Batanes Travel Guide I Solo Female Travel
BATANES TRAVEL GUIDE
TRAVEL DATES:
December 4, 2017 – December 11, 2017 (Yes! Naabutan ko si Miss Universe 2017 doon.)
MY TOTAL EXPENSES:
Approximately P20, 568
This is just based on my 7D/7N trip to Batanes. It’s possible to be more or even less depending on your air tickets, food preference, tour preference. Please read further to find out more ????
AIRFARE WITH SKYJET AIR:
P8723 (booked 1 month before and with 20% BDO Bank discount)
TOURISM FEE UPON ARRIVAL IN BASCO:
P350 with Batanes Map
ACCOMMODATION IN BASCO:
I stayed at 2 different hometels for comparison. When I did a research before going there, two hometels were always being mentioned - Marfel’s Lodge (they have several hometels and Mac Homestay was available that time where their main office is) and Vatan Inn. Both were very clean and their staff were really really nice and efficient.
Mac Homestay – P1500 for 3 nights (no breakfast but with cable TV & they provide soap, tissue, towel, refillable drinking water, airport pick-up, you’re allowed to use their kitchen to cook and my favorite spot there was their veranda at the 2nd floor which is overlooking Mt. Iraya)
Vatan Inn – P1200 for 3 nights (with breakfast, refillable drinking water, towel, airport pick-up, you’re allowed to use their kitchen to cook but no TV and toiletries. That time the heater on their shower was not working but they have a big water bucket and a portable heater for the pail)
ACCOMMODATION IN SABTANG (optional because most tours were only day tours in Sabtang):
Nanay Adela’s Lighthouse – P500 (no breakfast, but with refillable drinking water, cable TV if you’re staying at the main house, towel)
Few steps from the lighthouse is a beautiful lagoon where you can go for dip. It felt like an exclusive beach because non-guests will have a hard time going there. And I was told if the sky is clear at night, stargazing is amazing there. Just beware of goats’ poop around the vicinity though. haha
TOURS:
Option 1 (I took this)
P4800 / pax for 3 days tour with Chanpan Tours (P4800 was their low season rate, regular rate is P5000)
Inclusions: North Batan Tour, South Batan Tour, Sabtang Tour, air-conditioned van, 3 days lunch, all registration and environmental fees, round trip boat fares to Sabtang, local guide
Here’s a quick link of their sample itinerary which I also showed in the video -
Option 2
P 4000 for a 3 Day Tricycle Tour good for 2 pax but sometimes 3 pax. It will come out as P2000 / pax
OR
P1000 / tricycle – North Batan Tour
P1500 / tricycle – South Batan Tour
P1500 / tricycle– Sabtang Tour
Not Included: lunch for 3 days, Sabtang boat fare – P200 RT/pax, Sabtang tourism fee - P200/pax
Option 3
Super DIY – this means you can request for a tricycle by sending an SMS or calling Basco’s tricycle operator (yes, they’re like Uber or Grab) to take you to a specific attraction in Batanes. Rates varies depending on your destination. But don’t expect that your driver is also your tour guide.
FOOD:
This really depends on you. There are several canteens or “karinderia” with meals costing only P100 or less (plain rice and viand). There are much expensive restaurants within Basco and meals ranging from P300 above.
If you want to try an authentic Batanes meal, I would suggest you to try Vunong’s Dinnette for P300 / set meal. The servings are huge and really great tasting! Advanced reservation is a must.
PASALUBONG
As for me I bought 2 t-shirts (P180/t-shirt), refrigerator magnet (P50/pc) and Arius wine (P350/ bottle in Sabtang pero P250 lang daw sa Basco). I also liked the seaweed chips sour cream flavor for P35/pack.
BICYCLE RENTAL IN BASCO:
P50/hour for the Japanese bike
CONTACT NUMBERS:

Breathtaking Batanes: North Batan Island Tour | Batanes | Philippines | We.Are.Wanderful
MARCH 22, 2015: It has been in our bucket list—Marie and I—for more than a decade now. Back then it was very difficult to go to Batanes because there were only 1 or 2 flights per week, and you will have to go via Tuguegarao, using very small airplanes (4 to 10 seaters). Now it is so much easier (although not necessarily less expensive) to go to Batanes with multiple daily trips from Manila on bigger and much safer turbo-prop airplanes via Philippine Airlines and SkyJet Airlines.
So it was a dream come true for us to finally get to visit Batanes this year (2015). That we got to bring our kids with us has been a double blessing.
This is a short slideshow video of our photos from our first day in Batanes during which we did the NORTH BATAN ISLAND TOUR. Enjoy watching.

Batanes Island Philippines: Guide to Batan, Sabtang & Itbayat (Tourism Video)
Fall in love with the northernmost islands of the Philippines not only for its beauty but also with its cultural heritage, well-preserved villages, yummy Ivatan cuisine, and most of all the islands’ proud Ivatan people.
BATANES: Awesome Guide to Batanes Isles: Batan, Sabtang & Itbayat!

Take a timeless journey through the Philippines last frontier!
We love Batanes for its picturesque landscapes and breathtaking views. Imagine green grasslands as far as your eyes can see, towering limestone cliffs, crystal clear waters, and beautiful views that look straight from a scene of Lord of The Rings, Jurrasic Park, and Moana! It’s not hard to understand why Batanes is on every Filipino’s bucket!
Here’s our guide to Batanes’ top three islands- Basco, Sabtang, and Itbayat…
FACTS ABOUT BATANES:
• The province’s ettirety from landscape and seascape is protected by the government.
• The Islands of Basco and Sabtang were formed by a volcanic eruption while Itbayat was formed due to techtonic movements of the plate.
• The Ivatans are indegenous people protected by the IPRA Law 1997.
• The weather even on summer is cooler than the rest of the Philippines. The coolest months are March to December where temperature can fall as low as 10 degrees.
• Expect to pay cash all the time. Though Landbank and PNB atm’s are available in Basco.
BATAN NORTH TOUR:
Batanes, you take my breathe away!
A trip to Batanes is something you’ll have to do at least once in your lifetime. The country’s northernmost province is one of the most sought-after tourism frontiers, gifted with its unique blend of breathtaking scenery, natural beauty, and well-preserved culture!
North Batan consists of the whole of Basco–from the picturesque Valugan boulder beach, Vayang rolling hills, and Basco lighthouse, to the Mount Carmel Chapel, Fundacion Pacita, the Japanese tunnels, and a weather station with a 360 view of the island!
BATAN SOUTH TOUR:
We heard that the South Batan Tour was much more charming than that of North Batan. But how could that be, when we were already captured by the breathtaking landscapes of the North?!
South Batan is where you’ll find everything to love about Batanes–from the marvelous historical man-made structures, natural sceneries, and authentic Ivatan cuisine, down to taking part in the important cultural experience.
The South Batan Tour is a day tour covering the towns of Ivana, Mahatao, and Uyugan. The tour starts early in Mahatao and covers Chawa Viewdeck, San Jose Borromeo Church, Tayid Lighthouse, Diura fishing village, and Racuh a Payaman (Marlboro Country), then starts again after lunch to Imnajbu, Alapad, Uyugan Town, Ivana Town, Honesty Coffee Shop, and the oldest house in Basco.
SABTANG ISLAND TOUR:
Vast green grasslands as far as your eyes can see, towering limestone cliffs, crystal clear waters, and beautiful landscapes that look out of this world. With access to all of these and more, it’s not hard to see why Batanes is on every Filipino’s bucket list.
Sabtang Island is the southernmost municipality of Batanes and is the smallest of the three major islands, the others being Batan and Itbayat.
Read more: Sabtang Island, Batanes: Exploring the Best Heritage Island in the Philippines! (Photo Essay)
ITBAYAT ISLAND TOUR:
For first-time visitors, Itbayat Island may seem like a place suspended in time.
An island paradise barely touched by the unrelenting hand of modernization, Itbayat is one of the last regions of the Philippines where man has hardly left his mark on the environment.
It is a place that sometimes feels foreign and wild, yet at the same time, familiar and tame, a place of majestic rolling hills where wild horses roam freely, racing across open fields. It’s also a place forgotten by history, where vast cave systems hold the secrets to some of the Philippines earliest settlers.
Most importantly, it’s home to nearly 3,000 Ivatan—the original inhabitants of the island.
If you’re up for a real adventure and want to experience untouched nature, Itbayat is the perfect destination.
WHAT TO EAT:
Already captivated by the beauty of the northernmost tip of the Philippines, the magic of Batanes continues as we discover and experience its food! Find out how yummy authentic Ivatan dishes are–from freshly caught mahi-mahi, flying fish, and lobsters, to grass-fed cows, organic pork, root crops, and vegetables!
Ivatan-style cooking can be described as bland, using only salt, soy sauce, and vinegar as condiments. It’s not hard to see that local Ivatans like to maintain a very healthy lifestyle.
WHERE TO STAY:
Here are some suggestions on where to stay in Batanes. Whether it’s in the charming rooms of Fundacion Pacita, mid-range inns, or affordable homestays, you’ll surely find one that’ll suit your budget and specific needs!

Breathtaking Batanes: South Batan Island Tour | Batanes | Philippines | We.Are.Wanderful
MARCH 24, 2015—A 3-day tour of Batanes MUST include the following: a] North Batan Island Tour ( b] South Batan Island Tour (this video); and c] Sabtang Island Tour (video available soon). The 4th major island of Batanes, Itbayan, is just too far and will require at least two additional days to cover. It is also quite difficult to reach and, depending on the season, it may be too rough a ride for most tourists and can even be potentially risky. Anyway, this video is about our South Batan Tour which we actually covered in 2 days because the weather was not very good and we wanted to spend more time in some of the destinations, particularly the secluded place called Fountain of Youth which requires some trekking.
This is a short slideshow video presentation of our photos taken during our tour of South Batan island in Batanes. Enjoy watching.

Breathtaking Batanes: Our Trip to Sabtang Island | Batanes | Philippines | We.Are.Wanderful
Trip to Sabtang Island
Sabtang, Batanes | Philippines
MARCH 23, 2015—We visited the island municipality of Sabtang on the 2nd day of our Batanes Family Tour. Sabtang Island is to the south of Batan Island, where the capital town of Basco is located.
To go to Sabtang we have to ride a pump boat locally called a Faluwa from the Port of Ivana, some 4.5 kilometers south of Basco. The Faluwa is kind of unique because it has a wide body and rounded bottom, unlike the typical outrigger bancas I am familiar with and seen all around the country. It is kind of similar to the Sampans in HK in terms of its built and appearance.
The boat ride to Sabtang takes approximately 45 minutes. Before reaching the Port of Sabtang, which is by the way the single point of entry and exit to and from the island, the boat will pass through a section of the sea with huge waves. Some 6- to 20-foott waves in my estimation. It is kind of unnerving if it is your first time to experience it. The waves are so high at times you only see water all around you (when the boat is at the bottom of a trough). But it is nothing to be concerned about. All you need is observe the local passengers and you will know that this is nothing out of the ordinary (for them).
This is a short slideshow video presentation of our photos during our trip to Sabtang Island. Please check out our other Sabtang videos for some of the notable destinations we visited in the island. Enjoy watching.

Exploring Batanes Philippines (Basco, Batan, Sabtang)
For years, I've longed to visit the islands of Batanes. It has always been on top of my Philippine travel bucket list. That's why I told myself right after I quit my job in Dubai, I won't let this long break end without visiting Batanes.
Since I wanted a much relaxed vacation this time, I booked a 3 day tour with Chanpan Tours and Services and I'm glad I made the right choice to do so. They gave me the most unforgettable holiday in Batanes. Plus their tour guides are trained to give you those Instagram worthy photos at the picturesque Batanes.
