Brest Hero City central railway station, Belarus
The first building of the Brest railway station was built by 1886 and opened on May 28 of this year in the presence of Emperor Alexander III .
It was built in the form of a medieval castle with four water towers. The station was equipped with water heating. In the halls for passengers of the 1st and 2nd classes the floors were parquet, for the 3rd class - wooden, in the outbuildings - asphalt. Soon the station became the first on the Russian railways, where electric lighting was installed - 160 light bulbs with 20 candles each appeared in the halls and on the platforms and 12 lanterns with 50 candles each lit up the station square.
In 1915, during the First World War , the station building was badly damaged during the retreat of the Russian troops. Polish authorities built a new building. Marshal Clement Voroshilov , who visited Brest in 1949, helped to decide on the reconstruction of the railway station, which was carried out in 1953-1957.
In 2007, more than 500 employees work at the station.

Belarus: Patriarch Kirill leads 'Brest Fortress Defence' commemoration ceremony
Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and all Rus' led a memorial ceremony at St. Nicholas Garrison Cathedral in the Brest Fortress in Belarus on Monday. The location was the scene of the 'Defence of Brest Fortress,' one of the first major battles on the eastern front during WWII.
Kirill's own uncle died defending the fortress against the Nazis. After the service, Patriarch Kirill also participated in the memorial meeting and addressed an estimated 12,000 people who travelled to Brest from Belarus, Russia and Ukraine, wishing them all peace and prosperity.

Changing the chassis of an international train
Trains running from Moscow to Beijing need to get their chassis changed at Erlien Station in north China’s Inner Mongolia because Mongolia and Russia use 1520-mm wide rail, while China uses 1435 mm of the standard rail. Mechanics work in minus 30-degree-Celsius temperatures to ensure the train can travel safely. Passengers can stay on the train while the chassis gets changed.

Lithuania starts the project of the electrification of the railroad section leading to a border with Belarus in order to shorten the journey between Vilnius and Minsk.
The ceremony of the start of construction was attended by Lithuanian Prime Minister Algirdas Butkevicius.
When the electrification of the New Kyviskes-Vilnius-Kena-state border with Belarus will be completed by March 2016, the journey time between Lithuanian and Belorussian capitals will be reduced by 30 minutes to 2 hours.
During the first stage of the project, a 28.6 kilometres section New Kyviskes-Vilnius-Kena-state border with Belarus will be electrified. By March 2016, the section will have more than 2,000 metal constructions.
Diesel trains going on the route Vilnius-Minsk will be gradually replaced with electric trains.
The prime minister says that cross-border services between Vilnius and Minsk are important not only for passenger transportation but also for freight transportation because the electric train trip costs are about 30 percent smaller than those by a diesel train, which is very important in enhancing Lithuania's competitiveness and attracting more cargo to Klaipeda Seaport from Eastern European and Asian countries.
Total project value is estimated at LTL 94 million (EUR 27.2 million).

Railways of the Caspian 2004
The Azerbaijan State Railway is owned by the government of that country. The system operates 1,822 miles of 4' 11 5/6 gauge network mostly electrified with 3000v DC. The system is vast and varied.
The railway was built in 1880 by the Russian Empire. Following the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991 its railway system broke up into national railway systems of various former Soviet republics from which the independent Republic of Azerbaijan and the Azerbaijan State Railway emerged.
I shot most of this footage and photographs about 15 miles south of Baku in 2003/4 when I worked there. Most of the material was shot along the main international line to Georgia from Baku.
I have include some photographs of the now dismantled tram system of Baku. I was very lucky to be there during its final year of operation.
There are three photos taken of the railways of Turkmenistan.

Stacja Żabinka na Białorusi / Zhabinka station in Belarus
Moje pierwsze w życiu spotkanie z kolejami krajów byłego ZSRR. Niewielka stacja Żabinka leżąca w Obwodzie Brzeskim, 20 kilometrów na wschód od Brześcia i kilka pociągów, jakie w przeciągu godzinki udało mi się tam złapać. Pierwszy jest odjazd pociągu pospiesznego, którym do Żabinki z Brześcia przyjechałem. Prowadził go potężny radziecki Diesel - TEP70. Kolejne dwa to przeloty pociągu ekspresowego oraz ruski Jamnik ze składem kontenerowym a stawkę zamyka mijanka dwóch typowych jednostek spalinowych obsługujących połączenia bardziej lokalne.
Sama stacja bardzo czysta i schludna, choć skromna. Miasteczko za stacją czyli tytułowa Żabinka liczy sobie około 13 tysięcy mieszkańców i więcej ma wspólnego z dużą wsią, niż z miastem. Wygląd centrum, sklepy, obiekty użyteczności publicznej itd. przypominają tam małe polskie miasteczko z lat 90' ubiegłego wieku - ot taki skromny białoruski klimacik.
