruin, filmed using the DJI Phantom 3 Advanced at 1080p 60fps. Thank you for watching.
Bramber Castle - exploring with Matt Easton
I stumbled on Bramber Castle by accident and knowing nothing about it went exploring it with my camera. It turns out from subsequent internet research that some of my conclusions may have been a bit wrong, but I seem to have been mostly correct! It's also evident that not a huge amount is really conclusively known about this castle. It's certainly a beautiful and interesting site. I'd love to see some more archaeology done there.
English Heritage Motovlogs - Bramber Castle
This is a new series I am putting together. I recently joined the English Heritage which gets me access to hundreds of historic points of interest in the UK and I love castles, so I am hoping to visit loads of them and vlog the visits on my bikes.
This first video is of Bramber Castle in West Sussex.
The below is from the English Heritage website:
Bramber Castle was founded by William de Braose as a defensive and administrative centre for Bramber, one of the six administrative regions – each of which was controlled by a castle – into which Sussex was divided following the Norman Conquest. It was held almost continually by de Braose and his descendants from its foundation by 1073 until 1450.
One of these descendants, another William de Braose, was among those barons suspected of disloyalty to King John in the early 13th century. The king demanded William’s two sons as hostages. Lady de Braose refused, saying she would not trust her sons to a man who had already murdered his own nephew. The castle was confiscated by the king and the family captured. Lady de Braose and her two sons died of starvation while imprisoned at Windsor Castle.
King John held Bramber Castle only briefly but is known to have carried out repairs to the buildings. Later the castle passed back to the de Braose family, who held it until the 14th century, and then to the Mowbray family.
Subsidence on a large scale led to the ruin of the castle during the 16th century. Its masonry was later used for building roads in the area, and it may have been occupied briefly by Parliamentarian forces during the Civil War.

A Visit to Bramber Castle
Wendy and I made a visit to a local ruined castle today. This video is rather long-winded, but I didn't have time to cut it down. I may review and re-upload it later. Anyway, Bramber Castle was originally built back in 1073 by William de Broase, a few years after the Norman conquest of England in 1066. So the castle is trending towards being a thousand years old. As you can see, it's not in the best of condition! To say the least! But the church next to it, which was built at the same time, is in quite good condition and is still in use.
This castle is just a few miles away from our home in Upper Beeding.

EXPLORING BRAMBER CASTLE RUINS | WILD CAMP RECCE | WEST SUSSEX
This is the last video from my last visit to Sussex with Candice from last year (2019) when we wild camped on nearby Cissbury Ring hillfort.
We had a couple of hours to kill before the camp so we headed over to the English Heritage owned ruins of Bramber Castle for an explore. Didn't expect to find as much as we did still standing. The rain wasn't pleasant. Scouted out a couple of spots for a potential future wild camp. Had a look in the church next door too.
