Fisher Body Builds for GM
By the 1950s the company started by the Fisher Brothers to provide custom bodies for rich people had become the pillar of General Motors manufacturing empire. Every division relied on Fisher body to deliver the sheet metal it would sell. Eventually, the Fisher division was done away with when it was considered to be too ungainly but in the 50s it was the king of auto manufacturing.

Council Meeting - January 21, 2019
Meeting Highlights:
- A presentation was received from Brandon Neighbourhood Renewal Corporation (BNRC) General Manager Carly Gasparini and City of Brandon Community Development Coordinator Heather Reimer about the 2018 Downtown Ambassador Program. The idea for such a program was approved for $30,000 in funding during last year’s budget deliberations, which was ultimately granted to the BNRC to run the pilot project through July and August of 2018. An overview of the program, which employed five people and aimed to support community engagement, tourism, social planning and community safety in Brandon’s downtown, can be found here: A discussion on funding the program in future years was referred to City Council’s 2019 budget deliberations, which will take place on Saturday, January 26th.
- City Council representatives from the Poverty Committee, the Age-Friendly Committee, and the Brandon Museum and Archives Board presented reports for information.
- Council granted approval for the City of Brandon to move forward with its intention to construct a communication tower approximately 120 feet in total height behind the A.R. McDiarmid Civic Complex (638 Princess Avenue) for the purpose of creating a private radio network to be used by employees within its Operational Services Division. The project is anticipated to lower the City of Brandon’s radio communications costs and have an approximate payback of 3 to 4 years on an expected 15-year life cycle.
Council Meeting - October 21, 2019
Highlights:
- General Museum and Archives Inc. representative Barb Andrew provided Council with an update on the museum’s various exhibits and community partnerships, noting that approximately 500 individuals had visited the museum located at 19-9th Street through the first 9 months of the year. Andrew also provided Council with a sneak peek of future exhibit plans and upcoming events, adding that the museum continues to search for a new location in the downtown that allows for more storage, intake and exhibit preparation space, and can provide disability access.
- Council heard a delegation from Keystone Centre Board of Directors Chair Matt Bolley and Keystone Centre General Manager, Jeff Schumacher, on the matter of the Centre’s business plan recently submitted to the Province of Manitoba and the City of Brandon (the Centre’s two funding partners). Bolley touched on the many events hosted at the Keystone Centre that generate economic prosperity in the region, countered by some of the capital funding and debt challenges the Centre has dealt with in recent years. Bolley noted that the Centre would like to see a 10-year funding agreement struck with the Province and the City containing an annual promise of $375,000 in operating grants and $750,00 in capital funding (indexed to inflation) from each partner. Council accepted the delegation as information and indicated the funding request would be discussed during its upcoming budget deliberations.
- Council approved the recommendation from the Grants Review Committee that a total of $164,400.00 in funding be distributed to a total of 48 community groups or organizations in the 2020 budget year. Due to the nature of a request for $60,000 from the Central Council of Community Centres that was received, but not approved, Council agreed that it should be referred instead to the 2020 municipal budget deliberations.
- Councillor Jeff Fawcett provided a quick update on behalf of the Finance and Audit Committee, reporting on the City’s current investments and noting the City’s September budget review indicated a year-to-date surplus in both the operating and utility funds.
- Council approved a revision to the existing Street Naming Policy to include provisions for honourary and indigenous street naming. These changes will allow for the consideration of temporary honourary street name sign toppers in addition to a street’s original name (for a period of five years with potential to extend), and also encourages names relating to indigenous heritage when street names are being considered. Following the passing of these policy revisions, Council approved an administration recommendation for the honourary street name “Dan Halldorson Drive” to be bestowed upon the forthcoming extension of 34th Street between Pacific Avenue and McDonald Avenue for a period of five years. The idea to recognize Halldorson, a former Brandon resident and accomplished Canadian professional golfer, via the re-naming of 34th Street in the area of the Wheat City Golf Course was originally brought forward by Councillor Glen Parker this past June and was referred back to administration for review.
- Precipitated by a recent change in the provincial property assessment process, Council approved a pair of by-laws that would exempt the Commonwealth Air Training Plan Museum and the Provincial Exhibition of Manitoba from paying municipal property taxes on lands they lease from the City and the Keystone Centre, respectively, and further, to grant back the municipal property taxes owing by these two organizations that had been levied following the change in provincial assessment process.

Medical marijuana is legal in 20 states and the District of Columbia, but there are still use cases that are very controversial, like medical marijuana for children. Some claim it's a wonder drug for epilepsy, severe autism, and even to quell the harsh side effects of chemotherapy, while others decry pumping marijuana into still-growing bodies. We went to the small town of Pendleton, Oregon, where medical marijuana is legal, to visit Mykayla Comstock, an eight-year-old leukemia patient who takes massive amounts of weed to treat her illness. Her family, and many people we met along the way, believe not only in the palliative aspects of the drug, but also in marijuana's curative effect—that pot can literally shrink tumors.

Abraham Sofaer: Effective Policy Toward Iran (6/27/12)
Abraham Sofaer, Hoover Institution Senior Fellow: Effective Policy Toward Iran
Abraham D. Sofaer, George P. Shultz Senior Fellow in Foreign Policy and National Security Affairs, Hoover Institution; Legal Advisor, U.S. Department of State, 1985 to 1990; Author, Taking on Iran
George P. Shultz, Former U.S. Secretary of State; Distinguished Fellow, Hoover Institution - Moderator
A renowned expert in international law discusses legal options that the U.S. can pursue with Iran and how the U.S. can successfully use negotiation to convince Iran to give up any intention to develop nuclear weapons. It makes sense now, Sofaer posits, before Iran has shown both the abilities and the intention to develop nuclear weapons, for the U.S. to stop projecting weakness by indulging the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps' illegal conduct, and to start utilizing any opportunity that greater strength provides to negotiate professionally and consistently.
