Copenhagen 1801 - 1807 - 2007
1801:
The naval Battle of Copenhagen (Danish: Slaget på Reden) was fought on April 2, 1801 by a British fleet under the command of Admiral Sir Hyde Parker, against a Dano-Norwegian fleet anchored just off Copenhagen. Vice-Admiral Horatio Nelson led the main attack. He famously disobeyed Parker's order to withdraw, destroying many of the Dano-Norwegian ships before Denmark-Norway could agree to a truce.
The battle was the result of multiple failures of diplomacy in the latter half of 1800 and the beginning of 1801 during the French Revolutionary Wars.
1807:
The Second Battle of Copenhagen, (16 August - 5 September 1807) was a British attack on Copenhagen, targeting the civilian population in order to seize the powerful Danish fleet.
There was concern in Britain that Napoleon might try to force Denmark to close the Baltic Sea to British ships, perhaps by marching French troops into Zealand.
British troops commanded by General Wellesley defeated weak Danish forces near the town of Køge, south of Copenhagen. Within a few days, Copenhagen was completely encircled. The Danes rejected British demands to surrender, so the British fleet under Admiral Gambier bombarded the city from 2 September to 5 September 1807.
The British fired 5,000 rounds into Copenhagen on the first night of bombardment, only 2,000 rounds into the city on the second night, and 7,000 rounds on the third night. More than 2,000 civilians were killed and 30% of the buildings were destroyed during the battle. The bombardment had included Congreve Rockets, which caused fires. On 5 September the Danes sued for peace and it was signed on 7 September. Denmark agreed to give up their navy and naval stores in return for Britain to leave Copenhagen within six weeks. On 21 October 1807, the British fleet left Copenhagen for England.
2007:
September 2 2007, was the the bicentenary of the bombardment of Copenhagen. Golden Days arranged a project weekend, September 1-2 2007 focusing on the fateful day 200 years ago.
The commemoration of the day offered a wide range of activities, city walks, talks and much more. All linked together in an evening event, based on events around the Frue Plads area - the historical centre of the bombardment of Copenhagen in 1807.
More than 90.000 visitors participated in the acitivities all over the city.
