Chattanooga Police Department Ranked 29 in the%2
Chattanooga crime rates still stand above the average crime rate across the nation. But tonight a new report is saying for the amount of money the Chattanooga Police Department spends to uphold the law, it's having a high success rate.
Jerel McElroy says the Chattanooga crime rate feels like it has changed drastically in the last few years.
When I used to live here, it was actually a lot lot worse that what I hear about it now, McElroy says.
According to city-data.com, from 2000 to 2011, the crime rate in Chattanooga was more than cut in half.
McElroy says, I do think as far as the Chattanooga police Department, they are doing an excellent job as far as keeping the crime rate down and it has improved.
Using the city police department's spending per capita and the city's most recent crime rates from 2011, an online finance company called WalletHub created a report that ranked Chattanooga Police 29th in the nation in terms of how efficiently it spends taxpayer dollars on that police protection.
Chattanooga resident, Tanner Watson says he feels safe when he's in downtown Chattanooga, and he attributes that to the police force.
Watson says, The police are very quick to react here. I've seen many times where they show up pretty quickly. We have bicycle cops, cameras, everything.
The study calculated the efficiency of 110 of the biggest U.S. city police departments. According to the report, Chattanooga has the 94th highest crime rate of those cities- but they only spent $349 dollars per person fighting it.
WalletHub says it is important to realize efficiency in this case is different from overall safety of the city.
Residents say there's only so much police can do in terms of preventing crime.
Watson says, I think if they are going to commit a crime they are going to commit it. A locked door is just to keep an honest person out. They are going to break in or do whatever they want to do either way.
The city that ranked with the highest police efficiency is Flint, MI, and Washington D.C. was put lowest on the list out of the one-hundred and ten.

Chattanooga Update - January 23, 2015
A 94-year-old judge has been arrested after police say he struck a good Samaritan with his car.
It all happened in Oak Ridge where Charles Smallwood helped the judge, William Lawrence Tunnell, get to his feet after he fell.
Smallwood tried to get Tunnell to remain at the scene until medics arrived. Then he stepped in front of Tunnell’s vehicle to prevent him from leaving.
That’s when Tunnell allegedly threatened to run him over, and then placed his vehicle in drive and struck Smallwood.
Smallwood was taken by ambulance to the University of Tennessee Medical Center. Tunnell is free on bond.

A new bill would make it illegal for passengers in a car to drink.
Tennessee Representative Jon Lundberg filed the legislation.
He says that if people are drinking alcohol in the car, most of the time the driver is participating.
Tennessee is one of seven states that doesn’t outlaw alcohol for passengers.
If it passes, the violation would be a misdemeanor. And passengers in taxis, limos, or campers would be exempt.
Lundberg says the law will save lives and bring more money into the state.

Community Businesses Help BrewHaus Bar Recover a
As the BrewHaus Bar continues to fix the damages caused by a fire on Thursday morning, their neighbors at the nearby Bitter Alibi are doing something some say is rather sweet.
Stephanie Lallement says her job at BrewHaus is her main source of income, so she needs the money she's earning tonight at the Bitter Alibi.
Bitter Alibi on Houston Street in downtown Chattanooga hired two bartenders from BrewHaus to work behind their counter tonight. Restaurant Co-Owner Matt Skudlarek says all tips will be split among BrewHaus staff.
Matt Skudlarek says, We thought wow if they have no work that weekend, we can what they would normally make. It kind of caught traction really quickly and it turned into a big event.
Mikenzy Smith says he frequents both the Bitter Alibi and the BrewHaus.
Smith says, I saw this on social media and there's no way I wouldn't come out and support two of my favorite local bartenders from two of my favorite bars in town.
Nearly three hundred people said they were attending the benefit on the event's Facebook page this evening.. and that's a lot for a restaurant with a capacity of 50 people.
Skudlarek says that's more people than they had at the bar's grand opening.
Another patron, Theresa Liedtka said, We just thought that was a great thing and decided to come out.
BrewHaus workers also got creative tonight- making jewelry and other crafts to raise money.
Lallement says, We didn't want to just ask people for donations, so we thought if we made some fun things like macaroni art and magnets out of bottle caps and things like that we'd feel a lot better about it ourselves.
And workers say that matters, even when they are trying to make ends meet.
BrewHaus cook, Patrick Smith, says For me that income will go towards rent basically but I'm sure it will help everyone out in different ways.
Lallement adds, It means so much to us. Rent is coming up, it's a really difficult time for this to have happened to us. We make almost all of our money off of tips.
Bitter Allibi isn't the only one chipping in to help. The Downtown Chattanooga Mellow Mushroom, The Chattanooga Brewing Company and the Root Kitchen Wine Bar are all running specials this weekend that will benefit the BrewHaus.

Big Change Coming to The Honest Pint
By SEAN PHIPPS
From Our Partners at Nooga.com
When The Honest Pint opened in 2010, owners thought that a smoke-filled atmosphere would fit with the Irish pub theme they were establishing. But times have changed.
Beginning July 1, The Honest Pint will transition to a nonsmoking venue.
Matt Lewis is a local businessman who owns part of The Honest Pint, Mean Mug, The Terminal Brewhouse, Hair of the Dog and Beast Barrel. He said the upcoming change has been years in the making, but the recent success of the Big Chill's transition to a nonsmoking establishment at their new Cherokee Boulevard location helped ease any fears he had.
It's one of those scenarios where you see people, talk to people, see trends and look at how we're going to grow our businessand at some point, the scale tipped toward nonsmoking, Lewis said. Honestly, we talked about it before we opened, but we used Hair of the Dog as a business model.
But unlike Hair of the Dogwhich maintains a large outdoor patioThe Honest Pint is a fully enclosed space.
The location, 35 Patten Parkway, has been a smoking establishment for at least 21 years, including at the previous Parkway Billiards. But a cultural shift downtown, according to Lewis, has suggested the time to make a change is now.
Unfortunately, these decisions are always about 'how do we do this and upset the fewest people?' he said. The biggest thing that I want to get across to people is that we're not changing our identity. In fact, we're making sure to refocus being as true to our Irish pub identity as possible. We're just changing one little detail about what happens when you're here.
Although the news may be troubling for some regulars, the change offers new customersof all agesthe opportunity to enjoy the space. Currently, Tennessee's Non-Smoker Protection Act bans smoking in all restaurants unless a venue restricts access to anyone under the age of 21 at all times. As a nonsmoking venue now, Lewis said families will be able to enjoy The Honest Pint.
It's very encouraging how much positive feedback we get on the food, so we really want to build on that business, he said. I hope someday it'll change, but Chattanooga is not an adult tourism town

Body found in Chattanooga seafood restaurant after fire
State investigators are remaining tight-lipped about human remains found after a restaurant fire in East Ridge.
The fire happened early Christmas morning at the former Hungry Fisherman and Tripp's Seafood restaurant.
Authorities won't say whether the body found was male, female, adult or child.
There's also been no word on whether the remains belong to someone killed in the fire or someone who died before the blaze began.
Officials are also still investigating how the fire started.
It was at least one of a handful on Christmas Day in the Chattanooga area.
In Tunnel Hill, a wheelchair-bound man died when he couldn't escape a fire in his home.

Big Chill and Grill in Chattanooga not allowed to serve beer...
The Big Chill and Grill is being punished for over-serving alcohol.
The Chattanooga Beer Board says the restaurant over-served two people in two days.
That now makes it three times in the last four months.
Now the North Shore bar won't be allowed to serve beer for six days, starting July 31st.
