Cairns Creative Crawl: a pub crawl with a twist
Summary:
Cairns' creative communities are struggling to make a living from their work in a region dominated by nature tourism.
Last year almost 1.6 million visitors headed to the region to experience the Great Barrier Reef and the Daintree Rainforest.
In an attempt to connect with the larger community Cairns artists hold a pub-crawl with a twist. The Cairns Creative Crawl is an 'arty bus' tour of creative spaces aboard the city's notorious party bus.
Around 100 people hop aboard the open-topped red double-decker bus. The schedule for the Cairns Creative Crawl is tight. The crawlers visit six venues during the night and only stay at each for half an hour.
The Cairns Creative Crawl is one way in which artists are tackling underexposure in a region that has a small and transient population.
Creative Partners' Terri Golding-Clarke says: We don't want to see artists moving out of Cairns on a permanent basis. It would be ideal for artists if we could create as much industry for them and build cultural tourism.
The Cairns Creative Crawl began as a Cairns Festival initiative three years ago. It is now held four times throughout the year, but this is only the third time that time poor and foot sore art lovers have ridden the bus
The last stop is a regular event called Mix Grill'd organised by independent producer and media artist Nicholas Mills.
Nicholas Mills: Cairns has a much more colourful and interesting cultural fabric than the tourism brochures show you.
