Britain on Film: Rural Life takes audiences down the country lanes of the past, meandering through the dwindling customs of another era. Relive the work of the local blacksmith preparing shoes for the horses that will plough the fields, and the shepherd’s trials as he protects his flock from an encroaching storm. Be swept up in the homemade entertainment and giggles of children at the country fair and the joyful freedoms of the dance in the village hall.
Touching on all the technological, industrial and social changes that affected our countryside throughout the 20th century, these films evoke and encourage not only nostalgia, but also broader and more meaningful reflections on the nature of rural life and village communities in the UK today.
Our first programme from Britain on Film on Tour is an evocative exploration of the countryside of the UK, taking in the diverse and beautiful landscapes of all our home nations.

ELIO PACE & JONTY MARTINDALE - You May Be Right (Live at Brewery Arts Centre, Kendal-Sept 12, 2016)
Elio Pace and his band performing The Billy Joel Songbook at The Brewery Arts Centre on Monday, 12th September 2016.
This was the first of two encores. Elio invited his great friend and the show's promoter, Jonty Martindale to join him on stage. This was the last time that Elio & Jonty performed together. A legend of the north of England's music scene, Jonty Martindale passed away suddenly on April 10th 2017. This video is dedicated to his memory. Thank you to Marilyn Salisbury and Phil Jones for capturing the moment.
Elio's Facebook post written April 10, 2017:
We lost a beautiful beautiful man today in Jonty Martindale. I can't even begin to tell you what this man meant to me and how, in the ten or so short years that I knew him, he became someone I called a best friend. He created and ran a live music venue in Kendal, Cumbria called Bootleggers Bar, a legendary place in the north that we all wanted to play at. But he wasn't your normal manager/businessman; far from it. He was a brilliant musician himself, a music historian, massively intelligent, well read, cultured, passionate, hilarious and generous to a fault. He was one of those people that was loved and respected by customers, clients, musicians and locals. Everyone. He was the most dedicated husband and father and the greatest friend and support you could ever wish for as a gigging musician.
I could recount loads of stories to you describing Jonty's incredible character. He flew to New York to cheer me on when I played with Billy Joel's original band; he was the first person to buy tickets for my debut at Ronnie Scotts; we sang, laughed and cried sitting next to each other watching Billy Joel in concert in Manchester; he himself suggested 'the competition' in Kendal for me to do my 'Songbook' show last year because he felt that Bootleggers was too small for it and then proceeded to go and collect my posters from them so that he could distribute them around the town to make sure that it was a sell-out and thanks to him it was; my eyes fill up just thinking about that and how much he cared. He joined us on stage that night in September last year for the encore as I always traditionally would invite him up to do. It was always thrilling having him on stage with me.
There are so many stories I could tell but this one sums up completely what a special human being he was: I had met him and played at his club for the first time whilst I was touring with Albert Lee back in around 2007. I told him that I was planning to make an album of my own material and put a band together to tour myself. He told me that when I was ready he would love for me to bring my gig to his club. I was ready in January 2010 when I had made that album and put my 10-piece band together and put on my very first solo tour of the UK doing my own material. There were 10 dates in the book and Bootleggers was not going to be one of them because as much as we had tried we just couldn't make our diaries and the geography work.
Two weeks before the tour started, one of those 10 theatres let me down pretty badly by cancelling us because we had only sold 12 tickets or something. This cancellation would leave me stranded in the north of England with no gig before the next one a day later and as much as everybody in my team were extremely understanding and insisting it didn't matter, I wasn't happy because of the duty I had and commitment I'd made to my band and crew to pay and house them even though there would be no income coming in on that day.
In desperate hope I called Jonty telling him what had happened and what the date was. He told me that I would be playing at his club on that date by hook or by crook and that he would see me there. He called the band that had been booked to play at Bootleggers on that date and he re-scheduled them paying them a fee for the inconvenience. He then went ahead and created posters that he plastered all around Kendal. He personally called up everyone he knew, every musician, every business to make sure that the word spread that we were coming. The date came, he had booked a table at Pizza Express for the entire band and crew, 15 of us and bought us all lunch. In the short 2 weeks he had, he managed to sell around 100 tickets for the gig. He gave me every pound from those ticket sales without taking a penny of commission and kept the club and the bar open all night for us all... on the house. Over the years I tried to pay him back for that favour he did me and he never let me; he always found a sneaky little way to make sure that I couldn't.
Jonty... I love you mate. I'm so going to miss you and I promise you that we'll look after Di and your two gorgeous little girls. I'm so sorry that I didn't get around to doing your favourite Billy Joel song, 'Running On Ice' but I promise you I'll do it for you the next time I play at Bootleggers and I'll invite you to come and sing it with me. Thank you for everything you did, you gorgeous special man. Xxx
