DESCRIPTIVE NARRATIVE
We are cycling down stream along the bicycle trail / Shared Use footpath, beginning at Holbrooks Road, and travelling past the Findon Road / Rowells Rd. Bridge, (Keele Bridge), and along the Breakout Creek Embankments, (which keep the Torrens floodwaters in the main Channel), to Tapleys Hill Rd. Bridge. At this corner, the adjacent Apex Park has Storm Water Treatment Wetlands, Settling Ponds, and a Storm Water Pumping Station, to pump treated storm water from settling ponds and low lying areas, up into the River Torrens' Outlet, Breakout Creek. With Gulf St Vincent in the distant view, we see Walkers, Horse Paddocks, Coastal Vegetation, Estuarine Vegetation, cyclists, and over Military Road, near the Bridge, a Paved Footpath, leads to Beach Access, fencing with Hand Rails, and the Adelaide Shore, at West Beach. Fishers, Tourists, and a Pelican are at the River Mouth, where there is a Concrete Sea Wall / Weir, Signage, Wind Erosion Fencing, Sea Birds, and small Surf in the distance. Sand Dunes with Dunal Vegetation flank a long Coastal Trail / Path, seen here at the river outlet, and which runs both north and South from this point, parallel to the Sea Shore and Beach Houses, From Northaven to Seacliff. Before 'development', the Torrens River had no river mouth, but emptied into a vast wetland system behind the coastal dunes. This wetland was navigable by canoe from the Port Adelaide channel, to the Sturt River outlet, near Glenelg. Almost all of the natural wetlands and dune systems have been destroyed by housing.
