Brecon Mountain Railway Merthyr Tydfil South Wales Aug 2015
A journey along the Brecon Mountain Railway from Pant to Torpantau on the trackbed of the Brecon & Merthyr Railway. This is a 1 ft 11 3/4 gauge (603 mm) railway and on the day we visited our train was hauled by 4-6-2 Baldwin Locomotive No. 2, which was built for South Africa where it spent all of its working life. Following an accident in the 1970's it was sold to the BMR as scrap and was completely rebuilt by them.
Brecon Mountain Railway, April 2019
After my final night camping I begin my journey towards home. My first stop is the Brecon Mountain Railway. Arriving at the main station 'Pant', we take a look around the workshops before boarding our train. Due to maintenance taking place on the main service locomotive, the replacement, the 1908 built Jung 'Graf Schwerin-Löwitz' No. 99-3553 was unable to tackle the bank up to Torpantau, so we did turn back early at Dolygaer before our break at Pontsticill and the final climb back to Pant. This fact was advertised, and the unusual traction still attracted me to the railway.
The Brecon Mountain Railway runs for a total of 5 miles, from Pant, just above Merthyr Tydfil, into the Brecon Beacons, offering spectacular views and a wonderful journey.

Brecon Mountain Railway - Wales Trip 2017
Starting off my trip to Wales on Friday, 4th August I stopped en-route to the Brecon Mountain Railway for their 1030 departure, travelling from Pant (3 miles north of Merthyr Tydfil) and entering the breathtaking Brecon Beacons National Park to Pontsticill before climbing up to Torpantau, here we observe the locomotive run round before decending back to Pontsticill, where we have a look around the station and steam museum, before returning back to Pant as the rain begins to fall.

BRECON BEACONS NATIONAL PARK & MOUNTAIN RAILWAY | WALES - UK
BRECON BEACONS NATIONAL PARK & MOUNTAIN RAILWAY (WALES - UK)
The Brecon Beacons National Park was established in 1957. It was one of the first ten national parks to be created in Britain. The intention was to safeguard their beautiful, rough and dramatic landscapes, considered a priceless national asset.
Established in 1957, the Brecon Beacons National Park is the youngest of the three national parks in Wales. The other two Welsh national parks, Snowdonia and the Pembrokeshire Coast, were created earlier in the 1950s, along with important English national parks such as the Peak District, the Lake District and the Yorkshire Dales.
In 1965, the National Trust became the landowner of much of the common land in the Central Beacons, paving the way for the park’s development as a conservation area and tourist destination.
The National Park Authority later acquired other important tracts of land.
In 2000, the area around Blaenavon was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in recognition of its significance in the production of iron and coal in the 19th century.
In 2005, Fforest Fawr became the first UNESCO European Geopark in Wales and in 2013, the night sky above the Brecon Beacons was granted special protection when the park was designated an International Dark Sky Reserve.

Baldwin No1 Santa Teresa 2-6-2 Featured On The Brecon Mountain Railway Wednesday 3rd July 2019
While staying in Cwmdu a delightful village on the A479 near Crickhowell we decided to pay a visit to the Brecon Mountain Railway. We arrived just in time to buy some tickets and see the just restored Baldwin No 1 Santa Teresa'. Originally a 2-6-0 she is now a 2-6-2 and what a great job the BMR have done. This video follows is a journey from Pant to Torpantau where No 1 runs round the train and returns stopping at Pontsticill for a 35 min PN break. Great views of the Tef Fechan Reservoir can be had while having a cuppa and admiring the Baldwin simmering at the head of the five coach train. At the end of the video there is a clip of the 14:30 departure.

A Stay At The Heritage Park Hotel - The Rhondda, Visit Wales

The Rhondda Valley was once one of the world’s most important coal mining region. 53 collieries once dotted the blackened industrial landscape of the Rhondda valleys.
The Heritage Park Hotel is next to the Rhondda Heritage Park Mining Museum, the old site of the Lewis Merthyr coal mine.
The Heritage Park Hotel is in a good location if you want to explore Cardiff or the South Wales valleys, it is only 20 minutes from the M4 motorway and under 30 minutes from the centre of Cardiff.
When we stayed there many of the other guests were hikers touring the beautiful Welsh countryside, the hotel is also on the way to the Brecon Beacons National Park.

Brecon Mountain Railway
A narrow gauge line running 5 miles along part of the trackbed of the standard gauge Brecon and Merthyr Railway. It climbs from Pant to an elevation of 1313 feet at Torpantau. The B&MR was notorious for its fierce gradients, and the final section of our line is at 1:38, stopping just short of a tunnel which was the highest anywhere in Britain. Y ou may hear the loco working hard on the way up, but it is easier to see the gradient on the way down. Only the BMR's two most powerful locomotives can haul a train up the final stretch. The line affords spectacular views over the Brecon Beacons National Park and the Pontsticill and Pentwyn reservoirs.
The train runs non-stop on the ascent through Pontsticill and the closed station at Dolygaer to Torpantau. We stop on the descent for refreshment for engine and passengers.
Our locomotive was built by Baldwin of Philadelphia in 1897 as a 2-6-0 for work in Brazil, and over the years suffered two regaugings and a poor restoration. Now it has been massively rebuilt as a 2-6-2 by the BMR and only re-entered service in June this year.
If necessary, adjust to 1080HD.

Panniers on the Brecon & Merthyr - 1962
On 9th August 1962 the Brecon & Merthyr Railway was about to lose its passenger services (they were withdrawn in December) so this was a last opportunity to travel over the line. Our clip starts at the junction with the GWR's line through Risca to Ebbw Vale and we see Basseleg, Machen, Trethomas and Bedwas stations (also passing the colliery sidings between the latter two) from our Pannier-hauled train.

Brecon Mountain Railway 2015-09-14
Despite the bad weather there were already many passengers and tour groups waiting. The locomotive seemed so familiar. A Baldwin engine built in 1930 in Philadelphia / USA.
Here you can see as well what is the most important thing for the passengers on such a trip: From the total driving time of 90 minutes we made a break of about 1/2 hour in Ponsticill, where there is a museum and a coffee shop.
We tried to follow the railway line on the countryside. Fortunately we drive an all-terrain vehicle. In the pouring rain we reached the terminus station Torpantau 5 minutes before the train arrived.
