Brand's Laira Winery, Coonawarra: The Road to Red Wine
Brand's Laira Winery is one of Coonawarra's most iconic and respected wineries. The Coonawarra wine region in South Australia is celebrated as one of Australia's premium wine growing regions, particularly renowned for producing some of the best red wines in the country. One of the major factors in the quality of Coonawarra red wines are the famous terra rossa soils in the region, which create an optimal environment for vine growth.
The Brand's Laira winemakers have an intimate understanding of the land, owing to the winery's long and successful history of viticulture in the region.

Brand's Laira, Coonawarra: Vintage 2013
More often than not, each vintage in the Coonawarra wine region is a good one. However the subtle variations in the climate and winemaking still leave a distinct and memorable footprint across each wine, giving each year a recognisable personality.
The wines of Coonawarra are of a consistently high standard, but they also strive to a tell a story: of the people who made them, the land that bore them, and the year that was.

The Station Block Vineyard is the largest of the Brand's Laira vineyards and is situated adjacent to the old Coonawarra railway station, from where it earns its name.

Let's Taste - Brand's Laira 'Blockers' Shiraz 2014 & Cabernet Sauvignon 2015
On my wine podcast The Vincast I recently interviewed chief winemaker for Brand's Laira, Peter Weinberg ( Peter spoke a bit about the history of this Coonawarra producer, and something interesting about one of the founders Eric Brand, was that after acquiring the Laira property in 1950 he worked for 16 years as a 'Blocker', the Coonawarra name for a grower who sold their fruit and didn't make wine. This range of wines is named after this period, and I was interested to see how Peter expressed the two most important varieties for the region, let me know what you think in the comments below.
Wines tasted;
Brand's Laira 'Blockers' Shiraz 2014 - RRP $25.00
Brand's Laira 'Blockers' Cabernet Sauvignon 2015 - RRP $25.00

Transcription: hi it's Patrick from just wines today we're going to have a look at the Brands Laira Old Station Rose 2017 Rose from Coonawarra region as you can see it's a really lovely like pink salmon color in the class typical rosy color aromas of strawberries and cream yeah a little bit of spice in there as well on the palate really refreshing crisp Roseate as a style of wine that's a really picked up in Australia and the last sort of five years or so so it's very popular especially in the warmer months that we have now it's a great term it's a great food wine Reza is really best suited to food so I would serve it with poultry seafood creamy pastor things like that or if you want to enjoy it on its own it's great as well this particular Rose is made from a blend of Shiraz and Merlot so it's got quite a good body to it it's probably a fraction darker than than some of the Rose days that you see due to that it's also quite dry in style so it's not a sweet wine or halt and there is a misconception I think with some roses that they are quite sweet but this is quite dry it's something you really enjoy serve it nicely chilled and enjoy it over the summer months coming up Cheers
