Brick Bay Folly 2015 - Full Length Interview
The inaugural Brick Bay Folly Architectural Award Winner for 2015 is Belly of the Beast by Wellington based postgraduate architecture student duo Declan Burn and Matt Ritani.
The award, offered by Brick Bay Sculpture Trail, attracted a high calibre of entries from throughout New Zealand. The philosophy of the award was to create a modern day interpretation of the tradition of the folly from applicants who are current students or recent graduates of architecture, to seek out the next generation of architectural creativity in New Zealand. The winner was selected by a panel of esteemed professionals including Richard Didsbury, Associate Professor Tony van Raat, Richard Harris, Justine Harvey, Karen Warman and Jonathan Organ.
Belly of the Beast gestures towards numerous references while resisting a single meaning, this tension was something that Declan Burn and Matt Ritani wished to explore. The pair have looked to sculpture for possible points of collision between sculptural and architectural practices.
Belly of the Beast’s influences include Kahu tōī (Maori flax cloaks), a furry pelt, the existing Brick Bay tower and Eva Hesse’s Accession series. The folly is an ambiguous form, the exterior being completely black. In contrast, the interior is a rich blood red indicating the bodily nature of the architecture whilst also referring to the Marae tradition of building as body.
Working within the philosophies of sustainability, it was important for Matt and Declan to situate the construction of the folly within a process of future assemblies, meaning the folly is in a temporary material state and will ultimately transform into other plausible uses. This consideration fundamentally alters the detailing of such a folly, as the proportions of systems must optimise reusable material.
Belly of the Beast is on view from March 2015 - March 2016 at Brick Bay Sculpture Trail, Arabella Lane, Snells Beach, New Zealand.
The Brick Bay Folly Award 2015 is proudly supported by Brick Bay, AGM Publishing, New Zealand Institute of Architects Incorporated, Resene and Unitec.
