First, sorry for the titling error, the video says episode 12, but it is actually episode 13, now that that is out of the way.....
This weeks offering comes from the Belgian brewery Liefmans Oudenaarde which was founded in 1679. While they brew a few Belgian beers, the two main ones are the Oud Bruin and the Lambic. Sadly, the brewery went bankrupt. It was bought by Duvel Moortgat Brewery so luckily this historic brewery and its Lambic is still available.
As for the Lambic it self? Well that's what the video is for. Sorry to say that I don't have the skill of a beer connoisseur, but hopefully I describe it well enough to make you want to try it out! Thanks for watching!

They were creating the wort (= unfinished beer) until 1991 in this roerkuip (dutch for kettle). Can you believe how much hand labour there was needed? For everyone it stays a miracle why every machine had a copy! ( image 0:15 copy of 0:30) Further, the wort has been pumped to the depth basin.

Liefmans Kriekenoogst 2017
Brouwerij Liefmans maakt vers bier met 60 ton sappige krieken.
Na de oogst worden de kraakverse krieken meteen naar de brouwerij getransporteerd. Daar staan ze klaar om de krieken over te laden in een ketel en te vermengen met jong en oud bier. Drie dagen na de pluk verdwijnen de rode lekkernijen samen met het bier in rijpingstanks, om er 15 maanden tot drie jaar te rijpen. Het resultaat van het fruitige bier proef je dus ten vroegste binnen anderhalf jaar…
Can Beer Be Made Without Hops?
Gruit or gruut is a word of Flemish or Dutch origin and refers to a collection of herbs and spices once used in the brewing process. In areas of the Low Countries controlled by the French, hops were banned and so brewers used a mixture known as gruut or gruit.
The Gruut City Brewery in Ghent was established in April 2009 by Annick De Splenter at Grote Huidevettershoek in Ghent, Belgium. Annick can truly be called a brewster, the ancient title for a woman brewer. She comes from proud heritage of brewers, for the De Splenter family is a brewing dynasty in Belgium. Her father Ivan ran Liefmans in Oudenaarde and Riva in Dentergem while her mother was related to the Van Eecke family that has a brewery in Watou.
Annick is a graduate of Ghent School of Brewing. Her research showed that in the Middle Ages, beer was brewed with herbs and spices instead of hops.
The exceptional properties of four Of Annick’s Ghent Gruut beers stem from the fact that they are brewed without hops. As you would expect, research into alternatives for replacing hops is no easy task. Annick is a graduate of Ghent School of Brewing. Her research showed that in the Middle Ages, beer was brewed with herbs and spices instead of hops. It was only after a course in biochemistry and various collaborative links with a range of universities that Annick’s Ghent City Beer saw the light of day. There are now 5 different varieties: Ghent Gruut White, Ghent Gruut Blonde, Ghent Gruut Amber, Ghent Gruut Brown and Ghent Gruut Inferno.
