Braxton Brewing celebrating 4th anniversary with rooftop bar opening, $5 million expansion
COVINGTON, Ky. (WKRC) - A Northern Kentucky brewery that has attained national recognition is celebrating their fourth anniversary this month by opening their rooftop bar and by announcing some major plans for development and expansion.
The brewery's 5,000-square foot rooftop bar is set to open on July 20. Braxton Brewing will be hosting a Rooftop Grand Opening at the location in Covington on that day starting at noon and ending at 11p.m.
The rooftop deck will offer guests both an indoor and outdoor experience where they can enjoy Braxton’s renowned craft beer and the views of Covington and Cincinnati, said a release from Braxton Brewing.
The release details what guests can expect at the anniversary party:
The Four Year Anniversary Party invites guests to peruse each floor of the Braxton Brewing Co. Taproom, in celebration of the company’s continued success. All three floors of the brewery will be activated to showcase unique sponsorships, package releases, VIVE Hard Seltzer, and the grand opening of the Rooftop. The brewery is also set to release a special limited-release beer on July 20th called “Yesterday’s Headlines Vol. 4”. This beer commemorates four years of headlines and will honor a year of change for Braxton. The 16 oz. can 4-packs of Yesterday’s Headlines will be available for purchase during the anniversary party at $12.99 per four-pack, as well as presale leading up to the party.
“The past four years have been the ride of a lifetime. We’ve built a brewery focused on innovation and approachability, without compromising who we are,” said Jake Rouse, CEO and Co-Founder of Braxton Brewing Company. “The addition of a rooftop bar at headquarters in Covington will take Braxton to new heights, and we can’t wait to share this experience with you on July 20th!”
Braxton Brewing also announced a $5 million expansion, which they say will help Braxton reach even more craft beer lovers and will also support the community of Covington at large.
The expansion will increase production capacity, which the company says will allow them to produce up to 30,000 barrels and ultimately serve the rest of the state of Tennessee and Ohio.
Covington was Braxton’s first home. While this expansion to the brewery’s headquarters cements the city as Braxton’s forever home, it also challenges industry standards. From Braxton’s establishment, it was a brewery intended to make a material impact on a very fast-growing industry. The story of Braxton Brewing Co. is a familiar one. Much like the American Dream, their commitment to a fast-paced, sustained growth is what sets the brand apart. With that in mind, the Braxton Brewing Co. team carefully considered where it wanted to take its success in 2019, said Braxton Brewing in the release.
Learning Curve Episode 001: Braxton Brewing
Meet Braxton Brewing: a family-run brewery founded in Covington, KY by two brothers, Evan and Jacob Rouse, their father, Greg Rouse, and one insanely experienced brewmaster, Richard Dubé.
Conceived in a garage, Braxton Brewing was born out of the simple desire to make great beer for a local marketplace. But anyone who has the chance to spend even a few hours with the Braxton founders will notice one common trait: all four partners are deeply passionate about the business of beer and share an entrepreneurial obsession that not only bonds them together, but drives them each to learn more about their craft.
It was that desire to perfect every facet of their business that helped the company emerge victorious at our Startup Brewery Challenge, held in June, and it’s a defining characteristic of what continues to drive them today.
Behind Brewmaster Richard Dubé — who has more than 34 years of brewing experience at companies like Molson, Labatt and Boston Beer — Braxton impressed our Startup Brewery Challenge judges and earned an all-expenses paid trip to Portland, Ore. to brew with, and learn from, the team at Craft Brew Alliance.
Brewbound followed the Braxton team to the Pacific Northwest, to document, on film, what it’s like for a group of scrappy startup brewers to be granted an all-access pass inside one of the country’s largest craft beer outfits.
In episode 001 of Brewbound’s new documentary series, viewers will be introduced to the Braxton crew and get a taste of the intense, three-day learning experience awarded to winners of the Startup Brewery Challenge.
This is Learning Curve 001.

New rules could boost Ky. alcohol sales, tourism
NEWPORT, Ky. (Meghan Mongillo) - New rules on bourbon and beer in Kentucky could boost alcohol sales and tourism to the state.
Senate Bill 11 is sitting on the governor's desk waiting for his signature, and northern Kentucky establishments are already raising a glass to the changes.
New Riff's Distilling in Newport has a new tasting bar. The reason it's new is because Kentucky's Senate Bill 11 will allow it to operate like a regular bar once they get a by the drink license.
Just like you have in Napa Valley and Sonoma, people can drop in and try one of their bourbon cocktails and taste products for a small fee. This would likely boost tourism in Kentucky as well.
Before, only people who bought a ticket and took a tour could taste.
The most important change for New Riff is in the event center. They'll soon be able to use it as a cash bar.
You can imagine [that] corporations want to have the attendees pay, said Ken LewisSo it opens a whole range of opportunities in our beautiful event center. )
That income from the event center is very important, especially because New Riff is a young distillery. Although they make gin in-house and sell other bourbon, they are still waiting for their bourbon to age.
Senate Bill 11 also helps out Kentucky Breweries, said Braxton Brewery CEO, Jake Rouse. Here at Braxton and other breweries around the state, it'll allow them to make twice as much.
Braxton Brewery in Covington just celebrated one year of being in business, so they're only on pace to make about 10,000 barrels. But when they grow larger, there's no longer a 25,000 barrel cap. Plus they can set up at small events, like farmer's markets, without having to go through a distributor.
We anticipate going up to 50,000 barrels. It's going to take some time no doubt, but we are really excited about the opportunity, said Rouse.
Bottom line, Kentucky breweries and distilleries are getting ready.
Governor Matt Bevin is expected to sign the new law, which should take effect in July.
It'll happy hour in Kentucky very soon.

Maryland’s Flying Dog Brewery Hopes to Release Cannabis-Infused Beer
Pending approval from the Maryland Medical Cannabis Commission, Flying Dog Brewery and Green Leaf Medical Cannabis plan to release Hop Chronic IPA, the state of Maryland’s first THC-infused non-alcoholic beer.
The two Frederick, Maryland-based companies announced today that they intend to make Hop Chronic available to the state’s medical cannabis patients as an alternative to smoking or vaping as early as this summer.
Flying Dog CEO Jim Caruso stated, “For people who don’t want to smoke, don’t want to vape, there’s no path of experiencing the therapeutic benefits,” “It feels good to be a part of creating a delicious IPA where people who want to experience cannabis that way can do that.”
However, Flying Dog and Green Leaf face a potential regulatory roadblock as the Maryland Medical Cannabis Commission has yet to allow companies to produce or sell edible cannabis products.
Nevertheless, Caruso stated that he’s optimistic the product will be approved since similar offerings have already received the go ahead in other states, like Colorado, where Ceria, Inc. founder and Blue Moon creator Keith Villa launched a similar product in December.
If approved, Flying Dog would join a number of beer manufacturers that have already entered the cannabis space. Large beer companies such as Anheuser-Busch InBev (Tilray), Constellation Brands (Canopy Growth) and Molson Coors (Hexo) have each struck partnerships with Canadian cannabis companies. Other U.S. beer manufacturers, including Heineken-owned Lagunitas and Craft Brew Alliance (31.4 percent owned by A-B InBev), have experimented or explored the possibility of THC- and CBD-infused beverages.
Ballast Point Sets Opening Date for Downtown Disney Taproom
A year after announcing plans to open a taproom in Anaheim’s downtown Disney district at the Disneyland Resort, San Diego’s Ballast Point’s brewpub has set an opening date of Wednesday, January 16.
The Constellation Brands-owned craft brewery said the new taproom will feature a 3-barrel brewing system and offer more than 50 styles of Ballast Point beer across 100 tap lines.
Constellation Brands craft and specialty president Ben Dollard said, via a press release. “This new location also gives our passionate brewing and culinary teams the perfect place to test new and inventive offerings, as we welcome longtime Ballast Point fans and introduce new guests to our brand,” The Disney taproom is Ballast Point’s ninth in the U.S.
Braxton Brewing Announces $5 Million Expansion
Kentucky’s Braxton Brewing Company has embarked on a $5 million expansion that will include the purchase of the building where its brewery is currently situated, as well as the construction of a rooftop bar and the installation of a new canning line.
Braxton co-founder and CEO Jake Rouse said the construction of the new 5,000 sq. ft. rooftop bar would cost about $1.5 million.
The craft beer maker, which launched in 2015, will also spend approximately $2 million to acquire the Covington, Kentucky, property where the brewery is located, and another $1.5 million to expand production capabilities.
According to Rouse, Braxton made about 17,000 barrels of beer in 2018, up from 11,500 in 2017. The company expects to produce upwards of 25,000 barrels in 2019 but will have the capacity to make 30,000 barrels.
In late December, Braxton announced the launch of Vive Hard Seltzer. The product will be sold in 12 oz. slim cans, which led the company to invest in a new canning line capable of filling those packages.
In addition to the Vive Hard Seltzer line, Braxton recently launched a new year-round New England-style IPA, called Tropic Flare. Four-packs of 12 oz. cans sell for a suggested retail price of $9.99.

Controversial billboard message about Brent Spence changed
COVINGTON, Ky. (Joe Webb) -- Kentucky's transportation chief called the billboard along northbound I-75, misleading.
The electronic sign read Caution, dangerous bridge ahead, and touted the website for the group that supports tolls to pay for a new Brent Spence Bridge. It's just the latest shot fired in a war of words between the two sides.
The sign was taken down by 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 5. It was on the electronic billboard near the 12th Street exit and sent a clear message to the 70-80,000 drivers who travel northbound 75 through there every day. But the message, for now, is gone.
Toll supporters said the sign stated a simple fact. Toll opponents cried foul.
Joe Meyer with NKY United said, The fact that they've used the same colors as official signs, it creates the image of being an official announcement. It creates confusion.
Kentucky's transportation secretary, mike Hancock, agreed. Through a spokesperson he called the sign misleading and was, concerned it would be perceived as official.
Matt Davis of Build Our New Bridge Now Coalition said, I don't think it was misleading. It was a statement of fact. The secretary shares our view that we need to build a new bridge faster. But it's a statement of fact.
Toll opponents asked that it be taken down and by 10:30 a.m. it had been replaced with a new message in red, white and blue that said, This traffic is wasting your time and money. The Build Our New Bridge Now coalition said it accomplished the goal of getting the message on drivers' radar. They insist they didn't take it down under pressure.
Dangerous or not, the Brent Spence Bridge is functionally obsolete and carries twice the traffic it was designed for. The Build Our New Bridge Now coalition said it will have several messages that will rotate on the sign. It will also use other media to get out the message. The group would not say if the original black and yellow message will be re-appear.
Regardless, the group stirred up things and got a lot of free publicity so that original message has now been seen by a lot of people who never got anywhere near the sign.
The Brent Spence Bridge project is estimated to cost $2.6 billion. Both Kentucky and Ohio's governors support using tolls to help pay for a new bridge but Kentucky's general assembly has not yet approved legislation that would allow tolling on a new bridge.

Young Heirlooms - Over and Over | WCPO Lounge Acts
Young Heirlooms perform live for WCPO Lounge Acts. The folk/Americana group performs Over and Over from their new album titled The Hammer.
--
The fates aligned for local songsmiths Kelly Fine and Chris Robinson at a Dayton music festival in 2010.
Robinson sat in for a friend and fellow musician who couldn't make it to the show. His sound caught Fine's attention -- and vice versa. The duo started writing together the very next day.
Seven years and four additional bandmates later, Young Heirlooms is dropping its new, full-length album The Hammer at a release show Friday night at the Woodward Theater.
A quote attributed to legendary American writer Mark Twain inspired this folksy, Americana band's writers as they penned the album's lead single, Bury Me (With My Hammer).
The two most important days in your life are the day you were born and the day you find out why, the aphorism goes.
Unfortunately, that why is not always easy, and Fine and Robinson say the song represents the abrasive romance that can follow once you embrace your true life's passion.
We've come to realize in working together that this is what we feel called to do. This is the reason we were born, Fine said. I'm going to be using my 'hammer' every single day working toward my craft ... doing what I love with the people that I love, so you might as well just bury me with my hammer because it's going to be in use for a while.
Young Heirlooms aims to take listeners back with nostalgic writing based on their family histories, personal experiences and adventures on the road.
This isn’t the kind of alternative folk pop meant for lattes and wool hats -- it's legitimate artistry, gushes music blog 50 Third and 3rd. With vintage instrumentation such as a pedal steel and upright bass, the angelic vocal performances are blended and elevated perfectly.
Fine's transition to folk storytelling from a more poplike sound came during a summer spent working at teen camps and nursing homes in the hills around Salyersville, Kentucky.
The only radio we had access to was all kind of varieties of country and western and folk and Appalachian music, Fine said. Once I was down there, I became inspired by these different ideas and concepts about how to craft your story.
Cincinnati's own Soul Step Records featured Young Heirlooms in its Brewers Series this August, releasing the album's lead single on 7-inch vinyl at a free show at Covington's Braxton Brewing (which concocted a special version of its Storm ale for the occasion).
The single's B-side was an intriguing cover of Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young's Ohio, originally written to protest the Kent State shooting that killed four students in 1970 up north. It's a song whose lyrics quite unfortunately feel fresh for a new generation of political unrest in places like Ferguson, Missouri and Charlottesville, Virginia.
With the climate and the way things are going it felt revitalized -- new, again, said pedal steel guitarist Steve Hauke. When you really listen to the song, when you pay attention, it's something that we feel now.
And the Queen City is feeling Young Heirlooms' sound, as the group has been nominated for Cincinnati Entertainment Awards for this year's best folk/Americana band and best live act.
Should they win, it wouldn't be the group's first. They say they won best band not nominated for another category several years back.
We wrote ourself in, and our people voted, Robinson said.
Alongside Fine and Robinson's vocals, mandolin and guitar, Young Heirlooms is: Laura Bock (vocals, mandolin), Kyle Elkins (upright, electric bass), Hauke (pedal steel, lap steel guitar) and Charles Christopher Alley (drums).
--
Young Heirlooms' WCPO Lounge Acts session was recorded on October 18, 2017 in the WCPO Digital Lounge in Cincinnati, OH.
WCPO Lounge Acts features intimate in-studio performances and interviews from outstanding musical artists.
