A Summer on Nantucket MA | USA
See the island of Nantucket through our eyes! Spending the summer in Nantucket is a dream. From the minute you arrive and see the famous Brant point lighthouse, you'll fall in love. Our trip takes us all over the island by bicycle including steps beach, Cisco brewers, Bartlett's farm for lobster rolls, Sconsett, Madaket, plus much more. One of the best trips we've ever taken and I know we'll be back someday.

NANTUCKET, MA- Memorial Service for Missing Boater Jon Hemingway (03-26-10)
A memorial for Jon Hemingway will be held at Brant Point at 2 p.m. Friday, followed immediately by a celebration of his life at the Chicken Box. Parking will be limited at Brant Point, and those who wish to attend are encouraged to car pool, walk or bike to the beach.
Hemingway, 36, a Nantucket landscaper, disappeared at sea last Wednesday night in a bizarre boating accident in Nantucket Sound, leaving his wife and two daughters sleeping in the cabin of their 22-foot powerboat, which began spiraling erratically nine miles north of Nantucket before grounding near Steps Beach Thursday morning.
Family: No mystery to missing boaterHemingway's connection to the sea was the defining trait that his friends and family recalled as they offered their remembrances of him over the past week.
Hemingway, who owned the island landscaping company HemingwayScapes, Inc., with his wife, Katie, could be found most often on his boat, heading out of Hither Creek in Madaket to go lobstering, scalloping, tuna fishing or to his favorite spot on Tuckernuck Island, where he was a caretaker for a property.
He was more comfortable on the boat than he was on the Earth, said Katie Hemingway. He was like that from the moment I met him. Our first date was on a boat. He took me striper fishing, and he was shocked that I got a fish and no one else did.
Every moment of our life together, she recalled, the boat and the ocean were huge draws for him. That's where his passion is.

SUMMARY
=======
This is a list of all lighthouses in the U.S. state of Massachusetts as identified by the United States Coast Guard. Enumeration of the lighthouses in this state is complicated by the number of multiple tower stations and replacement of older towers, with the Brant Point Light station having had nine towers, two of which survive. At present there are forty-seven active towers, of which eleven are privately maintained; thirteen are standing but inactive, seven have been replaced with skeleton towers, thirteen have been destroyed or removed, and one tower has been moved to another state. The oldest station, Boston Light, established in 1716, was the first lighthouse built in the colonies, and the current tower at that station, built in 1783, is the oldest survivor in the state and the second oldest in the nation, and was the last lighthouse automated in the United States. The last station established was at the Buzzards Bay Entrance Light in 1961 (since replaced by an automated light on a steel tripod), but in 1986 the 1818 Great Point Light was rebuilt and relit, making it the last tower constructed in the state. The tallest towers in the state are the two Cape Ann Light towers, but the highest focal plane is at the Hospital Point Range Rear Light, which is located in the steeple of the First Baptist Church of Beverly.A number of inactivated Massachusetts lights have met with unusual fates. The Three Sisters of Nauset were sold off to separate private buyers before being purchased by the National Park Service and moved back near their original site. Range lights in Nantucket and Hyannis were incorporated into private dwellings, the former housing the Gilbreth family of Cheaper by the Dozen fame. The Point Gammon Light was converted into an observation tower for birdwatching.
If not otherwise noted, focal height and coordinates are taken from the United States Coast Guard Light List, while location and dates of activation, automation, and deactivation are taken from the United States Coast Guard Historical information site for lighthouses.
Sankaty Head Lighthouse
Sankaty Head Light is located on the island of Nantucket in the quaint town of Siasconset. It was one of the first lighthouses in the United States to receive a Fresnel lens. The views from this spot are spectacular and should be on every vacationer's list of spots to visit when touring the island!

Nantucket's North Shore
Nantucket Island is a crescent of sand, the eroding terminal moraine of a long-ago glacier. It faces on two bodies of water: the Atlantic Ocean and Nantucket Sound. The island's east and south shores are consumed by ocean surf—sometimes gentle, often mighty.
In her latest book, Nantucket's North Shore: A Neighborhood History, Francis Ruley Kartunnen tells the story of Nantucket's North Shore, an island neighborhood that has been inhabited continuously for three and a half centuries. Illustrated with over 200 photographs from the archives of the Nantucket Historical Association and from local photographer Alan Reinhard, these images bring the story to life. You'll meet the colorful island people who lived on the North Shore, see the houses where they lived, learn how they worked and played.
The neighborhood had its start several miles west of where it has ended up, and has experienced waves of change in the lives and circumstances of its residents. Throughout its evolution, its geography has remained and old layers still show through the accretions of time.
The story moves in both time and space as the English settlement shifted westward along the island's north shore, pausing for awhile at the Capaum/Wannacomet area and finally coming to rest at what was then called the Great Harbor. During that progress, a town center was created and then abandoned; buildings were moved to new locations and burial grounds were left behind.
Eventually the North Shore neighborhood stabilized in a triangle formed by three main thoroughfares: West Chester Street, Cliff Road, and North Liberty Street. Relics of Island history stand all along the edges of this triangle.
The book opens on the shore of Madaket Harbor in 2010 with the installation of a monument commemorating a meeting between Nantucket's native Wampanoag Tribe and the first English settlers. Had the Wampanoags not helped to sustain that tiny group, they would not have survived the winter. As King Phillip's War raged on the mainland in the 1670's, Nantucket's Wampanoag Tribe and the English settlers lived together without armed conflict.
Adding flavor to the story, Fran incorporates old Nantucket recipes passed down through generations to show the simplicity of life on the Island. Recipes such as Blackberry Grunt, Nantucket Corn Pudding and Creamed Finnan Haddie are sprinkled thoughout and can be adapted in the modern kitchen.
Nantucket's North Shore, A Neighborhood History is another volume in Spinner Publications effort to document and preserve the history of Nantucket Island and it's people.
