Metamora Mill, Metamora Indiana, Franklin County
1897 Metamora Mill continues to grind cornmeal. They have functioning millstones, antique milling equipment and an 1868 Leffel Turbine that used to power the Mill. Today a wooden water wheel is powered by the water of Whitewater River that is fed into the Whitewater Canal. All aspects of a mill associated with a canal can be found here at Metamora Mill, Indiana. Music by Pitx, Hidden Blues. Metamora Mill was established in 1847 by Jonathan Banes. Initially, the mill was used to process cotton into thread. The site was transformed into a flour mill in 1856. The original mill building was devastated by fire in 1883. The brick exterior of Metamora Mill was completed in 1897. The new mill was designed with the same footprint as created by Jonathan Banes in 1847.
The Whitewater Canal was built from 1836 through 1865 and completed 76 miles. Jonathan Banes established Metamora Mill on the Whitewater Canal (in 1847). There were three other mills in the town of Metamora during the Canal Era. The Whitewater Canal supplied Banes with water to power his waterwheel. The Canal also allowed Banes the opportunity to transport his processed cotton into Lawrenceburg, Indiana and the Ohio River to sell to distant markets. The Canal was completed in 1843 to Cincinnati, Ohio. The canal system throughout the then young United States, was doomed because of several important developments. Initially the flooding consistently broke down the canal embankments requiring tremendous repairs. Consequently, finances were not available to support the continued damage found after each flood. The eventual collapse of the canal system was the railroad. Interestingly enough, the railroad bought the land from the tow paths that followed canals. Here at Metamora Mill you will discover the railroad paralleling the historic canal.
Metamora Mill changed the flour mill from using a wooden water wheel for its power to a Leffel Turbine in 1868. The turbine has a 70 diameter and was installed in place of the water wheel. The original antique Leffel Turbine remains outside of the mill as an historical landmark. It would be advantageous to everyone if the turbine could be placed inside a dry building so the cast iron could be preserved for future generations.
In 1945 the Whitewater Canal Indiana State Historic Site created funding for the preservation of Metamora's historical Whitewater Canal, the Locks on the canal, the Metamora Mill, and the covered bridge aqueduct. Indiana updated the canal and locks, set up the mill to grind corn in season, supports the canal boat and horses for visitors and a steam engine for local trips. They use the Mill Store to set up all of the dates and times for such events. (765.647.6512) or indianamuseum.org
Today you will find Whitewater Canal Lock #25 adjacent to Metamora Mill. The State wanted to have water power to run the drive shafts, belts & pulleys in the basement (lowest level) of the mill so they could grind corn with mill stones as authentically as possible. In doing so, they set up a 12' breastshot waterwheel inside Lock #25.

Indian Mill
The original Wyandot Indian Mill was constructed about 300' upstream from the present Indian Mill structure.
The original mill was built in 1821. This mill was built for the Wyandot Indians by the United States Government. It was a reward for the loyalty the Wyandots gave the U.S. Government during the War of 1812. In conjunction with the gristmill, the government also built a sawmill. The gristmill operated with an undershot waterwheel and functioned actively around harvest time. The sawmill had an overshot waterwheel and functioned all year.
The present mill building was built in 1861 by Lewis Rummel. The same man who built Rummel Mill in Richland County. The construction of this mill is unique in that the framework of the building is similar to that of a covered bridge. The interior of the mill exhibits huge oak timbers that were cut with an up-and-down saw. The present mill building has a few of the old walnut timbers from the original Indian Mill that was dismantled when the new mill was built. By 1885, records indicate that the sawmill was also gone.
In 1862 three Leffel Turbines were installed. The Sandusky River provided ample waterpower to turn the turbines that ground flour and cornmeal until around 1885. During the last 50 years of Indian Mill's operation, it functioned primarily as a gristmill grinding cornmeal. The water level in the Sandusky River dropped significantly during the latter part of the 1800's, which prevented the mill from processing flour. This location just did not have a dependable water supply.
Indian Mill had many owners prior to 1885, when John Finkle purchased the mill and two acres for $2,000. The Finkle Family operated the mill until 1943 when it was purchased by Ward Walton. It then became the property of the State of Ohio. On July 14, 1968, Indian Mill was dedicated as the first mill museum in the United States by the Ohio Historical Society.
The Indian Mill Museum is open to the public June through October, Thursday 1-5, Friday and Saturday 9:30-5, and Sunday 1-6. There is a nominal admission charged for the tour.

Subways Are for Sleeping / Only Johnny Knows / Colloquy 2: A Dissertation on Love
Subways Are for Sleeping is a musical with a book and lyrics by Betty Comden and Adolph Green and music by Jule Styne. The original Broadway production played in 1961-62.
The musical was inspired by an article about subway homelessness in the March 1956 issue of Harper's and a subsequent 1957 book based on it, both by Edmund G. Love, who slept on subway trains throughout the 1950s and encountered many unique individuals. With the profits from his book, Love then embarked on a bizarre hobby: over the course of several years, he ate dinner at every restaurant listed in the Manhattan yellow pages directory, visiting them in alphabetical order.
After two previews, the Broadway production, directed and choreographed by Michael Kidd, opened on December 27, 1961 at the St. James Theatre, where it ran for 205 performances. The cast included Orson Bean, Sydney Chaplin, Carol Lawrence, Gordon Connell, Grayson Hall, and Green's wife Phyllis Newman (whose costume, consisting solely of a towel, was probably Freddy Wittop's easiest design in his distinguished career), with newcomers Michael Bennett and Valerie Harper in the chorus.
Subways Are for Sleeping opened to mostly negative reviews. The show already was hampered by a lack of publicity, since the New York City Transit Authority refused to post advertisements on the city's buses and in subway trains and stations for fear they would be perceived as officially sanctioning the right of vagrants to use these facilities as overnight accommodations. Producer David Merrick and press agent Harvey Sabinson decided to invite individuals with the same names as prominent theatre critics (such as Walter Kerr, Richard Watts, Jr. and Howard Taubman) to see the show and afterwards used their favorable comments in print ads. Thanks to photographs of the seven critics accompanying their blurbs (the well-known real Richard Watts was not African American), the ad was discovered to be a deception by a copy editor. It was pulled from most newspapers, but not before running in an early edition of the New York Herald Tribune. However, the clever publicity stunt allowed the musical to continue to run and it eventually turned a small profit.
Newman won the Tony Award for Best Featured Actress in a Musical, and nominations went to Bean for Best Featured Actor and Kidd's choreography.

Around the World in Eighty Days by Jules Verne | Audio book with subtitles
Around the World in Eighty Days (version 2) Read by Mark F. Smith.
Jules VERNE , translated by UNKNOWN ( - )
Mysterious Phileas Fogg is a cool customer. A man of the most repetitious and punctual habit - with no apparent sense of adventure whatsoever - he gambles his considerable fortune that he can complete a journey around the world in just 80 days... immediately after a newspaper calculates the feat as just barely possible.
With his excitable French manservant in tow, Fogg undertakes the exercise immediately, with no preparations, trusting that his traveling funds will make up for delays along the way. But unbeknownst to him, British police are desperately seeking to arrest him for the theft of a huge sum by someone who resembles him, and they will track him around the world, if necessary, to apprehend him.
This is an adventure novel of the first water, with wholly unexpected perils, hair-breadth escapes, brilliant solutions to insoluble problems, and even a love story. And can this be? - That he returns to London just five minutes too late to win his wager and retain his fortune? (Summary by Mark F. Smith)

The Hovind Theory blends scientific observations with Scripture in a fascinating explanation of what caused Noah's Flood, the ice age, the formation of coal, mountain ranges, and the Grand Canyon. Dr. Hovind gives logical answers to the physical anomalies that geologists cannot explain with the evolutionary theory. This seminar aims to answer the following questions:
What caused Noah's flood? How could the world be completely covered with water? Where does the ice age fit into the Bible

The Cruise of the Snark Audiobook by Jack London | Full Audiobook with subtitles
The Cruise of the Snark (1913) is a memoir of Jack and Charmian London's 1907-1909 voyage across the Pacific. His descriptions of surf-riding, which he dubbed a royal sport, helped introduce it to and popularize it with the mainland. London writes: Through the white crest of a breaker suddenly appears a dark figure, erect, a man-fish or a sea-god, on the very forward face of the crest where the top falls over and down, driving in toward shore, buried to his loins in smoking spray, caught up by the sea and flung landward, bodily, a quarter of a mile. It is a Kanaka on a surf-board. And I know that when I have finished these lines I shall be out in that riot of colour and pounding surf, trying to bit those breakers even as he, and failing as he never failed, but living life as the best of us may live it. This is an original reading of Jules Verne's Around The World In Eighty Days.
