Iceland: crossing continental divides via the Bridge Between Continents
Crossing from Europe to North America on foot (yes, really) via the Bridge Between Continents close to Reykjavik on the Reykjanes Peninsula, Iceland

The volatile geothermal field Austurengjar, about 2km south of Kleifarvatn, is often called Krýsuvík after the nearby abandoned farm.
Nearby is the lake Grænavatn, an old explosion crater filled with weirdly green water – caused by a combination of minerals and warmth-loving algae.
Bridge between Europe and North America on Reykjanes Peninsula.
The lava-scarred Reykjanes peninsula lies on one of the world's major plate boundaries, the Mid Atlantic Ridge. According to the continental drift theory the Eurasian and North American tectonic plates are continuously drifting apart with great forces under the gaping rifts. As the plates diverge, linear fractures, known as fissures form due to stresses created by the tension that builds up as the plates move away from each other.
The Bridge between two continents at Sandvík is a small footbridge over a major fissure which provides clear evidence of the presence of a diverging plate margin. The bridge was built as a symbol for the connection between Europe and North America.

the idea is fun and it’s perked up by “Welcome to America” and “Welcome to Europe” signs that greet you as you cross. The bridge is decked in steel mesh, so you can look down into the ravine below along the way, though this isn’t especially deep or at all dangerous – you can easily walk through it from either end and pass under the bridge.
I was in full awe standing on the “Bridge between the Continents”. I mean, was it actually ‘real’!!Am I really standing in between the two continents!! The earth under me is actually slipping apart slowly, leaving a thin layer that is sinking gradually into the sea and geographically belongs to no continent.’A No Man’s Land’ for real.
An interesting stop to experience the tectonic plates. The area around bridge is like another planet. It was a short 30 foot or so bridge, about 10 mtrs. above the ridge lines of rocks. Deep black sand runs under the bridge makes for some fun photo ops.
Bridge Between Continents - VIDEO TOUR (Reykjanesbær, Iceland)
A really cool place to visit when exploring Iceland! It's not far from Keflavík International Airport at all, so a good place to visit if around KEF! There isn't exactly much to see, but it's more for the experience and feeling of what it is!

Address: Skógarbraut 945, 235 Reykjanesbær, Iceland

It probably seems impossible to walk from Europe to North America within a matter of seconds, but Iceland is a unique place where seemingly unimaginable feats are completely real. The Bridge between Continents or Midlina is a 15 meter (50 ft) footbridge in the Reykjanes Peninsula spanning a gaping rift between the Eurasian and North American tectonic plates.
The lava-scarred Reykjanes Peninsula lies directly on the Mid Atlantic Ridge. These major tectonic plates drift apart by the Earth’s forces, few centimeters each year. After crossing the bridge you can pick up a personalized certificate from the Reykjanes Information Center. It verifies that you did indeed walk all the way from Europe to America. Or at least between the two tectonic plates…
Beneath the bridge is crevasse, that is mostly filled with sand. You can also walk beneath the bridge, though we recommend that if you have problem walking that you stay on the path. The view from the bridge is splendid. You can see the sea not far away and on a clear day you can see Eldey island, which is just south of Reykjanes peninsula. South of that is Geirfuglasker island, where the last Great Auk was killed, leaving the specie extinct. Eldey island is home to thousands of sea birds.
All around the Bridge is the Reykjanes lava field. This is in fact layer upon layers of lava fields, the youngest one being from 1240. There are many small craters, called Stampar, nearby and if you have the time and you are interested in geology, it can be interesting to hike. If you drive south from the Bridge you will find a small parking lot after a few minutes to the right side of the road. From there you can hike and find a few small creaters.
Also, not far from the the Bridge is a small cove called Sandvik. It has a nice black sand beach and not many people go there, making it a nice photo stop. However, beware of the waves, they can get quite big.

Bridge between continents : Iceland (Europe/North American plates)
At the continental rift in southwest Iceland between the European and North American plates which are moving apart. This is located south of Keflavik. The rift widens by a few inches per year and there is a bridge between the plates you can walk on. You can also go down into the rift but not sure what would happen during any seismic activity there.

Bridge Between Two Continents
Close to Iceland's Keflavík International Airport lies a special bridge. It connects two continents, America to the west and Europe to the east, as it lies across the point where two tectonic plates are diverging. A few minutes southwards from the bridge lies Gunnuhver, a hot spring area named after a ghost. Photos: Kari-Mette Johansen and Randi Jansdatter Boldevin.
