Hiking Breaks Interstate Park
Breaks Interstate Park is a bi-state state park located in southeastern Kentucky and southwestern Virginia in the Jefferson National Forest at the northeastern terminus of Pine Mountain. It is administered by the states of Virginia and Kentucky and is one of several interstate parks in the United States.
The Breaks, also referred as the Grand Canyon of the South, is the deepest gorge east of the Mississippi River, through which the Russell Fork river and Clinchfield Railroad (now the CSX Transportation Kingsport Subdivision) run. It is accessed via Virginia State Route 80, between Haysi, Virginia and Elkhorn City, Kentucky, and passes through the community of Breaks, Virginia east of the park.
American frontiersman Daniel Boone is credited with being the first person of European descent to discover the Breaks, which he first saw in 1767.
Breaks Interstate Park is located about 5 miles (8 km) east of Elkhorn City, Kentucky. The park covers 4,500 acres (1,800 ha). The park's main feature, Breaks Canyon, is five miles long and ranges from 830 to 1,600 feet (250 to 490 m) deep. The canyon was formed by the Russell Fork river through millions of years of erosion.

Coalfield Express Construction at Breaks, Virginia
Dickenson County, Virginia. This community is located in the extreme northwest portion of the county, very close to Buchanan County, Virginia and Pike County, Kentucky. Here is more info:
U.S. Route 121 is a proposed highway designated as the Coalfields Expressway, a four-lane highway stretching from Beckley, West Virginia to Pound, Virginia, approximately 62 miles (100 km) in length. It is designed to connect Interstate 77/Interstate 64 in West Virginia near Beckley to U.S. Route 23 in Wise County, Virginia at Pound. While U.S. 121 will not connect directly to U.S. Route 21, it will intersect at the latter road's original alignment, now a part of I-77
The Coalfields Expressway will depart from an expanded Interstate 64/Interstate 77 interchange and travel southwest through depressed areas of West Virginia to U.S. Route 23 in Wise County, Virginia at Pound. The roadways US 121 will replace are deficient in the fact that the existing roadways have limited passing opportunities, steep grades, and low design speeds. The expressway will generally follow West Virginia Route 16 through Raleigh and Wyoming Counties, West Virginia Route 83 in McDowell County, and State Route 83 in Buchanan County, Virginia to U.S. 23 in Pound.
West Virginia:
Construction started in 1999 with a three-level diamond interchange near Welch in western West Virginia. This will facilate traffic going between the King Coal Highway/Interstate 73/Interstate 74 and the Coalfields Expressway (US 121). Grading work was completed in 2003, but the interchange remains incomplete as of 2010.
Further eastward, work is continuing on a segment of the Expressway in the vicinity of Sophia and Crab Orchard near Beckley totaling 3.5 miles (5.6 km). Grading and preliminary paving operations have been completed, as well as the gradings and bridge construction for a diamond interchange for West Virginia Route 54 and a bridge over West Virginia Route 16. In November 2004, a contract was awarded for paving operations at a cost of $11.5 million from Surveyor Creek Road to the West Virginia Route 16 interchange. With this segment of the Expressway completed, a new tie-in will be complete from Surveyor Creek Road to five-lane West Virginia Route 16, as well as an interchange with West Virginia Route 54.
Two contracts totaling $22.2 million are currently under construction. One projects involves grading and drainage operations on 2.57 miles (4.14 km) of US 121 from Big Ridge to Surveyor Creek Road that involves nearly five million cubic yards of excavation.
In the fall of 2013, two contracts will be awarded to grade and drain an additional 2 miles of US 121 near Helen, WV. It is one of four projects on the horizon to extend the road to Mullens, WV. As of June 2013, 6.9 miles of US 121 is open to traffic in West Virginia.
Virginia:
In Virginia, the Coalfields Expressway will run for 55 miles (89 km), following Virginia Route 83 from the West Virginia border to U.S. Highway 23 in Pound. Near the Grundy - Vansant area, U.S. Route 460 will become a new four-lane highway connecting the Coalfields Expressway with Breaks Interstate Park at the Virginia / Kentucky border and Elkhorn City, Kentucky.

31 Acres Along Interstate
Tremendous Commercial Development Opportunity along I-77/I-81 corridor near Wytheville, VA. This 31 acre parcel is just off Exit 77 near VA State Police Headquarters and within sight of Wythe County's Exposition Center development under construction. With over 60,000 vehicles passing per day on the overlap of 2 interstates, this parcel could be developed into hotel, restaurant, travel service, and retail applications or provide government agencies with a large service footprint in the region. This property has many advantages over properties on the south side of the interstate including less traffic congestion, larger parcel size and visibility benefits. Existing estate residence was built in 1949 and provides a great vantage point over the property if only partial development is desired. Read Mountain Preserve at Roanoke, Virginia
Hiking Buzzards Rocks at Read Mountain Preserve in Roanoke, Virginia
Located just outside of the City of Roanoke, Virginia, the Read Mountain Preserve is one of the largest public parks managed by Roanoke County Parks and Recreation. The 243 acres located on Read Mountain are preserved through a public-private partnership. The preserve is mostly forested and contains about 5 miles of hiking trails. The highlight of a visit to Read Mountain is the hike up to Buzzards Rocks, a large rock formation located near the summit of the mountain. The rocks offer some excellent views out over parts of Roanoke City as well as the mountains to the south and west that rim the Roanoke Valley. The very popular McAfee Knob is visible from the rocks. The trails in the preserve are easy to follow, maintained, and well signed. The terrain is mostly steep and rocky. The trail system is built primarily on the east facing slope of the mountain. The view from Buzzards Rocks is mainly towards the southwest.
In this video, I hike the moderate Buzzards Rock Trail up the mountain to the rock overlook, passing some small waterfalls and numerous rock formations on the way up. After enjoying the views from Buzzards Rocks, I return back to the parking via the more strenuous Crossover Trail and parts of the Rocky Way Trail, again with many awesome rock formations along the trails. The total round trip hike was approximately 4 miles with nearly 1000 feet of elevation gain. Thanks for watching!
